thank you very very very much for your reply, yes we only have 2g gsm (3g soon to come),no i am not for the latest, and in my case, where the low budget is a hindrance, the latest is not the greatest, sure i am a bit confused about, getting a low end lumia like 520 and just fulfilling my needs (fb,browsing) but iphone's user experience and browsing and the "smart" side of the phone appeals me,

and the only greatest android in my budget i would say is the moto g which is available for $270 in pakistan but still no android comes close to it (not even xperia sp/xperia c does comes close but its chipset is mediocore, extremely low on performance as compared to moto g)

so here i list my options
1. Apple iphone 4s
2. Motorola Moto G
3. a cheap lUMIA..

any further help would be greatly appreciated

thank you aswell,by the way I text and use facebook a lot and yes a unique bit i am(sort of want to become) a "utility apps/productivity apps user"....using dictionaries, ebooks, other misc. apps and stuff

The iPhone 4S is still a great product if you don't mind the smaller screen. Just be carful and don't drop it ^^. It's still and has always been a fragile device as it's made out of glass. So basically, in my opinion, if you don't mind the smaller screen and if you can be carful with your phone, get the iPhone (as iOS is still better than Android in my opinions), otherwise get the Moto G, which has the best value/performance ratio of any Android phone (arguably any phone) there is.

So here i am,belong to a 3rd world country,as i cannot afford 5c/5s/5 so buying a used auto gevey 4s running iOS version 6.1.3 quite cheap...I want to know is the 4s worth buying even in 2014? just tell me your most honest and rational opinion please? Should i opt for a moto G/Lumia etc or will the 4s will be fine?is it still in production? how much longer it is gonna supported?

I still use one and bought it when it was new. I think they are of a good build quality and are very reliable.

Not sure what you can afford or how much they are compared to the competition. My inlaws are in a developing country but both have iPhone 5S', drive new european cars, have servants and buy millions of dollars worth of property over here. Being in a developing country doesn't mean people are all poor (i.e. I don't know what you make or how far you are stretching it to get this 4S). Obviously you'll know your finances better than anybody so will have to do that calculation yourself.

In my inlaw's country there's no Apple stores but the parts are everywhere (cheaply) and people can repair iPhones for ~$5 so a lack of official Apple service isn't a biggie. I doubt Apple will support a 4S in a big way (they probably call them 'vintage' by now) BUT what can go wrong?
Only issues I can think of are:
- The glass case cracking (no biggie, can probably be replaced for peanuts in a developing country... I saw somebody quoted ~$3 for one when I was over with my inlaws)
- Home button breaking (same story... cheap/easy to replace)
- Battery going dead... probably my only concern. Check how much it is for some guy to replace them.

The 4S supports iOS 7 and you'll get that upgrade for free. I suspect they will also support iOS 8, but who knows after that? Either way, this won't break your phone... you just might not be able to update the system software in 2-3 years time.

My only other comment is that if you intend to get an iPhone that will last/be easy to repair, a 4S is probably better than a 5. Why? Only because they are easier to repair without stuffing things up. As they progress, Apple make their iPhones more difficult to repair I find. Since they are popular and Apple only makes iPhones (unlike android manufacturers) I think parts/repair knowledge are easy to find with Apple gear.

So the 4S... if you can get a BARGAIN price that won't stretch you too much... I think they are an alright phone. I still use mine and have no immediate plans to upgrade (never had an issue with mine... it uses that latest iOS 7 and I've never seen an app that won't run on my phone due to speed limitations...etc). As a phone they are fast and reliable IMO.

Depends on your usage. I'd say for the regular person, then yes it still makes sense.

The 4S can run iPhone OS 7 quite well I might add. A reason for the 5, might be LTE, but unless there is LTE in Pakistan, then I see no reason why shell out extra $ for an iPhone 5.

I would suggest you go for 4S. I have a 4S myself on iOS 7. I am your neighbor in terms of country and 5S in India costs a staggering 53000 Rupees for base version. That is very very expensive and 5C is not worth the price it commands (40K rupess+). In India as well there is no LTE for mobile phone (but is there for broadband through one provider and limited areas) and 3G is still not cheap so most people use 2G only.
Go with 4S now and wait for couple of years before LTE starts being main stream in our countries and then you buy a better LTE device.

sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm debating the same question, though my location is entirely different from the OP's.

I'm currently using a Galaxy Nexus, which itself is getting slow and unresponsive sometimes.

I don't really care too much about LTE, though we have LTE available, where I live.

Since the Iphone 4S probably won't be getting IOS 8, I was thinking about getting an Iphone 5, but the ones on the second hand market are pretty scuffed up, at least the ones that are within my budget(350 bucks tops).

After reading some mixed opinions on IOS 7 performance on the Iphone 4S I'm unsure, whether it's worth to spend around 250 bucks on a three year old phone. I don't need the latest and greatest.

dudes i live in pakistan where the price of 5c is sky high mate :)

Why not nexus 5.. Top notch android for 350..

Yet Again why pay that much for a 4s when you can get a nexus 5 for 350.. Yes it's not iphone but it's defiantly better than the 4s. I personally have the 4s an have the funds to get whatever phone I choose and I'm getting the nexus 5 over the 5s a finger scanner and .5" screen increase is not enough to justify a 700$ bill
