I really can't stand Office 08 for one reason... IT'S BROKEN WITH SPACES. If I had a dollar for how many times Word changed it's space while I'm in the middle of writing a paper, I could drop out of college and retire at 19. It's so frustrating, and when I get my paper back in the right space the formatting pallet is in a different space! WTF Microsoft? I've gone to iWork '08 for doing everything, and I upgraded to '09 for the semester. I do have Office 2007 installed on the Vista side if I ever need to use it, but it's really awful on the Mac.

The most common reasons for problems with the update are:
* moving the Office folder out of the Applications folder
* running an app like Monolingual or Xslimmer
* manually deleting some portion of the Office install

Have you done any of these?

Regards,
Nadyne.

Nope
Nope
Nope

This is pissing me off.

Instead of crying about Word and how it doesn't work [with Spaces], is slow, is worse than the windows version, and "you need it because it saves in .doc format", why not just use textedit? .txt can be read on Windows and Mac, is small, doesn't need proprietary software, and TextEdit will work with Spaces.

I'm not saying you *shouldn't* use Word, just realize that you can make your lives easier if you really want to.

Office 2008 is a piece of crap. I'm sorry, the new features are cool and everything, but the problem is if you can't start it, the new feature won't help you.

My dad has got the MacBook Pro. I think it's about 3 years old. Anyways, we bought the Microsoft Office 2008 in NY and he tried to install. He could install it, but not open it, because Office was looking for some kind of registration or upgrade or whatever. Anyways it couldn't connect to the internet. So we went to the Apple Store and they were doing all possible things to get Office started. After 2 hours they told us, that there isn't a problem with the mac, but a problem with Office. So now, my dad can't use it anymore.

that's mainly why i use openoffice.org. besides it offers support for .doc and .docx so i'm not missing any compatibility

If you purchased an upgrade of Office 2008, then you need to have Office 2004 installed on your system.

If you haven't yet, you should call Microsoft tech support to get help from them. With a retail purchase of Office, you get two or three free calls to tech support. (I should know the exact number of free calls you get, but I can never remember!) Our tech support will be able to get this solved for you.

Have you tried the steps outlined here?

Thanks for posting that. I was able to find the script error window. I pressed OK and it hung. I tried again, hit edit and the install continued.

I've been using MS Office since version 3.0 for Windows and I use Office 2008 extensively, especially Excel. It works perfectly fine for me. If you take some time to learn how to use it, you shouldn't have problems. All you MS Office bashers need to remember that Office was a Mac application suite before it was released for Windows.

bad MS Office 2008

Personally I didn't experience many crashes from MS Office 2008.
However, I disliked the toolbars to disappear when I open e.g. word.
I'd have to deselect the toolbar, then select it again and i get arrows to expand the toolbar and when I change e.g font size, the toolbar appears and will stay there until I close Word. So I've trashed it permanently.
No more microsoft applications om my MBP until they perform as they should.

For my work I use iWork '09 and sometimes Openoffice.org 3.0.0 (which runs faster than NeoOffice at the moment).
Both work excellent. for statistics and graphs I prefer R. Graphs in Numbers '09 have already improved, and for a second release of iWork I think Apple has done a good job. Some functions however are still missing, but we'll probably see them next year when iWork '10 comes out :p

Personally, office 2008 has never crashed on me

But the spaces problem, my god that is ANNOYING AS HELL
I hate the way Microsoft on their help section just says apple is aware of the problem, good for apple, but its your ****** software that isn't working with their spaces. They'd never go Microsoft is aware of the problem if itunes didn't work with vista. (Remember guys, they fixed that themselves) I don't even know what these constant office 2008 updates bring, and I can't find out any more either because apparently I don't have office installed when trying to update...don't really need all the hassle of a reinstall either!

Office has been fine to me, ergo, it hasn't crashed. But I still hate it. It takes 20-30 seconds to open up. That is too long. I have resorted to using iWork for my essay/presentation work.(Well, Keynote is better than Powerpoint anyways).

Having to move around Spaces can be annoying when the toolbar is moved auto-magically, without me doing anything!

... It takes 20-30 seconds to open up. That is too long. ...
That IS too long! There must be something unusual about your setup. I can launch Excel, Word and Powerpoint simultaneously and all 3 open within 2-3 seconds for me.

Well I meant when I start up my mac. When it is already running and I have opened and quit Word already, it still takes a good 10 seconds to fully open up.

Sorry, guys. It's a known issue. We're working with Apple to figure out how to fix it, but it's a big hairy problem. Apple has looked at our windowing code and can't make any recommendations for how to fix it to work with Leopard's window manager. If you want the full hairy technical details, check out this blog post from one of our senior developers: risks and rewards. The stuff specific to the Spaces issue comes about halfway through that post.

I have to run VMWare and Excel 2007 because I need more advanced functionality like VBA. I have no idea why they removed it but it was a terrible terrible idea. I guess if the goal was to sell copies of Office 2007 rather than 2008, they succeeded.

i got word over iwork despite the different in price cuz i'm more familiar with word than iwork...but then i can't friggin' install it...
i keep getting a "setup assistant" page when i go and try to get my product id...so mad i think i might as well get an iwork...

I much prefer iWork. Office 2008 isn't even the same as on a PC. So it's still learning something new. iWork is way better, much more intuitive.
