I upgraded to an XR just a few weeks ago. It was a good deal on a refurbished (and in reality clearly unused) handset, the contract met my needs and the timing was just right for me. It's a fantastic phone in every way and I've no regrets at all.

Would I change it again for a 2019 XR in a few weeks? Of course not, that's absolutely nuts!

I mean, I purchased the XR this weekend because I had to. If my 7 hadn’t stopped performing, I would have waited. Your question is a bit too general as it really depends on individual circumstances.
Gee that scares me.
I have the 7+ and still working perfectly - hoping it does not give out until the XI comes out....
Still hoping the Apple Card will announce a special financing for the new phones coming out shortly.....

Even if, you can always buy a used 6 for $100 to get you over 2 weeks to the new release

I think the XR will be discontinued like the X was. Otherwise it would swallow sales of the XR2. Yeah I’d say just go for it.

That would leave a huge gap between the $569 iPhone 8 Plus and $749 iPhone 11R. And unlike the X vs. XS, there's a huge difference between the XR and 11R.

More likely that the 8 will disappear and the XR take its place surely?

Yes but not because the Xr2 may or may not be our next month but because the current Xr will probably get a price drop. So waiting a month or so gives you the option of the new phone or the cheaper current phone.

I don't believe the 8 is going anywhere. It's the last iPhone with the home button. I expect it to stay around a little longer.

Apple aren’t exactly known for holding people’s hands in that way - the home button is dead as far as they’re concerned...

Agreed, the home button on my work 7+ is not very good - not reliable enough - I much rather prefer the Face ID on my personal Xs Max phone.....

I think the lineup will look like this:

- 8 / 8 Plus
- Xr successor
- Xs and Xs Max successor

8 and 8 Plus are amazing phones, especially with the price drop coming in September. I can't see them going away. 7 and 7 Plus are likely to be discontinued and replaced by the 8 series.

There's a reason why i picked the 8 Plus over the Xr.

If they keep the Xr next to it's successor, many will buy the original Xr instead and not the new one. The only real improvement would be a dual camera and a faster A13 chip (average consumer doesn't care about the chip difference, they don't even know the difference tbh and even the A11 is really fast). And other minor things like bilateral charging and so on. Not really important, everybody's waiting for the 2020 refresh.

The dual-camera on 11R is a massive difference. That's the feature that separated the XR and XS. It will be the same feature that allows Apple to sell XR and 11R concurrently.

Absolutely correct. It will be the new ‘entry-level’ (Not budget) iPhone in Apples line up. The A11 Bionic processor is still very much relevant to its predecessors.

I guess they still sell the 7 right now so it’s likely the 8 will fill that slot, but it’s also likely the XR will fill the slot above that. Your argument about the XR stealing sales from the XR2 doesn’t really make sense, that’s always a risk whenever an older/cheaper model is still available but it’s been their deliberate strategy for years, ultimately its just a way of catering to different pockets.

Either way the time of the home button is fading, the X series isn’t exclusive anymore, it’s the default iPhone for most people. Don’t expect the 8 to stay around forever just because you don’t like change.

The biggest separator was the price point. And for the price, the Xr is a really well-packaged phone.

But it makes sense. Less expensive Xr with one camera, and a pricier model with a dual camera. And then the way more expensive "Pro" model with three cameras.

Question is if the average customer even cares about a dual camera. (I know, it sounds stupid). As long as the Xr is capable of portrait mode and the bokeh effect.

While i love the dual camera setup on my 8+ with the optical zoom and so on, the Xr sold really really well this year. Most people picked the Xr over the 8+. Obviously the Xr is cheaper than the Xs, but the 8 Plus is 50$ less than the Xr. Not much of a difference.

This research is from June. If people cared about a dual camera setup, they would have picked the 7 Plus or 8 Plus (heck, even the X) over the Xr.

Maybe this will change when they do two models (Xr and successor with dual camera). We'll see.

I get that and it's fine. The X series is amazing and i see that trend of having a bezel-less design. I'm just thinking maybe the average consumer doesn't care about a dual camera since the Xr's camera is amazing for the fact that it's a single camera system and therefore is likely to pick the Xr over the 11(r) or however it's called.

I picked the 8 Plus for that dual camera system with the optical zoom and for the fact that there is 3D Touch. I know there are changes coming to the 3D Touch with iOS 13, but obviously i didn't knew that when i bought it last year in December. I would rather have the Xs Max, but it's so damn expensive. I buy them out right with no plan and no monthly payments. Will keep them for a couple of years. My old 6s also lasted for 3 years.

It's not quite fair to compare XR to iPhone 7 or 8. They are different generations with different bezels and features.

Consumers care about the quality of photos. The dual-camera 11R offers that, at least the perception of it. Many consumers believe having two lenses obviously produces better photos, even if it's a placebo effect.

About 10 years ago, we were in a megapixel race. Today, every manufacturer is engaged in a race to have more lenses.

For 2019, Apple's entire marketing message revolves around having more lenses. 3 > 2 > 1. Even the iPad Pro is expected to get more lenses. I think consumers will recognize the 11R as being significantly better than XR.

I ordered a XR 256GB last Thursday, to replace my 16GB iPhone 6 (which has 700MB storage currently remaining); Verizon offering $250 off the XR , and I don't really care about the 2019 phones, so a good time to buy for me.
