It's a pretty friendly place, so long as you stay away from the nuthouse brigades that nest up the iPhone/iPad and News forums.

Though with that said, the few people I've come to dislike on sight do make me wish I could reach through my screen so I could give them the vigorous beating they so desperately deserve.

I love how you worded those two statements in your post. I'm still smiling.

Thanks you! :D

I'm of the opposite opinion of the place. It might be because I post in the lower sections of the forums more often than not these days, but there are far more people I like than dislike around here. yup! and this forum promotes stupid people by not allowing them to be called out for their sheer stupidity.

its one of those "Everyone gets a participation award" things.

Not really. Rather, I get the sense that the forum prioritises courtesy and mutual respect (which, in general, generates a pretty decent atmosphere) over dealing robustly with the egregiously stupid.

Re the individuals whose posts you dislike, simply put them on ignore. Here, I will concede that I don't always succeed in taking my own advice, but - in a world where there are stresses and strains and - occasionally conflict - in my 'real world' - personally, I have no real desire to replicate that in an online environment.

Sorry to bump the thread, but I just wanted to throw in my 2c.

I've found this to be a very bipolar site. Some sections, such as the Mac, iPod, Software and Services forums are great. You always get great advice and 99% of people in there are friendly.

Other forums - namely iPhone/iPad and News are a disaster. I find they're overrun by people who simply think they're better than other people, and who constantly bait others into arguments. I find I can rarely post in those sections without some jumped up kid arguing for no reason at all. Then there's the fact that nobody is allowed to have an opinion in there. If you have a pro-apple opinion, the haters jump on you, and if you have an anti-apple opinion, the apple fans jump on you. It's pretty ridiculous.

It's a shame, as I'd quite like to join in with some of the news story discussions now, but I just can't be bothered any more.

Objectively, yes, of course, I agree with you, it is pretty ridiculous.

Subjectively, though, I suspect that quite a number of individuals derive some of their sense of self, and their (bizarrely elevated) sense of membership of an 'imagined community' from their ownership and purchase of Apple products.

Yes, viewed rationally, this is absurd. Nevertheless, I have long felt rather uneasy with the rather uncritical adulation with which the late Mr Jobs is viewed by a significant minority of Apple buyers, along with the borderline reverence - almost akin to a cult - which attends any mention of his name (which is evidenced by a number of spectacularly weird threads where the proper noun 'Steve' is is invoked in dreamy tones).

Surely one can respect the late Mr Jobs, recognise his exceptionally high design standards, admire his products, applaud his vision, salute his impeccable taste (most of the time), deplore his arrogance, despise the way he treated some people, and bear in mind that he was a brilliant, and gifted, if deeply flawed human being, not a divinity hitch hiking his way through a sojourn on this planet and stopping off to design Apple computers on the way.

I think the fact that some of our fellow members derive some of their sense of identity from their ownership or purchase of Apple products means that they see any criticism of Apple (or of some of its specific products, or of its founder) as an attack on themselves, and react accordingly with a vehement response.

I had my Dad's 1954 watch that was self winding. As you swung your arm in normal walking or other activities, it wound. Now couldn't an accelerometer or other such device be made to charge the watch. Maybe? or skin touch or daylight or all the above? I bet they are working on it.

I dont think most people have an issue with others opinions, when they are clearly as such

however, there are a certain number of users. while not astronomical, who espout that these opininos as fact. Or outright refuse or refute fact. It doesn't matter what is said, or what evidence is pointed to the contrary, these particular individuals iwill absolutely refuse to back off, shut up and accept that they were incorrect in their assertions.

these are the only "fanboys" in which I referred to earlier. You can see many of them posting everyday clear and obvious FUD based on absolutely zero evidence and they repeat it over and over again, making them believe if they repeat it enough it becomes fact.

Plain and simple, there is no mechanism on these boards for dealing with these individuals. Aside from putting them on your ignore list, but inevitably, even if you have ignored them, their conversation gets quoted and creeps into others posts.

I would name a few, but that would get me banned. these individuals have proven to absolutely show complete willfull ignorance and only purpose is to stir up trouble.

LOL I'd say if you truly "hate" most the members you should just stick to the forums that gel better with you.

I've found most people here friendly and helpful when I've run into issues.

But I've been on forums where that's not the case. I just move on. Not worth your time to participate in a community that you don't enjoy.

Sheesh. Is that MacRumors? Because this is a side of MacRumors I do not like. I'm almost certain to face backlash on this post

You never face backlash for writing about something that most people won't care about.

On the contrary, I generally find that things are more civil here than a lot of other places. I think it also matters which forums and topic threads you're participating in. If you mostly post in the topics where people actually have to know something to be of use, there's a lot less silly crap.

If you want to see what it looks like when people are serious dicks go read any sports site's comments. Not many people are dumb enough to think that they're smarter than Tim Cook, but every other poster on a sports site thinks he (and it's always a "he") could be a GM.

Didn't I tell you to stay away from the peyote?

You didn't say nothing about mescaline.

Oh, and here...

I don't know what it is, but it scares me.

Just now, I briefly spotted the commanding verb 'Sneer' at the very bottom of this page…….

A few minutes ago, alerted partly by this very thread, (because I hadn't noticed anything whatsoever and had clean forgotten about the significance of the date), I did have the honour to see 'Applaud' and 'attack' feature on two different threads in our humble abode where political and social matters may be discussed.

So, what did people say to me?
- Jokes about shaking wrist under table in public being a bad idea

That was a good one.

Dude, in life and specially in anonymous forums like this one where people have the advantage of expressing themselves without facing real life consequences, there is a lot of fighting for "being right" instead of coming to a mutual agreement or just listening to others point of view.

I have had to call the attention to even "Demi-God" moderators for bulling. Still, there is no point because that would be me trying to be "right", and even if I am right, what is the point? So all I can do is let them know my point of view and that is it, I'll keep my way.

Users with Demi-God/Goddess are not moderators.

As a verb on a button alongside the 'Post Reply' button has just advised, I can cheerfully 'Corroborate' your post.

Users with Demi-God/Demi-Goddess titles are not, in fact, Moderators.

Moderators have user titles which say, (obviously),'Moderator', or 'Admin', or 'Moderator Emeritus'.

I have been requested - by push button - to 'Reiterate' what I have just written, and am now duly doing so...
