Pretty meaningless data point without knowing what you are doing with it to cause the overheating. Every Macbook Pro I have owned in 10 years gets hot on my lap. "Professional" tasks covers an infinite range of use cases, maybe you bought the wrong tool for the job.

I fear you are right.

And fair - professional task in my case: Recording a voiceover on an 8 minute video in Final Cut Pro using a USB mic.

Buying the latter can be silly or not depending on the thinking of each person.
Very few people need the latest. However, if you have an uncontrollable desire and can afford it.
There are people who still work without problems with an MBP 2012, I do not have impetuous hardware needs but I suppose an MBP of 2016, 2017 would be ok.

I had the original MBP 14 years ago (check my post history). Not even that model beach balled and broke load (well not that much). I doubt that Apple's engineers forgot or neglected thermal management in 14 years time. This report is an anomaly at best and suspicious at best also, actually. I would love a video or report to back it up. I'm sure it's possible but we need more data to understand it.

The 13" 2019 base model is my daily driver and I love it. No issues with keyboard, unlike my 2018 Air which failed 3 times in a row! Small and compact but has a quad core CPU so can do basic media work when I need to (FCP X, etc). It's also reasonably priced (unlike the $1699 13") and I only need a 128GB internal drive (all my files are online) so it's very economical and nice.

Considering moving to the 16" though OR if they make a 14" with dGPU I'm there

Interesting. I haven’t noticed that at all. I have the 1.4GHz with 16GB/512GB and it works very well for me.

i second this I. 1.4, 16gb, 512 Here. Never have issues with overheating or slowdowns. Id recommend people take those comments with a grain of salt about running hot. So many reviews and YouTube tests prove theyre fine if they’re working properly.

They do run warm. Not overheating hot but warm enough to make your lap feel uncomfortably warm if doing anything really intensive. That's why I recommend that app--you can override the system control of the fan and even use it to cool your lap like that old HP CoolSense feature if you like. Or disable it completely (it warns you it might kill your laptop) or change the RPM setting when it turns on, or change the threshold when it turns on. Also gives a really nice layout of every possible temperature your laptop has. Including ports, battery, GPU and RAM temps.

I wouldn't buy ANY MacBook Pro with a butterfly keyboard.
Not new.
Not used.
I don't care how cheap the offering price.

These are destined to become one of the worst products Apple has ever produced, due to the disastrous keyboard. I wonder if this is one of the primary reasons Jony Ive left Apple...?

After today’s news, I wouldn’t buy one.

Apple no doubt began the 16 inch MPB project with scaling it down in size to replace the current 13 inch, as a key objective.

With the success of the 16 million much, no doubt Apple is doing all it can to get this new version launched.

I suspect it was lots of reasons Ive left.

I read that he was burnt out after the launch of the Watch, however finishing the new Apple campus and being allowed complete control of the design - plus no doubt tonnes of money - kept him there.

But that lead to Ive being allowed to be too self indulgent.

It was obviously Ive who wanted to launch a ‘luxury’ Apple Watch at $10k and to work in gold.

And yes, being allowed to take the MacBook and Machook Pro down to their ‘essence’ with compromised functionality.

Ive was obviously deeply involved in the IPhone X, which was a great (if expensive) product, so we can be thankful to him for that.

However, it felt right that he left, as he’s taken these devices as far as they could go with his aesthetic and their current form factors.

Personally, I'd wait. Only you know if you can though, and for how long. I think the new 13" MBP is imminent.

As for resale value. When I bought my 16" and then sold my 2018 15.4" I got $1400 for it (16mb/512). I thought I should have gotten $1500~$1600 as that was what people were getting just prior. For my experience then it looks like you would take a pretty swift 15%-20% extra loss after the new machine comes out. But you'd have a fairly new machine and I think the used price of that machine wouldn't dip as much as my somewhat older machine did. It's kind of like a car, no matter what's on the market you lose value every few months regardless. That's life in a consumer-oriented market that is still rapidly progressing its products.

MacBooks are not limited on the TDP, most PC Subnotebooks are (mostly 75°c). Dunno why they do this, even if Intel allows much more (So most Ads on these Subnotes are just wrong, because the Boost cannot reach what the Ads say). My Lenovo X1 and Thinkbook only reaching 16W from 24W (Intel Power Gadget) referenced and tested by Intel. The MacBook Pro 13" 2019 (4TB, 2,4 GHZ) seems not limited at all, and uses the reference Intel gave out.

Thats why MacBook are "hotter" then PC-Subnotebooks.

Here's what I'm seeing with my X1 E. Shows that I'm able to hit the 55 watts in turbo, but the temps spiked at 100c and throttling occured. Running it multiple times only highlighted the throttling a bit more. I'm fairly happy with the performance of my X1 E, and its running a lot faster then what you were seeing for some reason - it could have been a bios setting, or a power setting in the Lenovo vantage app or the power slider.

As others have mentioned, there is no guarantee Apple will release an updated 13" soon, even if it makes sense. More than likely, we'll sell the entire line switched over to the new scissor keyboard at some point this year, but if that means March, June, or fall is anyone's guess. Apple may be waiting for the availability of Ice Lake 10nm chips in a steady supply, as well it could be that due to the current Virus outbreak Apple is holding off a few months.

If you NEED one now, then buy one, but I would probably wait until at least March to see if Apple drops anything.
