We all but (sorta) know LTE is not coming to the :apple:Watch 2. No doubt that LTE would be a resources pig (power and space) and indications are that Apple is working on a custom lower power chip that will probably not be ready for a year or so. I would rather Apple devote precious recourses to adding unique health/fitness sensors. Would like to see things like BP, glucose, temperature and maybe some type of stress and/or pressure type indicators (could be used in weight training and in everyday situations). Also don't like the idea of paying my cell provider anymore $ for another device.

As a running who has (almost) always carried their iPhone since 2007 and a firm Garmin user the GPS is kind of 'fluff' (to me) but will take it.

Think a few care if I'm not mistaken lol. Shhh the grown ups are talking.

This is a forum where one posts a question or thought and others reply to that.

Does anyone else find it ironic, that someone claims to be a grown-up and runs around with a superman logo on his wrist? I would more categorise it as "man-child" than a grown-up.

You do realise no one is listening to your posts...? The last child who tried to insult got ignored and I am sure it will be same for you. Yes it is a Superman logo jealous!?!? I think so. If you have 0 to add to what is being discussed then don't say anything. Some people are really sad that they have to look for arguments online lol. Your life must be boring ✌️

Whether someone is a grown-up or not has to do with maturity rather than what one wears. Otherwise, you might as well call all the AW owners with Mickey Mouse on their wrist "man-child/woman-child."

I don't care about cellular connectivity or GPS. My current apple watch does plenty and I have no desire to replace it every one or two years. OS upgrades are a different kettle of fish: I'll take all of those I can get!

Personally, I don't think Apple wants the average buyer to feel pressure to replace their watch hardware with each new release. Watches are very personal items that people become emotionally attached to. They're traditionally given as gifts to mark special occasions or "life-events" and worn for decades afterwards. So I'm thinking a 5-10 year lifespan will be closer to the norm, with well-cared-for old models coming to be regarded as collectors items and sought after.

I highly doubt that's possible with smartwatches, or any other tech devices for that matter.

I just replaced the battery on one of my Gen 1 shuffles. 10 years from purchase (admittedly the old battery didn't play for long in recent years)

All it would take is a 3rd party battery-replacement service. Apple might even offer that service in time?

Apple already offers battery replacement for the AW. A shuffle is pretty dumbed down and only plays music. A tech that serves multiple functions typically don't last as long, especially with newer and more desirable functions that'll come along.

Thought I'd ask. I don't really care or want it because it would mean a different # and or another charge/data ontop of phone. Why can't someone invent a app that mirrors / clones your # number that can be used on wifi for things like Whatsapp etc.

I feel like apple will try to negotiate a special very reduced price plan for apple watch with carriers.

I see that being the only way a radio in a watch being successful, going by history.

The :apple:Watch already has WiFi and BT which could download the entire world atlas in a couple of seconds. The bottleneck is the S1 chip and/or the software/processing. Adding cell service would not increase the speed.

not true , im using maps on the watch beta , they work fine.

I'm on your side. I would like to uncouple it from the phone at some point, but I don't make enough phone calls for that to be the reason. More so quicker app updates as they wouldn't need to consult the phone for data, although watchOS 3 practically fixes the slowness issue anyway, so it's a moot point.

Can't see the benefit of having just the watch on its own, even with a little Bluetooth earpiece like the Moto Hint, which is the way it'll definitely go if it happens.

Our phones are getting bigger because we want to consume more media. Dropping the phone entirely and replacing it with a smart watch defeats the purpose.

I would love it if it had cellular connectivity. Imagine being able to leave the house with no wallet (Apple Pay), no keys (in the the watch is your front door key) and a communication device strapped to your wrist. it'll be a few years, but it maybe it will happen one day.

Just so that you know, Apple Pay doesn't require cellular connectivity and will work on the AW without iPhone.

Doesn't need cellular for the first two. Apple Pay has worked from the beginning. Once Apple opens up the NFC chip for the home kit keyless entry, you'll have that.
Doing voice calls on the watch, while convenient if you're in the opposite end of your house, aren't great from a speaker standpoint...far too quiet to hear outside or over other ambient noise.

Correct -it's the watch becoming an independent communications device that amplifies the utility of the first two. At the moment anything my watch can do my phone can do better. Except being big and bulky (and fitness tracking). If I didn't need the phone always, then the watch starts becoming much more useful.
I'm not suggesting the watch completely replaced the phone. Obviously I am not going to host a two hour conference call from my watch - but for many occasions, it would be cool to not have anything in my pockets - going for a meal, going clubbing, formal occasions, sports etc.

Yep, I actually paid for something today while my watch was in Airplane Mode.

So, how do you think having a cellular connection makes either of the first two any better??

Because to would allow me to leave the house with nothing in my pockets. I'll happen. Just as iOS is gradually eroding the Mac, the Watch will gradually start to take on more of the phone's functions, allowing the phone to get bigger (as you won't need to take it everywhere with you).

Again, you're not actually providing any rationale as to why those features would be made better by having mobile data.
The latter part of what your suggesting....sounds like people would just not have phones and use their iPads.

Except the AW in the current form can't really replace the iPhone. It's not always appropriate to dictate texts nor carry a phone conversation on the watch, not to mention not being able to surf the Internet. I'll still carry the iPhone everywhere with me for those times.

If you read my original post, you'll see I never actually stated they would be better with a cellular radio. I simply imagined the type of device that could be the *only* device I need to take out, when I know I'm not going to need a bigger screen.
And yes I think iPad + a more capable watch would be pretty sweet - until they release resizable screens

True but sometimes it can - and the new handwriting recognition in watchOS 3 means short messages can be written without dictation.
