Well, nothing different this year.Unless you just got to have a phone now, I would wait.

I amma with XI MAXWho knows, it might have a faster CPU.
I am sticking with my MAX.
Gee that scares me.I mean, I purchased the XR this weekend because I had to. If my 7 hadn’t stopped performing, I would have waited. Your question is a bit too general as it really depends on individual circumstances.
Even if, you can always buy a used 6 for $100 to get you over 2 weeks to the new releaseGee that scares me.
I have the 7+ and still working perfectly - hoping it does not give out until the XI comes out....
Still hoping the Apple Card will announce a special financing for the new phones coming out shortly.....
I think the XR will be discontinued like the X was. Otherwise it would swallow sales of the XR2. Yeah I’d say just go for it.
More likely that the 8 will disappear and the XR take its place surely?I think the XR will be discontinued like the X was. Otherwise it would swallow sales of the XR2. Yeah I’d say just go for it.
That would leave a huge gap between the $569 iPhone 8 Plus and $749 iPhone 11R. And unlike the X vs. XS, there's a huge difference between the XR and 11R.
Apple aren’t exactly known for holding people’s hands in that way - the home button is dead as far as they’re concerned...I don't believe the 8 is going anywhere. It's the last iPhone with the home button. I expect it to stay around a little longer.
Agreed, the home button on my work 7+ is not very good - not reliable enough - I much rather prefer the Face ID on my personal Xs Max phone.....Apple aren’t exactly known for holding people’s hands in that way - the home button is dead as far as they’re concerned...
If they keep the Xr next to it's successor, many will buy the original Xr instead and not the new one. The only real improvement would be a dual camera and a faster A13 chip (average consumer doesn't care about the chip difference, they don't even know the difference tbh and even the A11 is really fast). And other minor things like bilateral charging and so on. Not really important, everybody's waiting for the 2020 refresh.

I think the lineup will look like this:
- 8 / 8 Plus
- Xr successor
- Xs and Xs Max successor
8 and 8 Plus are amazing phones, especially with the price drop coming in September. I can't see them going away. 7 and 7 Plus are likely to be discontinued and replaced by the 8 series.
There's a reason why i picked the 8 Plus over the Xr.

The dual-camera on 11R is a massive difference. That's the feature that separated the XR and XS. It will be the same feature that allows Apple to sell XR and 11R concurrently.
I guess they still sell the 7 right now so it’s likely the 8 will fill that slot, but it’s also likely the XR will fill the slot above that. Your argument about the XR stealing sales from the XR2 doesn’t really make sense, that’s always a risk whenever an older/cheaper model is still available but it’s been their deliberate strategy for years, ultimately its just a way of catering to different pockets.
Either way the time of the home button is fading, the X series isn’t exclusive anymore, it’s the default iPhone for most people. Don’t expect the 8 to stay around forever just because you don’t like change.
The biggest separator was the price point. And for the price, the Xr is a really well-packaged phone.
But it makes sense. Less expensive Xr with one camera, and a pricier model with a dual camera. And then the way more expensive "Pro" model with three cameras.
Question is if the average customer even cares about a dual camera. (I know, it sounds stupid). As long as the Xr is capable of portrait mode and the bokeh effect.
While i love the dual camera setup on my 8+ with the optical zoom and so on, the Xr sold really really well this year. Most people picked the Xr over the 8+. Obviously the Xr is cheaper than the Xs, but the 8 Plus is 50$ less than the Xr. Not much of a difference.
This research is from June. If people cared about a dual camera setup, they would have picked the 7 Plus or 8 Plus (heck, even the X) over the Xr.
Maybe this will change when they do two models (Xr and successor with dual camera). We'll see.
