Paying cash for things is a mistake. Not only are you not building credit for when you need it, you lose out on possible benefits of owning a credit card like rewards. Pay off the full balance of the card each statement and you won't owe the credit card company a dime. Also, your credit will be excellent after a few years. Get a card for gas/pharmacies/groceries that gives you discounts/rebates per mile driven and for purchases (I like Driver's Edge by Citi) and a card for restaurants/entertainment/books (mtvU is good in that department for points and also for good grades). I've bought iPods, guitar hero, and many gifts for people using the points I've gained. I also got over $300 in rebates I was able to put towards a used car.
