I personally wouldn't get an iPhone 5 right now, knowing that Sept. 10 is one month away and brings news of the new iPhone (though the release date will likely be two weeks later, maybe longer - we just don't know.) But the biggest thing that could annoy me isn't that the new iPhone will be faster, it's that Apple might increase the storage on the iPhones, so the base model is 32gb, then 64, and 128. I would be seriously annoyed if I paid, say, $399 4 weeks ago for the 64gb model and now Apple doubled that.

If storage doesn't actually change, well, then I guess it's kind of a toss-up. I don't *need* the fastest processor or the fingerprint sensor that's rumored to be included. Mainly I'd go for the 5S over the 5 at this point because it would have longer support for iOS updates. You're already down one year on the 5.

Also the phone is practically free because i have two lines (both of which are eligible for upgrade), so i was thinking of getting the iphone 5 or galaxy s4, and then sell it when the 5s comes out, and get the 5s at a subsidised rate with the other line

you go from dumb to dumber … save one of your upgrades and buy the 5 … just return it before your 30 day grace period is up … then buy the galaxy and keep for 30 days - and return … by then your 5s will be out and you can buy for keeps!

Yes, it's very, very stupid.

I'm not sure it's very, very stupid, but by the time August 2015 rolls around (when you'll be out of your 2-year contract), that iPhone 5 is going to be verrrry slowww.

Why? What will cause this?

Well, in absolute terms, the speed of the phone won't change, of course, but in relative terms, newer phones will be faster, making the older phone feel slow. Plus, there is always the possibility of newer, power-hungry software coming along that "slow down" the phone.

I am in the very similar situation. I currently have a work iPhone 5 that I will need to turn in due to job changes. My new workplace requires me to bring my own device and I would have love to wait with getting a new phone till the latest and greatest is released, but I will need a new smartphone in less than 2 weeks.
My plan is to get iPhone 4 (can be had for about $200) and use that till I get the latest iPhone. Since my daughter is still using iPhone 3GS, I am going to pass my iPhone 4 to her and hers 3GS will go on eBay – this will make everyone happy.
Like many others had said – I would be super upset to find out that my brand new iPhone 5 lost 100-200$ in value in about 1 month – knowing this, buying a used phone is much better investment since even if you were to resell in in 2-3 months, you will probably end up getting about the same amount.

The truth is that if you buy a 5 now you won't know until the 10th if it was stupid or not.

Personally I'd wait, for the many reasons others have mentioned.

I know I'd feel pretty stupid if I bought something only to find out a month later that the newer version was way better for the same money, or possibly (but unlikely) less money.

Resale will probably drop down to around 475-500 still not too shabby if you get it used. In that case you'll probably only lose around 50 bucks.

Not so stupid.....

if you need it right now. Besides, we dont know for sure if will be quality issues in the initial batches of new iPhones. Also availability, activation issues and so on....So for me, not so stupid. In any case, bad timing..........

:):apple:

cuz my ****** bb has some kind of data leakage, and it keeps going over the data limit. Also i have a voucher from my carrier that needs to be used by the end of the month.

Who is your carrier... all of these morons telling you to wait for the 5S seemed to have missed the part about having to use the voucher by the end of the month.

I've read several news that iPhone 5 is gonna be discontinued then replaced by iPhone 5C.

Then another news came up today saying that iPhone 5C is suppose to replace iPhone 4S.

Damm these rumors are killing me!

Time to simply wait for the truth when Apple officially announce any information

Even if the 5 gets replaced. All electronic supermarkets like BestBuy will still sell their stock of old 5's! And i could imagine a nice discount.

I dont think it is stupid, but just a little rash to not wait. But if you need the phone then get the phone.

This guy said it better than I could have!
