If you are wiling to do a clean install again, you'll be fine. I'm getting great performance of a clean install of 8.1 for 4 days now

What has your experience been with regards to battery life on 8.1 vs. on 7.1.2?

Unless you want to buy some big macs and fries with your phone, I'd stay put for a while.

In fact you can't use a 5/5s at McDs so no real point in changing, IMO.

The 5S will most likely be the 'free on contract' option when the 6S is released and then phase out completely when the '7' is out.

Thanks. Wonder if anything is improved the later model you get, or whether you're still getting the exact same insides as the very first 5S that came off production line. There was recall for 5S, well not recall but returns for the 5S last November/December for battery issues and that's when mine was sent from network. Only found out later on though.

I always wait a few months after a major OS release to decide whether or not to update my devices. I don't update if battery life is greatly affected. The battery life for all my Apple stuff is great, each device's battery lasts for a day or two of usage. I suggest running tests to see if "all the wonderful features and updates" are truly "wonderful updates" to the battery life you had before.

I think if your battery has always been a bit rubbish, it won't improve. Regardless of updates

Interesting;I wasn't aware of any such thing regarding early production battery issues. My wife has an October 2013 build 5S and I have a June 2014 build and I've not noticed any major difference between hers and mine with regards to battery life. I'll have to check her average usage time.

AFAIK, the battery recall/replacement was for the 5, not the 5S. (Link)

I had all the intentions of doing a full wipe and clean install however I couldn't be bothered if I'm honest! I chose to update and then see if there is any improvement which thankfully there is.

If battery starts to get worse I'll go with wipe and start fresh but shall see

Is it safe to update to 8.1 on the 5s?

Thanks but that's a completely different story and the recall date for the 5S was much later than the dates mentioned in that link. This replacement programme was for models made at the end of 2013 and the 5 wasn't even in production then.

On a late model 5S and a clean install of 8.1, I just had this for "time since last charge" before it died at 0%: Usage: 10hrs 17min; Standby: 16hrs 15min. That's for WiFi on, cell radio off.

Does a clean install basically mean all my settings and pics apps etc have to be put on manually afterwards, and it's setting up the phone as new? And is it a better way of doing things?

Im not happy with ios 8.1 on my iPhone 5s

Getting only 5 hours usage
Got about the same for the first few days, but now it manages to go through the whole day. Give it time.

No battery issue here either. I also have all background app refreshing off, bluetooth off, and wifi off while I'm at work. I guess it all depends on how you use it.

I'm wondering same thing. Sometimes my 5s gets good battery life like yesterday I had like 8 hours usage and 15 standby other days I get 6 hour and 16 standby. When I was on 7.1.2 battery was amazing

What was it like on iOS 7?
