Hi guys....I am new to Homekit-- and so far have a Lutron Caseta bridge for lights, an Ecobee3 Thermostat, a Schlage Sense front door lock... and an Apple TV to tie it all together.

I'm building the house one piece at a time. I really want to be able to control the water heater remotely, so that when we return from out of town I can turn it on in advance before arriving... I have not found any other load controller on the market yet than the Insteon load controller for about $100... but is it compatible with HomeKit? If I buy it, do I have to buy the Insteon hub too? I've already got two devices sitting next to my Internet Modem/Router...do I now have to have three? Does this configuration have a history of being reliable?

It does not appear that it is compatible with the Insteon HomeKit Hub 2243-222, which is the one that is HomeKit compatible. See this list for HomeKit compable devices for Insteon HomeKit Hub.

You will likely need a different Insteon Hub like the 2245-222 or an ISY-994i and use Homebridge to add them to HomeKit, if you are dead set on HomeKit compatiblity. I'm currently testing Alexa using the Roger app using my ISY-994i and about to setup Homebridge on my iMac to test HomeKit, since I currently don't have any HomeKit devices. My Ecobee3 is the old one that isn't HomeKit compatible.
