It's not how many pixels it's the pixel density.that matters.

The 2nd generation iPad has already been announced. It has a similar resolution to the old iPad but with the higher "retina display" pixel density. They changed the name though, due to popular request. No longer called an iPad.

My friends got them on release and I was addicted, but now I worry is it to late to buy them? Im getting my first "real" job this summer-I'm only 15- and I'm worried it will be updated and have a lower price point this September. What do you think? I really want it to have the new "Retina Display"

1) There will be no Retina Display in the iPad for some time yet. You'd need a resolution increase in excess of double what it currently has and there is no panel out there that'll do that in a 10" package at a low enough price. Nor is there a mobile GPU and/or CPU that can both drive it at a decent framerate and still give decent battery life. People really need to look at the technology behind the buzz words and understand what would be involved to scale upwards to other devices.

2) There will almost certainly be no update in September. Apple are still launching the iPad around the world and still have problems meeting demand. There's very little they could actually add and no reason to add it. The ONLY thing that may, just may, make sense is Facetime support but I really don't see them doing that so soon. It would also vastly overload the September / October window with new iPod's AND new iPad's whereas the iPad currently has a nice quarter all to itself in Apple's calendar if they keep it around March / April time.

id be willing to bet that there will be a refreshed iPad with all of the features apple plans on it having by october. When iOS4 comes out for iPad it will be with the new iPad...

I believe this because I think they released a stripped down iPad (no front facing camera or gyroscope) both because they did not want to show off features of the new iPhone and because the code for these was not ready. Now that the iPhone is coming out with it, I would bet the iPad will not be far behind and the release of iOS4 would be the perfect time to upgrade the iPad to its full specs as well...

They may have also wanted to get the iPad out in the spring to get tons of apps ready for the newer, more capable iPad, which will be their big holiday seller...

just some thoughts but it all makes sense to me... forget how apple has done things in the past... the company is changing...

March - ipad refresh
June - iphone refresh
September - ipod refresh

3 months between each.

I think that in general people who have already bought ipads will tell you that it won't be updated until next year. People who decided to wait will say before Christmas. I own one so I believe that it won't be until next year. I get the humour of that, so I'll tell you why I believe that it will be next year.

1, Unlike what Miles said most apple consumer products are on a yearly cycle. iPhone, iPod touch, iPod nano, iPod classic and most of the time the iPod shuffle. Vs the iMac, Mac mini, MacBook. In short if the word Mac is not in the title it is probably on a yearly cycle.

2, Everyone who says that it will be updated use the iPhone's launch as an example. However the only difference that apple made to the original iPhone was an increase in storage and a drop in price. Apart from storage the features of the phone did not change within the year. Adding the retina display or a camera is a bigger feature change than just adding storage.

In short I believe that an increase in storage for the iPad and a reduction in price, are unlikely but possible. But I would be very surprised if any other features were added to the iPad before March of next year.

Brendu and Ditzy - you both make a great argument for and against updates within the year, respectively.

Now... who to believe! How do you guys think resale value will hold up, should we buy now and want to sell prior to v2 coming out?

And updated battery, and OS, and apps. There's a lot that would go into increasing the iPad's resolution so much

Thats right , but isn't that what they always do anyway? Improve their products in a bunch of different ways. I really see a retina display coming to the iPad, just not now.

I am sure they will refresh them at some point. The new iPhone 4 has 512MB Ram, whereas the iPad only has 256MB. And they iPad is supposed to be a replacement for a "notebook". Why would Apple keep the iPad at 256MB RAM for 12 months, and let a phone be more powerful?
