Unless it's going to be off for days or longer, booting will drain more battery than just leaving it asleep.

Shrug. The folks at wikihow said this:

"Contrary to popular belief, shutting off the iPad when not in use and turning it back on when you do will more often then not, especially in short periods of time, waste battery life because of the energy the iPad takes up trying to boot up/shut down."

Not the best resource possibly but Apple says the ipad had one month of standby time. So, why shut it down on a regular basis?

People seem to come up with strange rituals that end up getting in the way of just enjoying the device. Whatever is technically correct, the right answer is to just use the thing when you want and charge it whenever convenient.

Try actually clicking through and reading the article on Li ion cells. The article isn't on "1990 technology". It's about Li ion cells which is directly relevant.

The problem is that the article discusses charging naked cells. In electronics like laptops and iPads, the charging circuitry is part of the device and regulates the charging cycle. It isn't a dumb charger, so you won't see overcharging effects by leaving it connected, and you will see interesting subtle charge/discharge cycles even while connected from the device's charging circuitry.

The advice simply isn't directly applicable, because you have zero actual control over the battery behavior in these devices. Unlike when you have the cells and a charger that are separate.

Sleep with a reboot every now and then is optimal. Make sure to put it in airplane mode if you're not going to be using it for hours (saves me a few percent overnight).

For general battery health, avoid deep discharges when possible. An example of a deep discharge is draining the battery from 100% to 0%.

Don't worry about anything else.

I have not once ever powered down any iPad or iPhone for that natter. I just let them sleep and charge them when needed.

Sometimes I believe in God, sometimes I don’t. I think it’s 50-50 maybe. But ever since I’ve had cancer, I’ve been thinking about it more. And I find myself believing a bit more. I kind of – maybe it’s ’cause I want to believe in an afterlife. That when you die, it doesn’t just all disappear. The wisdom you’ve accumulated. Somehow it lives on, but sometimes I think it’s just like an on-off switch. Click and you’re gone. And that’s why I don’t like putting on-off switches on Apple devices.

Thanks for the replies-
i don't mean power it down every time, i would put it to sleep when i know ill use it within a few minute but if i know i wont be using my ipad for an hour or 2 will it benefit me to completely power the ipad down.

Forget about it. Leave it on. I've left mine asleep after unplugging from the charger for 12hrs. After 12hrs, it was still at 100%.

we are in 2013 technology, not 1990 that you are speaking of. plz dont spread false info about batteries. most people leave it charge over night and don't see any battery degrade

so then it is true that leaving your device charging all night wont degrade your battery.
