At the store that I went to for the 5S (Rockingham Park Mall in Salem, NH), only the first five folks in line got phones on launch day, unless they were on Sprint. Everyone that got in line fewer than 15 or so hours ahead of time didn't get a phone. I have no idea why that happened, but they literally came out when the stores opened, ushered in a the first five folks after asking them what phones they wanted, and told everyone else they could go home (while stating Sprint phones were still in stock). I got in line at 3am. And went home shortly after 8 with nothing...

So... that's why.

And that's the reason why I could never do the "line up outside an Apple store" thing. I can't imagine waiting in line for hours for a phone and when it's finally my turn, the store reps are like "sorry bro, you're SOL...all the phones are sold out. We got a few 5C's left tho...just let me clean the dust off of them" and also it's the fact that if you wait in line...you may get a phone, but it may not be the color and/or size that you want. And I don't want to just settle b/c that's all they had left, as opposed to getting the phone that I actually wanted.

Completely fair. First time it happened to me. If this is always the worst part of my year I will consider myself a very lucky man. :p

 Wait, you managed to pick one up on release day by leaving your house at 6am on that day and walked out with one by 9am. I was under the impression you had to start queuing at least the day before to get one, esp. from the Regent St store.

Yep, although these days (ansdI suspect especially for the 'new'/non incremental models), I don't think I'd be able to do the same again.

You see on your local news that people are camping out for a new iPhone device a week before release. You

1) roll your eyes
2) get jealous that you don't have the time to do it yourself
3) lose all respect for them
3) other

You salting your jimmies brah?

Praise Jesus! Now join an iPhone camp line and spread the word brother.

Calling it a phone is like calling a Mercedes a chair.

I have a life. Hugely successful career, great family, engage in regular, challenging outdoor endurance events, donate to charities, play drums.

Of course I'll get one either way. Of course you don't get points for getting it first. It's fun for us to get it when it comes out and it's fun to hang out with other folks that are likewise excited to be part of that same event.

It says more about people that are so dissatisfied with their own lives that they have to try to denigrate others for the things they find enjoyable.

I have a great life. Yours might be better if you stopped caring what I do with mine.

i don't give a damn what you do, ever. really. you're someone online on a forum that's talking about a product that's not even official yet

I personally don't have the time or the interest in camping out for a new iPhone, but I can certainly see the appeal. I've camped out for plenty of other activities (sporting events, movie premieres, etc), and the sense of community you gain from people all gathering with a common interest is a lot of fun. I however, would rather just pre-order and have the phone shipped to my front door on release day.

Except I was referencing a quote that suggested people that camp out don't have a life. Someone can claim they don't give a damn, ever, what people do, but when they also tell people who camp to get a life, it's clear they do care (at least on some level).

So, I'm providing myself as a strong counter-example to the assumption that campers don't have lives, or don't have jobs.

This is the perfect non-camper response. He/she doesn't have the time or the interest, but also understands that it's similar to other kinds of events and that there's a fun sense of community amongst those that do.

Kudos to you, sir (pardon the assumption of gender, but I find it unlikely a female would use the name 'dirtysocks' ;))
