Some reasonably lucid comments on the Slashdot story on Google's downtime state that the redirect issues were simply due to "browser guessing", or something like that. By default browsers will attempt to figure out what you meant to type when you make a typo and the domain doesn't exist (or something like that). These opportunistic companies like Sogo search just take advantage of this by registering a domain name that your browser will guess if you can't get to Google for some reason.

I may have mucked that explanation up - DNS isn't my strong point. :D In any case, you can turn off these "browser guesses" in Firefox/Mozilla (explained in some of the Slashdot comments).
