I've seen the same thing. When the first gen was the only iPhone around it was a rare occurrence for me to see one. Apple releasing the 3G really brought in a lot more people (like myself!).

I see people using their iPhones, and I just to myself "Cool. I hope they're enjoying it."

I dunno, iPhone hasn't 'jumped the shark' for me yet. I think some colours may be needed next year to help "diversify" the offerings, but otherwise I'm OK with having the 5 people around me on the subway using the same phone as me.

Ditto.

It's also a cool way to meet people. "Hey, you have an iPhone too? What apps do you have?". I met this one kid at Old Navy while we were both waiting for our girlfriends to try on clothes. We were showing each other what apps we had and he even let me try a few of the games he bought. Cool guy.

Ya i have noticed it too. I was at a hospital visiting my friend and when I was leaving in the elevator everyone (4 other people) had iPhones two of them nurses. It is evident with the release of the 3G S the iphone is becoming a more widely excepted device in emergency services and the business world. Personally, I cant wait till next year to see what apple has done to make the best phone in the world even better. ilove apple products and the fact that they are killing PC in computers and now are taking over the mobile world fast makes me hope they will open up to customization and lower prices. IMHO

Well obviously YES there are more iPhone around as Apple sells millions more every quarter.

But the iPhone very much is still a cool status symbol with lots of wow factor. That is not going to fade. Apple will keep adding cool software to it and it will remain the king! Apple is by far winning the true mobile computing revolution, and this time they learned from their early mistakes in the past with personal computers :D

Soon pretty much everyone will have an iPhone like they do iPods!
:apple:

Where I live I hardly ever see anyone with an iPhone. I've only seen around maybe 10 people with iPhones. That's not including people I know with one. Then that number goes up to 15.:D

Maybe it's because Rogers' *cough* prices *cough* aren't very attractive to Canadians. :D

I noticed this too. A few more people in my area at work have them. The other day when I was at the chiropractor's the other guy that was infront of me had one. I went to put mine down so it didn't get crushed in my pocket and the guy goes "hey, that looks like his phone". I wonder if that was jailbroken or not...haha.

I noticed more when the 3G first launched... since then I see an increase in 10 year olds walking around with an iPhone, but generally speaking.. not too much more on an increase.

Does anyone ever feel like a douche slightly when you woop out your iphone by yourself at a public place?

Ive definitely noticed the increase in iphons...soo many people at my school have one, and whenever I go out, I am guarunteed to see atleast 2 people with an iPhone...Apple FTW

Yes I've noticed more iPhones! If it's not an iPhone it's an iPod touch... Recently I was on the plane and of course I was listening to music and playing games.. But so was the person across the aisle.. The person infront and behind him.. So I was like cool.. I leaned my chair back and the lady behind me in the middle seat had an iPhone touch.. So now I'm like dang.. My mom sitting beside me had an iPhone And when we was getting off the planei noticed that the lady next to my mom had an iPhone!
I used to care if alot of people had the same phone I had and I would usually go trade or sum and get sum else.. But the difference with the iPhone and other phones is I usually don't care if someone else has one because theirs always something different on their iPhone.. Plus I feel as if I go get another phone then it would be like a downgrade..

Given the proliferation of iPhone and iPod Touches, I'm surprised there aren't any social / ad-hoc networking type apps (think zune).

Since the iPhone is way more popular, and it's far more likely you'll see someone with a compatible device, a zune-like app for sending local messages or media could really be a hit.

Except for, you know, the whole no background apps thing ......

I was the first in my family to get an iPhone. I got the original about 2 weeks before they announced the 3G. My husband had gotten an LG Vu at the same time. He hated it but loved my iPhone. Although I knew I could take back the original, I kept it to give to my sister & then got the 3G when it came out. My husband got one too & then so did my mother. Since then, my stepfather, my brother, my brother-in-law, my nephew, & my other sister & her husband (my other brother-in-law :-0) all have one. I see them everywhere now. Part of it is, as someone mentioned upthread, that when you have something you notice when others have it too. Part of it is that they are increasingly popular. But I agree with another thing mentioned upthread -- that more people in general have smart phones. I also think that this is the beginning of a shift in portable computing. We'll see more & better things added to "cell phones" & they will become even more like portable computers that happen to allow you to make phone calls as well.

This thread is making me want to go out and pick up a Palm Pre for the simple fact that no one else has one.

I've definitely noticed more since owning one myself. We have 3 in our house right now that are in use. My brother and SIL just jumped ship from Verizon to ATT for the 3GS, a friend just got one, another's getting one in August and still more plan to move over the next few months from Verizon.

I can't imagine what will happen if/when Verizon actually has an iPhone... it will be madness. I know so many that would have one in a heartbeat if they offered it.

What's interesting to me is the cost. Not of the phone but of the plan. It is expensive to have an iPhone -- you are required to have the $30 data plan plus additional dollars for texting. (I realize some people can get around the data plan - I'm talking the general public). To me, this is a significant thing because people are now used to spending this money & will use the devices as more than just phones leading to big changes for the future.

They do exist. I don't think they're widely used, though. Loopt is one (if you turn on the optional loopt mix). Many of the social networking apps also allow you to post your location, too, but that probably isn't what you were thinking of.

I see WAY more than I did even back in January when I got mine.

. . . now are taking over the mobile world fast makes me hope they will open up to customization and lower prices.

Naaaah ;)

Does anyone ever feel like a douche slightly when you woop out your iphone by yourself at a public place?

Nope, but depending where I am I feel like I might get mugged. It's like back when I got an iPod Video. It wasn't my first iPod and they were dead popular by then, but the colour screen marked it out as brand new . . .

Yes, I've noticed more and more iPhones. But we all have different apps anyway, so I feel mine is different. And it seems some people barely know how to customise their phone, or even use system preferences. I must have seen 10 iPhones at Wimbledon but no one else was using the Wimbledon app.
