No.

For all those student computing needs, you will most likely need the abilities of a Mac Pro. Maybe 2 Cinema displays?

In all seriousness, NO.

get a MACBOOK. There is absolutely no reason you need a MacBook Pro.

My GF's brother entered his first year at university with a MBP and had some fool in his dorm spill a beer on it, resulting in $800 of repairs.

You could get the cheapest MacBook and still fare 10x better than your windows lugging counterparts.

SideNote. I got a MacBook 1.1 in 2006, and to this day it has never needed a checkup, never needed a reformat, never needed ANYTHING. And I do pretty serious SD Video editing on FCP, use the CS4 suite, ect.... It still flys.

So buy a MacBook. With the extra thousand bucks, get a sweet wallmount HD LCD to hook your macbook up to for watching movies and stuff. Thats what I use mine for.

I would really killl that guy!!

Back on topic;

Few weeks ago , i wanted a MBP aswell - I figured out , however, that I can get a MB for 300 euros less, with the exact same specs!

Some people just get the MBP for the 'PRO' in the name. Macbook is fine.

I just

I just feel that NO student (other than students pursuing creative degrees) will notice the "speed bump" between an already fast MB and a little-bit-faster-MBP.

They WILL however notice a big-ass monitor for when they are at their desk, or a few awesome apps, or beer for a few months :)

I have to agree with that though yes, but personally i think the best deal is the starter iMac.

get what you want

I'm basically a full time student, and all I need a laptop for is: Videos, Notes, Internet. I've used the Mac OS before and i really enjoy it over windows, but what else am I getting out of it besides the Luxury of having this gorgeous notebook? ** lets say money's not an issue.**
You obviously want one or you woudn't have aske that question. If you want it and can afford it, then its not stupid to get one. Just do it alreay and be happy.

lol, the best way to future proof is to save money and buy new machines

The MacBook Pro does have some handy features. Given that its made from alluminium, its very sturdy. So If the OP plans to carry his Mac around , then alluminium might be better than polycarbonate, and therefor Go MBP :D

I got the white macbook when I was in school about a year ago and absolutely adore it. No work on the computer/OS IT JUST WORKS! There is a minor regret..... that I didn't go for the Macbook pro. Like someone has said earlier it is probably one of the better if not best IT investments I've made yet. Go ahead and get it. If your school is one of those weird schools that is not compatible to Mac you can load Windows using bootcamp.

Because if you don't need a mac, I can find you a perfectly respectable Dell for $600, then you can spend $1200 on a 360, TV, and some beer. In college, that's probably money better spent.

That's a point against costly fashion statements in general. It's actually debatable whether fashion statements of any kind have inherently less worth (even from a utilitarian perspective) than other stuff, like an Xbox. I bet not every college student runs around with a $50 wrist watch either. If money is really not much of an issue and so the money won't be missed for more important expenditures, I personally think it's perfectly fine to buy a Mac for the only reason that it looks nicer.

MB;s are great and really last. If you worry about it, just buy Applecare.
I passed on this because I'll take the risk in years 2 and 3 and use the money
towards my next one.
