I use Bing on desktop as it's excellent.

The mobile optimised site needs a bit of work, but anything I can do to support Job's thermonuclear war against Google I am doing.

MS are being very innovative and I admire their efforts lately, and think a friendly partnership with competition obviously would be ideal.

Would love to see Apple single-handedly push Bing miles up the search ranks! Just gotta let Microsoft work its magic on the UI and tweak it for the retina displays etc and BAM!

Google's lost a lot of things helping it out ;)

Reading these comments, and wondering the same myself, made me think of a few quotes from Steve:

"We didn't get into the search business. Google got into the phone business." —D8 Conference, 2010

"They are scared to death, because they know they are guilty. Outside of search, Google’s products — Android, Google Docs — are s***." —Interview with Walter Isaacson, 2010

I think Apple recognizes Google's "core product" — search — is the best in the business and something Google has developed and innovated upon on their own. I think Apple is sending the message, "stick to what you're good at" and "we have no beef with you on this".

I would have thought, if Apple intended to change the default search provider, we would have seen it in Mountain Lion.

BTW, there's a pretty good article weighing Apple's options here: http://searchengineland.com/apple-google-themonuclear-124620

Google search isn't going anywhere until there is something better to replace it.

For the moment, Apple's way of undermining Google Search is via Siri.

I wish apple would kick some of thier own apps out of the OS make them live or die on the AppStore as well.

^^^^^ THIS

I don't need stocks, newstand, or weather apps. I have better apps. The phone needs to be more bare on default apps and let people install them/remove them as needed.

The criteria should be:
What is the bare minimum for it to function as a cellphone (contacts, messages, phone). Then add the app store.

^ I like the idea of being able to uninstall everything - EVERYTHING! Bwahhahahaha.

Perhaps they could allow people to choose their own search engine..

Edit: Derp, i forgot it was an option - forgive me, I don't use iOS that often (it's nice though!)

Settings > safari > search engine

You already have a choice. Apple won't remove google as a search engine they would be leaving the door wide open to being sued in every court around the world!

I could easily see them removing it as the default search option (perhaps switch to Bing or otherwise), but I agree that removal is highly unlikely.

I laughed at the people saying Apple to buy Yahoo. Yahoo is powered by Bing. Would be sort of counter productive.

This ^^

And even if they removed Google search as a default. They can't/won't block the Google.com web page in Safari for those who prefer a Google search.

But we could lose the ability to type into the top right textbar in Safari and have it do a google search. And that's the only way I search the internet on my phone.

Apple is cutting off its nose to spite its face. The fact is Google offers a lot of really nice services... and when Apple was playing nice with them, they delivered the slickest interface to get those outstanding products on a mobile device. But now that Apple is phasing out Google's products, there are some pretty serious holes being created.

It's likely going to cost them further marketshare. What I can't quite seem to figure out is why everyone around here seems more concerned with Apple "beating" Google than with their user experience. I really don't care what companies have to do behind closed doors... I just want the best user experience I can have. IMO, Apple has certainly lost its stranglehold there. Their lead isn't completely evaporated, but continuing to shun Google could be a real problem from a user experience standpoint.
