As is usually the case, the opinions expressed on Macrumors do not equate to the experience of the vast majority of Apples customers.

As an example, I estimate that less than 1% of iPad owners visit this site, ever.
Also people usually only post when they have an issue, not when everythings perfect.

Macrumors is a microcosm and, out in the wider, less Apple obsessed, world the VAST majority of Apples customers, iPad or otherwise, are perfectly happy.

This^

Had i not visited the forums so often i wouldnt have picked my new toy apart!

I think its a great product, and yes only Apple could design it so well but its my opinion the manafacturing is below standard.

I know its usually only the defects that get reported however it would seem the new iPad is a bit of a lemon. Poorly manafactured using the lowest cost lowest quality components.

I'm left feeling quite unsatisfied with the Apple experience this time around, on my 2nd pad still with defects but tolerating as realize this is now the level of quality Apple is at.

My MacBook Air on the other hand very satisfied, very high quality product and defect free, and as I recall this goes for the majority of them when released. As was my iPad 1 for that matter, in fact any Apple product i've owned has been a pleasure.

Anyone else thinking the same? Left disatisfied but tolerant?

Mine, a 64gb Wifi model, is fine, very minimal light bleeding it looks fantastic.

Could you please list those defects that you are experiencing?

I haven't got my iPad yet; however, I've seen these:

- Backlight bleeding - the one at the Apple store was so bad that I could see it in medium lighting, at full brightness - but I was looking for it; however, at half brightness, in the dark - well, I can only imagine how bad it would be;
- Home button is off by a few millimetres (UK spelling);
- When you press down on the bezel of the iPad, it sort of sticks to the glue (I assume) then pops back up (near home button; top left; top right - slightly; bottom right - a lot and the bottom left pushes the bottom left - center down);
- ^ This is annoying with the home button, as when you push it down, it pushes the whole bezel down - this wasn't very common - only one on the table at the Apple store had this problem;

+1

This was my first thought, too.

*light bleed
*screen parting company with back (worsening)
*YouTube vids loading at a ratio of 1 to 10
*connectivity robustness- wifi specifically
*red leather smartcover no longer magnetised
*and yes ill throw it in there the cameras- world class

More often than not using Air in lieu of iPad, its a lemon.

Thing is though, both my iPad 1s exhibit no issues but I'm now waiting for my 4th iPad 2. The previous three have all had bad backlight bleeding. I haven't had similar return issues to this extent with other Apple products.

There *is* a widespread problem with the iPad 2 and you dont have to be an obsessive to see it.

You've gone through 4 iPads!?!?! Geez dude- I get that you spent a lot of money on the thing and you expect it to be perfect...but it's kind of ridiculous to me to be so unhappy with what in all likelihood was a minor flaw, and one in which you "ran under the microscope" to find.

I just don't see why this so called "flaw" is so bothersome to people. Does it really detract from the experience of using the device- does it make it UNUSABLE? Or are people being so anal about something that is only visible in certain, sub-standard settings? Unless the screen is just over-all ****ed up- I don't see why you would need to keep returning and returning something until you get the magical perfect device.

*light bleed (Many see this as an issue, many do not...I'll give you this one).

*screen parting company with back (worsening) (This is just insane! You do have a warranty and should use it for what sounds like an obvious manufacturing defect but to question whether all iPads are lemons because of your issue is stupid)

*YouTube vids loading at a ratio of 1 to 10 (This problem and the next may or may not be a problem with your iPad, it could also be a problem with your home network however).

*connectivity robustness- wifi specifically (see above)

*red leather smartcover no longer magnetised (Say what? What on earth do you do to your things? Then again, the thousands :rolleyes: of other iPad Smart Cover users have been blasting the forums with exactly the same issue so it can't just be something you did to your case eh?)

*and yes ill throw it in there the cameras- world class (The type of cameras were a conscious choice by Apple and does not make the ipad a lemon! They are poor cameras, I'll agree, but not defective)

Nope. I've gone through 3 iPads. I'm *awaiting* my fourth. And no, I didn't have to run anything under a microscope. The problem was quite visible at 50% brightness in a dimly lit room.

My partner's iPad 1 doesn't have the problem. Neither do either of my iPhones. Or my iMac. Or my PC monitor at work.

I don't expect it to be perfect. In fact, my iPad 1 has a little bit of light leak that is more evenly distributed than the blotches on my iPad 2 so I lived with it. The problem on the iPad 2s is so pronounced it's distracting and unreasonable.

I don't think it is a lemon. It seems like it is a lemon because you hear mostly complaints rather than from those having no or very minor problems.

I do think there was a major screw up of not having enough units available for sale. I am still on the BB list (since launch day) for a 64GB 3G model. And no the local BB has been above board on their handling of the ipad2s. I did get a wi-fi model three weeks after launch and the only problem it has is a slight light bleed in the corners. Then again my ipad 1 has the same problem. Since it is minor, it isn't worth returning to end up waiting again.

It really depends on what your definition of lemon is. However, it does seem that Apple has lost their touch. They have always prided themselves in being a company that makes great devices with amazing craftsmanship and quality. However, it seems as of late this is not the case. It may be attributed to the fact that they are producing more items than ever.

This whole backlight bleeding issue is something I think is more widespread that thought. The problem with figuring out how widespread it is, is that typical consumers will not obsess over a product like macrumors users will. They will not put the brightness to 100%, go into a dark room, and see if the screen has bleeding. As a matter of fact, I am sure that many, even if they were to notice, would think it is normal. Ignorance is bliss.

Or maybe it is still the case and these forums are not representative of anything but these forums and we can attribute it to people's standards increasing faster than Apple can (not 'will') keep up with them. Either/or, who knows, right?

Ignorance is bliss, or maybe different standards is bliss, or maybe reasonable use is bliss, or evaluating the product against 'value for money' rather than some idea of 'perfection' is bliss.

More like the rate of OCD is increasing faster than Apple can (or even wants to) keep up with...

I think it's fair to assume that a week after the fourth arrives, you will have gone through four (as in that will be returned as well).

And may I ask: Are you saying the bleeding is visible when the screen is BLACK? Or is it visible during daily, normal usage such as using Safari?

If it's a lemon, take it back (technically, lemon law refers to a product serviced three times for the same defect). No sense coming unglued about it. (Pun intended.) I have noticed stalled videos when browsing YouTube in Safari. Have you used the YouTube app preloaded on the iPad? There are many third-party cases available. The camera is admittedly bad, but I have taken exactly zero pictures with it. Every device I carry doesn't need to be a camera.

It's not a fair assumption at all. As I've already said, I have umpteen other Apple devices that I've been either happy with from day one or have slight defects that I've put up with. Your attempt to paint me as an irrational, compulsive 'returner' is unfair.

If my fourth iPad 2 has a little light leak that's liveable with (like my iPad 1), I'll live with it. If it's blotchy and uneven and ugly I won't live with it.

The bleeding on the iPad 2s so far has been visible when the screen has been black or a dark grey, such as in the videos app or on a site like Daring Fireball with its grey background.

I consider using the video app and visitng websites with dark backgrounds normal use, don't you? On the NY Times website, for example with its white background no - it's not visible.

So if the suggestion is that 'normal' is is only when the background is a light or white one I don't really think that's reasonable. I'd like to be able to use it in all conditions, as I can with my iPad 1, without being distracted by spotlights casting uneven light at the edges of the screen.
