iCup as well. I also thought I was the only one. It's habit now, but I feel that we shouldn't have to do this Steve.

My bad. I should have used different sentences. I mean that the speaker could have been placed on the side (like the iPhone) and not at the bottom.
And that instead of a single speaker there should have put 2.

I agree. When I first opened mine and played it in a quiet room (the Apple Store was never quiet) I was VERY disappointed by the sound placement. It kept pulling my eyes to that side of the screen. The iPad1 had a much better speaker placement.

If they'd put a speaker on the other end of the screen it would have been better. The top would be my preference since I mostly use my iPad in landscape mode.

i think it sounds excellent. There is plenty of level too. For such a thin device, it's incredible you can get that kind of depth out of it. Just cup your hand around the speaker and the sound is projected towards you. Very well thought out indeed.

+1

From the ifix it teardown, it showed that there are two speakers in both iPad versions- it's just that they are both Mono- which doesn't really make sense....

I found this mildly annoying too. After a few days, cupping my hand around the speaker became a habit. I don't see how they could have put the speaker anywhere else with the new form factor.

I agree. They could have done something like the did for the iPhone, and put 2 speakers for stereo sound. I do prefer my iPhone 4 than my wife's iPad 2.

The iPhone only has one speaker, the other is a microphone.

Stereo from two speakers only works when one is on each side of you, and I would much rather a single stereo speaker than two mono speakers, which is what the first one had.

I'm waiting on my Portenzo case to come. Supposedly it's designed to funnel the audio out the front. I'll post a review about it when I receive mine. :)

The iPhone has only one speaker. It's not stereo.

One of my speakers doesn't work... Do you think Apple will replace my iPhone?

Uh, the speaker on the iPhone IS at the bottom. What are you talking about?

As many in this thread have already said, I thought I was the only one who 'cupped' the speaker. But I guess it's a common phenomenon.

No! There is only one speaker! You can even see this on Apple's website. The other 'speaker' is actually the microphone for your voice as you talk on the phone. Sound comes out of one and the only one speaker on the iPhone4.

It's amazing how some people can't understand sarcasm.

Thank you so much!!!! After 3.5 years, you've finally cleared that up.

The placement is at least better than on the iPad 1 where your sound was entirely muffled when you used it in portrait mode, resting it on something soft, like your blanket in bed, your pants or even your belly ;)

I found the speaker placement on the iPad 2 rather dim too, the original placement makes much more sense, and is more pleasing to the eye, but the rest of it is very cool, still on my trusty old iPad 1 though

Get a pair of good headphones? That will trump the sound quality of the iPads speaker.
