It is definitely faster, but I have noticed it has worse battery life. It may be because I am using it a little more than normal, but it does seem to just be a little worse.

Like 10-20% ?

So is the 4S battery life decrease down to more than just the A5 then it seems

To those who have upgraded - did you do a clean install or just the standard upgrade? I'm debating doing the former, but really don't want to mess with re-setting up everything. But might consider it, if it really speeds things up........

The process for me was

1: Backup iPhone
1a: "Transfer Purchases" to backup all the apps
2: Place iPhone in DFU
3: "Restore" the iPhone using iOS 5 GM
4: Restore the iPhone from my Backup

Result: None of my apps were installed (I hadn't sync'ed apps with iTunes, not sure if apps will be auto-installed for those who Sync) - but it only took a few minutes to re-install them back with iTunes. My save games still all appear to be here, and I didn't have to set the phone back up at all.

Haven't really noticed any speed increase or decrease over IOS4 after updating to the IOS5GM, but one thing that I definitely have noticed is the increased battery life.

Usage: 7 hours 20 minutes
Standby: 1 day 19 hours
Battery % left : 39%

Previously, i would be on less than 30% after 24 hours.

YMMV.

Definitely have noticed better battery life in iOS 5 with my iPhone 4 too.

I notice serious performance issues in safari (stuttering when scrolling pages, zooming in and out, especially when the page is still loading). Another issues is lag when inputting text on web pages (as in posting in forums, for example).

Strange that everything else seems normal., however the above problems are shows toppers for me.

I will try set up as a new phone rather than restore - do you think this will make a difference? Failing that, is there any way to go back to iOS 4?

I've experienced these problems with a fresh install. Keyboard lag when inputting text and also touching a link on a page often opens a blank page and does not load a link. It seems to be full sites and not mobile sites this happens on, well for me anyway.

House Keeping is important to keep your iOS perform

Your iPhone is the same as your computer. With all the install/uninstall, there are a lot of useless files left inside the phone. Plus, most of the apps enabled notification even they are not using it. Many reasons on your iPhone to slow down the device.

Completely reinstall is the best option but it will take me hours to do so so I tried to avoid it. I end up spent an hour to delete useless apps (I have hundreds of apps on my iPhone 4), deleted very old SMS text messages, disable useless notifications within the Notification Center, and removing all the photos that I have been achieved.

I have documented the details here.

Wirelessly posted

My experience with anything Apple is always the same: devices run best with the operating system originally installed on them. Just like Lion does not run as well as Snow Leopard on my iMac, iOS5 isn't as smooth as iOS4.

It's not that it's bad, it's just not as good. There are slight hesitations in unexpected places, and general responsiveness is diminished. Battery life is pretty severely reduced, and crashes do occasionally happen when they never happened before. I can't downgrade, so I've learned to live with it.

I have not set the phone up as new because I lose so much data by doing so, and because it takes multiple hours that I currently don't have. If this fixed it I would be content.

The built-in slowdowns that encourage upgrading to newer hardware is one of my least favorite things about Apple. I understand this is not everyone's experience, but it is definitely mine. I would take fragmentation of OSs over lag any day.
