I came in this section because I'm wondering the same thing as the OP. I've never jailbroken a phone but was thinking about doing it to my 5 because I've seen some interesting things that can't be done on a non-jailbroken phone. But, I don't want any problems. I would like it to be as reliable as it is from the factory.

I've been into modifying cars for better performance and racing for years. Yes, it can be fun but there always ends up being some problem and reliability goes down. Don't want the same thing to happen to my phone.

Jailbreaking almost by definition makes your iDevice more unstable than it was out of the factory, just because all iDevices are locked down out of factory, so you can't make changes to the system files. Because system files are not user modifiable, that by definition makes unjailbroken devices more stable than jailbroken ones.

However, some jailbreak tweaks are really very stable, the ones that are made by established devs with lots of experience. When I jailbreak, I just install these trusted tweaks, and then don't tinker with the device for months at a time. Once I've picked and installed my tweaks, my devices run so stably I forget they are even jailbroken. However, it took some trial and error before I figured out which tweaks were stable, and I usually end up crashing and having to restore at least one device after each major jailbreak release before finding a stable configuration.

So I think jailbreaking is exactly like modding cars -- it can be lots of fun, but you end up spending lots of time on it to get things just right, and things tend to go wrong before you get there. Personally, for me, the end results are worth it, but your mileage may vary. You need to be willing to restore and start from a scratch if/when something goes wrong.

Ah, the internet. Where people forget how to be polite. There is no way on earth most people would walk up and tell someone in real life how ugly their phone looked, yet behind a keyboard it's a different story. To the OP, if you like your theme, ****** what anyone else thinks. ;)

Slightly off topic, but out of curiosity (especially since others have posted various tweaks they are using), which ones have you found to be stable and useful?

its tempting to go into the cydia store and elsewhere and begin downloading all the tweaks, add-ons and so forth that come your way.

but as others have said, the cydia store is also full of crap and dubious compatibility software with your phone.

the key is to reasearch what works, what is considered reputable software and download only the stuff you need to get what you want. the less the tweaks the better for ensuring a solid working phone.

Jailbreaking is worth it if you have patience, and are willing to research what tweaks/apps might be for you.
I always wanted a task manager (SBSettings) for iPhone, almost as soon as I got my first 3G, and I am a big believer in something truly being "yours" once you buy it. I love theming and I fell in love with BiteSMS long before iMessage was introduced.

To OP - this is an odd bug I see every now and again on my phone. A quick Respring is all you need, and it all goes away. Nothing to get worked up over, and almost certainly nothing to do with Winterboard or your "ugly" theme. I don't even know where this whole myth about WB being laggy came from. It had a short period on iOS 5 where it was a tad slow, but it was updated after a while and was as snappy as anything. It's smooth as silk on my 4S.

At the moment I have:
Activator
Bulltein
Clear Lockscreen iOS 5 (Winterboard theme)
FolderEnhancer
Forecast
Infinidock
MultiIconMover
NCSettings
NoNewsIsGoodNews
No Page Dots
Now Playing for Notification Center
QuickClear
SBSettings
SimpleDate for Notification Center (is not working properly on iPad, but works fine on iPhone)
WiCarrier
20 Second Lockscreen

There are a few Spotlight tweaks that I had on iOS 5 jailbreak that are currently not working on iOS 6. I also had WeatherIcon and Clockify under iOS 5, and if they are updated for iOS 6, I'd probably install them again.

I have been jailbreaking my iphones since i had the iphone 3 but I'm over it for the time being. The evasi0n JB is to buggy and there are to many unstable apps.
I installed a version of lockinfo that put stuffed the JB so I restored and went again and now the evasi0n 1.2 release totally stuffed my phone and I am now restoring again!!.

So i am going to leave it stock for now as it will be stable and may revisit the JB in a month or 2 when things have settled down.

Hell yeah is worth it from NCsettings, youtube+protube2= perfect yt, folderenchancer, XBMC, and a bunch of other tweaks.

I have never used Winterboard nor any themes, I find them all tacky or something I would have done w/ letters, movements and colors when I was in High School when I learned about PPT action sequences.

May I ask why you want to make a beautifully designed UI looks so hedious?
You don't need to jailbreak the iPhone for that, all you need is a Windows phone. ;)

Sure you can ask.
The answer is simple. I like it. However usually i just keep if for a few months, then i get rid of it. As beautiful as iOS UI is, I have to admit: I get bored looking at it all the time. I think having a few various themes implemented by Apple itself on iOS would not complicate or worsen the user experience.

By the way, i like Windows 8 mobile. Surely no where as good as iOS but it's different and looks nice IMO.

Ha ha, thanks. Exactly what i was thinking. It may come as a shock to some ppl that others may like something that they don't.

my iphone 5 once jailbroken has easily become 10x the phone it was as stock. stock iOS is just awful to use when you've experienced all the super useful cydia tweaks.

Hell yeah its worth it.
Im so happy now that my i5 is JB and I installed all my favorite tweaks.
I dont theme or use winterboard.
Just the packages that I need and use and that's around 10 things.
Runs solid with no probs and with much added functionality.
Thank you Evasi0n.

If it's not too much trouble could you list your tweaks?

Thanks in advance.

The main reason I Jb is to get rid off those stupid stock apps!! Also Love using BiteSMS

The only theme I've ever used and ever will use is Jaku. Love it. :]

I agree, look at that hideous winterboard theme. YUCK!

Agree, that's not particularly pretty but that doesn't mean they all are...

Something a bit more subtle like this perhaps...

----------

On my JB 4s I have:

Anyattach
Auxo
Accelerator
BytaFonts
Barrel
ColorKeyboard
CoverMeNot
Display Recorder
DisplayCandy
fsWipeCache
Homescreen Settings
iFile
iWidgets
Infinifolders
MultiiconMover
PreviewMaker
ProTube
SBSettings
Springtomize
WeeSearch Pro
Winterboard

Phone is stable. I get a day and a half battery life with moderate to light usage and I get to tweak and personalize it to my liking. For me anyway JB makes this device 15%-20% better to use than stock...

If you find something you like and need on Cydia then it's worth it. If not, then it's not.

The last iPhone I had jailbroken I had to JB because it was locked to a carrier I no longer wanted to use. The unlock part was too unstable, so I sold the iPhone and bought an Android. (Similarly, after I started buying the unadulterated Google phones instead of the locked Samsung-branded ones, I stopped feeling the need to root.)

I just JB-ed my iPad4, mainly because I wanted a different keyboard (hate the primitive keyboard iOS is stuck with). Unfortunately, I found that there is no decent keyboard available for iOS, even when jailbroken.

The rest of Cydia is kind of stale, IMO. Two years ago it seemed like a vibrant community (or maybe I just had not had the "Android experience"). Now there is virtually nothing that I have found of value.

The themes have not really advanced much in two years, there are no useful alternative keyboards, no "killer app" really.

It's strange to see people get so excited by stuff like Auxo, which is basically a rip off of the Android multitasking panel (but without the real multitasking). Or by a couple of "widgets." Really?!

Mind you, both my iPhone 5 and iPad 4 are unlocked, so that part of JB is irrelevant to me.

For me, it's really worth it to jailbreak. It does make your device run slower but only if you install tons of junk in it. On my iPhone 4S, for instance, the only Cydia tweak installed are BiteSMS, SBSettings, and Nitrous and I really didn't notice any lag or sluggishness. I also really never cared much for themes since I like the stock look anyways.

You guys have to stop hating on winterboard. I had it on my 4S and it ran perfectly smooth. I'll be getting the iPhone 5 soon and I'm assuming it'll be the same but I can't say just yet.

Can't wait to see you back on these boards again old friend! ;)

And yes, WB gets hated on way too much. I also NEVER had any issues with it when I had it on my 4S.

It's hardly strange. Why would iDevice users know, or even care, about what's available on an Android device?

For me Winterboard works without hitch on my ip5.

Running iboss ios theme.
