Apple 'improves' the things that IMO matter least - iMessage emoticon packs, and garbage like that - and refuses to do anything that would make the phone more productive and easier to use for the masses.

Like what you ask?

Very simple stuff that isn't hard to do like more icons per row, easier to view/change audible settings, etc. Things that I CAN do with my jail-broke 6s since iOS 9.

Let's hope something useful in that department is unveiled with ios11. But I don't think so...

Out of curiosity, you think an imessage emoticon pack, took all of the development effort away from core functionality updates, security updates, plus other numerous things that have been introduced in IOS 10 since last September? And you think none of this matters to the masses, even trying to understand what the masses really want.

Did you see the keynote or read that ios 11 has quite a few updates? Maybe not the stuff you are looking for, but I think some of what was said/announced is very useful to me. And I do like the emojis.

I think what he's saying is that given a choice between Apple working on emojis and iMessage stickers OR the ability to place icons on your homescreen anywhere you want to, he'd prefer the latter.

Everyone is different, but jailbreaking is still popular because there are just some things Apple hasn't chosen to allow yet.

I saw part of the Apples presentation today.

Giving us emojis isn't a hard thing to do yet Apple touts it as a big deal in ios10 for iMessage. I actually consider ios10 to be one of Apple's weaker iOS releases.

In contrast, ios11 actually looks to be a pretty strong release with some long awaited improvements.

The fact that split-windows (introduced in ios9) and left untouched w/ios10...I consider that to be an egregious offense. Finally, with ios11 and practically after a 2 year wait will we get some improvements here...much too long.

But I personally like the emojis and use them very frequently. Your post made it sound like an choice between emojis and/or other stuff, which isn't correct , imo, given the size of Apple. That is what I was really commenting on. Not the timeline.

Emoji packs...it's relatively easy to do from a feature perspective to implement. Yet Apple makes it sound like a hundred-fold improvement that they did...it's not (though I understand to a degree) why many people like it.

It's a crowd-pleasing gesture more than anything. I'm not impressed.

The crowd pleasing gesture may be what the masses really wanted then. St snybrate, Apple always has its own timeline, but they do seem to produce a product their customers like.

That is the challenge and one that Apple appears not to be meeting. Or meeting haphazardly.
Emoticon packs - simple crowd IM pleaser
Use features like Files/Split Windows - harder but very haphazardly released
Icon placement / theming - easy to do but something Apple seems to avoid like the plague
Redesign like App Store - What is the driver? It isn't specifically what the customer is looking for.

Many times I wonder who Apple's target audience really is. Who is really driving this train.

It's more like who believes they are in charge of designing the train to be driven. but certain things are more important than others and Apple would have to have a priority list of these items.

I can categorically say the driver there is more developer engagement and revenue from AppStore adverts.

I agree - I wonder far too often who derives that "list". That "deriver" looks to be an ever moving or morphing topic.

Why do you say that? Curious.
It looks like in-app is the biggest money-maker. To find apps that fit my current need / curiosity I use Google to search (search in the App Store is horrid and looks to be getting worse in 11).

You may search on google but loads of people just search on the AppStore and the adverts show up when they do makes them a substantial amount. The in app purchases are only good for some games. Most apps don't make a lot of money.

App Store should have a full web interface like Gogle Play. Use a large screen, full browser to find the app you want, and hit a button to send to your device.

Common topic that arises at least 1x year.
Complicated? No. Disorganized? Yes

To many options in places that make little sense. Too many "hidden" or not easily found functions.

JMHO YMMV ;)
As a senior citizen and owner of an iPad and iMac I totally agree. The latest update to os12 is more of the same and I have emailed Apple to tell them so. My guess is that they are giving the App Inventors free rein at the expense of operating system efficiency and ease of use.

This is one of the problems I have with Apple.
-
Don't get me wrong, I know people use them and like that. And that's fine. To each his own. I'm just stating my opinion.

So, just be be clear, your ‘problem’ with Apple is that they add features that other people use but you don’t?

That's correct.

I'm not into stickers, dancing poop emoji and making yourself look like a unicorn.

I'm more into being allowed to do things like put my icons on the screen wherever I like, start a text from the lockscreen, make a call from the lockscreen, contact images everywhere there is a contact, minor tweaks to the system such as detailed battery usage, detailed info on BT connections, being able to move photos to and from an album (not just add to), create my own actions (buttons, touch, swipe, etc), etc, etc.

But Apple knows it's customers better than I do. And apparently they don't want things like that.

Yes, it's getting complicated. Apple thinks they are helping users I suppose.
I'm willing to bet most people uses the basic apps (iMessage, Mail, Maps, Camera, Facebook).
I think us "power" users or more "advanced" users do a little more that require the chips that Apple uses.

More options will always make the UX complicated given there’ll always be a restriction of size and the UI layer workflow.

Yes. I used iPhone up to the iPhone 5, then moved to Android via Windows Phone. I've had several Andoid Phones and currently have a Samung Galaxy S9. I took delivery of an iPhone Xs on launch day last Friday. I was shocked at how complicated iOS has become. To me it looks like the base OS hasn't changed much but Apple has bolted on all sorts of things like the widget pane rather than re-doing the whole OS. The preferences app is appalling. In Android you get a nice categorised list and app settings are set within each app, like on Windows, Mac and Linux. In iOS most app settings are set withing the huge settings app. I have no idea how less technical users manage to be honest.

The whole thing was such a mess I couldn't live with it and have returned it for a refund. It certainly makes me appreciate Android!
