Before I bought the MacBook Air, I joined this forum to research it. See what others had to say about it, ask questions, etc. So, naturally I ended up visiting the MBA threads compulsively and habitually. I don't usually leave said thread. I just answer questions, help troubleshoot, tell people to stop arguing about RAM, etc.

Then, when MacRumors posted about the Apple Watch and its battery life expectancy, I decided to post. Most of the people in the MBA threads are pretty harmless. Some of them are... dare I say it, bad apples? But it's generally not a toxic atmosphere.

I posted something along the lines of: Man, I think battery life quote sucks. They should have done something better. It would be cool if they had a means to recharge the device on the go... like shake to charge!

Oh boy.
I have 17 replies.

To clarify, when I mentioned that 'shake to charge', I wasn't suggesting that they start making people shake their arms just to charge up the watch. I was saying, that was something they did, and it was smart and I thought maybe it would be cool if Apple did something LIKE that.

So, what did people say to me?
- Jokes about shaking wrist under table in public being a bad idea
- Jokes about Tim Cook furiously shaking his wrist on stage
- People telling me that Apple is smart, but they can't change physics ROFL
- It's simple physics, you dumb
- Apple is perfect and I'm just a dumb idiot who doesn't know as much as Apple so I should keep my mouth shut

Sheesh. Is that MacRumors? Because this is a side of MacRumors I do not like. I'm almost certain to face backlash on this post, but I'm really hoping that some people can assure me that maybe those were just 'Front Page posters' who notoriously scan for anti-Apple and must all gang up on said person and tell them how inferior and stupid they are, and mock them.

Also, as an aside, how is 5 hours of battery life good?
It always makes me laugh when you say something and then you get a load of replies from people who haven't thought long enough about what you were actually saying. Your idea about shake to charge is only like an automatic watch or a kinetic watch and these are simply charged when you walk or move about. A good suggestion sir. The people that made fun of it are the clowns and they probably know it now. ;)

What I have found is that most people on this forum take an extreme stance on some topic or other and do not even try to see or understand the points other people make. They do not see the forum as a place to discuss and learn something or help people, but as a place where they can dump their opinion, attach everyone vigorously that disagrees and leave again.

The forum has changed in recent years. It has become worse, and it is difficult to tell why. It is as if the more mobile computing orientation of Apple with the iPhone and the iPad has attracted a more vitrioloic audience. Maybe the audience has become younger also.

In any case I find the forum less enjoyable than say 4 years ago.

AGAIN.
I suggested that Apple come up with some way to charge the device on the go, not requiring you to plug it in.

Shake to charge was an example of one method that Rolex uses. That's not feasible for the Apple watch.

Hmmm well I was agreeing with your point and sticking up for you after reading the OP, so I am surprised to see such a rude response from you. I have been the victim myself of being jumped on by multiple posters when they haven't understood what I have said.

Perhaps the reason you hate people is because you are abrasive, looking for a fight, and get the reaction from people that you deserve? I even visited that thread and posted in your defence but will remove it now you have replied to me like this. Strange people about on the interwebs.

Well, there we are then.

Close the door on your way out!

Well, what on earth is wrong with a thread title that asks whether a better way of charging the Apple Watch exists than the one currently available?

This is because, firstly, it would serve to focus attention on what the OP says he would like to discuss, and secondly, it would serve to ensure that the thread did not start with the sort of tetchy tone which is almost inevitable with a thread where the verb 'hate' makes an appearance.

While rolexes charge through movement, that would not be possible with a smartwatch at this point, because the electric charge required is much, much, much too large. Traditional watches run on very, very little kinetic or electric energy that can be easily stored and used in small quantities. There are various problems doing this with a computer like the :apple:watch.

I also dislike the fact that the :apple: watch only holds one day charge, as well as it seems to be the antithesis of a classcial timepiece.

Despite that I will probably still end up getting one.

I'm of the opposite opinion of the place. It might be because I post in the lower sections of the forums more often than not these days, but there are far more people I like than dislike around here. It's a pretty friendly place, so long as you stay away from the nuthouse brigades that nest up the iPhone/iPad and News forums.

Though with that said, the few people I've come to dislike on sight do make me wish I could reach through my screen so I could give them the vigorous beating they so desperately deserve.

Well, I remember the very first watch I had. It was given to me as a child by my Mom, after my first stay in hospital for an appendix operation. And - as an old style manual watch - it required daily winding, as many watches did at the time.

Pretty much why I stopped posting often here. People are annoying here.

Actually, in my experience, by and large, most people are pretty courteous and helpful, and the forums are well moderated.

Agreed.

I stay well away from the iPhone, and iPad forums, and from the more effervescently enthusiastic forums which exist solely to discuss specific Apple products.

My sense is that most of the rest of the forum is both interesting and welcoming.

I think it comes down to a perceptual flaw in our brains. We are wired to take strong notice of perceived threats. When you drive somewhere, you don't remember the 20 people who did the right things - used their signals, stayed to the right except to pass, etc. You don't remember considerate drivers. You remember the 10 people who were inconsiderate, dangerous, or otherwise negligent. Then you come home and say "everyone drives like an ***hole."

Same goes for online forums. Helpful, considerate, thoughtful people tend not to stand out - heck, they often don't even post unless they feel they have something to contribute. It's the knuckleheads, fanboys, and trolls you remember.

The lesson: don't trust your brain when you find yourself making emotional judgments about something. There is still a lot of good people on this forum if you weed through the noise.

Erm, the title was meant to be controversial really. It was meant to arose attention so that people would be moved to reply... not because I have some deep psychological need for attention. Assuming such things on a forums is a bit much, don't you think?
...
In essence, I created that title as 'clickbait'.

Wow, I don't think people understand what I meant... but then again, I don't even know why I posted this anyways...
Oh, forget it.

So you created a post to be controversial and as "clickbait" yet are surprised that you generated emotional and harsh feedback from the users here? Well there's your problem.

You're wrong! Absolutely wrong! I can't believe you'd say that, what kind of (insert favorite 'extremist' insult that the person you're hurling it at doesn't consider an insult here) are you!?

:D

No, your wrong. You should of listened to me in the first place and you could of seen the sense of what imma saying. You are yourself (insert favorite 'extremist' insult that the person you're hurling it at doesn't consider an insult here). I win this argument because I'm using more insults and less reason!

Oh, and the following:
  • How is the koolaid tasting?
  • Steve would roll over in his grave
  • Steve would never allow this
  • Cook is the new Sculley
  • Apple is doomed
  • Safari is snappier
  • Fix (insert bug here) first before developing new products

After naively agreeing with the OP and having it thrown back in my face I have come to a conclusion from further reading. They are determined to be offended by the Internet whether anybody agrees with them or not. Provocation mixed with surprise often results in meltdown. :)

I hate everyone.
What!? You hate me! Meeee!??? ;-)

@OP: Do you expect that 99.999 % of all members are compatible with your views!? If someone says you are dumb, use this

If I would write my comments like I speak in real life I'd be banned within 24 hours.

And that's why I've been put in time out so many times. I don't know how others seem to be able to articulate their thoughts without breaking any rules, but I need to learn. :p

Is this an American thing? Being aggressive and confrontational? There's online ********s worldwide, but they seem more clustered in the states. The whole "my right to swing my fist ends at your face" thing.

There was a facebook video, I can't be arsed to find it, about a guy in London stealing people's hats off their heads for fun. The worst he got was a glare as people ran after him and retrieved their hats. The comments were full of people saying in America he'd be punched or shot.

Wondering this myself.

OP, you have valid points, but they are marred by your own lack of reading when anyone comes to agreement of said complaint.

That, plus the anonymity afforded by the internet, and our monikers or noms-de-plume, which allow further cloaking, mean that many of the desk bound warriors who quiver with righteous rage while safely typing at a keyboard would not dare to do - or be able to behave - in such a manner were they actually to meet their online interlocutors face to face.

I don't hate most posters. TO be honest MOST posters are rather reasonable

It is unfortunate though that there is a group of them, who are absolutely brain dead mouthbreathing fanboys.

They consistently post factually incorrect statements. They consistently attack anything that doesn't fit their world narrative as fanboy or troll for "the compteition"

ANd there IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.

calling them out for what they are gets you a warning or a time out.

I've come to the realization that these fanboys as encouraged by this site. So while this site does provide some great people and some great industry news, often times I have to walk away for a while and ignore these morons who this site encourages.

Along these lines of thinking, here's what happened that truly shocked and surprised me.

Another person wrote a terrific post in response to the topic of the thread. It was so refreshing to see a very well thought out post, which also demonstrated excellent technical skills, that I wanted to both agree and compliment the author.

I thought being courteous and complimentary would be a nice contrast to some of the acerbic fights that occur.

So I quote that person and say "Well said, I agree"

The next day I log into the forum only to have a PM waiting for me. It was a warning from the mods saying I was being frivolous and that violated forum rules.

Can you imagine...it's against the rules to be nice!!!

Guess I learned my lesson on that one. ha... ha... ha... Oops there I go again, being in a good mood
