I installed it from there
I think the video card is the problem because after every login it goes to a black screen
then I turn off and turn on the monitor and there is a picture again!
But then there might be a problem with something else because if the video card is faulty then the image won't come back even if I turn the monitor off and back on.
I'll wait for the video card cable to arrive and replace the 580x with the 6600xt

24w while asleep, lol - it does seem a little excessive on that count, I think the blower fan keeps running for the ram, and each PCI NVME blade adds about 4w sleeping.

FWIW I added two more 4TB Evo 990 Pros to my Highpoint card moved to an x16 slot (and moved the Afterburner to an x8 slot), and sleeping power draw is now 28w

For some reason the machine won't go to sleep mode!
The monitor goes dark but the USB ports do not lose power!
On Mac Pro 5.1, when the machine was in sleep mode, there was no power to the USB ports and the LED keyboard did not light up.
Today I moved the rx6600xt video card from the MacPro 5.1 to the 7.1 machine and the video card light won't turn off either!
No programs are running that would prevent sleep mode!
Can anyone give me some advice?

I just noticed the 7,1 prices on the used market have gotten really cheap now that there will be no more OS version updates (under $1,000 for a basic configuration). While it makes sense to get a 7,1 to use over an older Mac Pro like the 5,1 and 6,1, I don't think it makes sense to buy one now.

If you want a new Mac Pro I think the better idea is to wait for the M5 Mac Pro release and buy the M2 Ultra version if you can't afford the M5 one, since the prices on those should drop. Alternatively, buy a Studio. For Windows buy a separate Windows PC if you can't use it as a virtual machine on the AS Mac.

I love my 7,1. It's the best Mac I've ever had. I'll probably continue to use it until security updates end for Tahoe or if the 3rd party apps I use stop being supported before then.

I bought a basic 7.1 system and so far I have no complaints!
The only thing I don't understand is why it doesn't want to go into sleep mode?
I also realized that you can't bring up the boot menu with a wireless keyboard.
Even the pram reset doesn't work right now.
If MacOS support is no longer available, I'll start using Linux
I don't like the newer MacOS that much anyway
I'm currently running Sequoia on my machine, but I'm also thinking about reinstalling an older system
I don't like how MacOS is becoming more and more like iOS.

I am so jealous of people from US who had the opportunity to get M2 tower from Microcenter for the price of a studio. I wonder if they will considerably drop in price though. I wasn't into macs back then, did 3.1 drop in price on eBay and stuff when 4,1 came out?

I ran the diagnostic program and it found an error :(
This may be why sleep mode is not working properly!?

Well sleep on a 7,1 is different to sleep on a 5,1. For a start, the blower fan in the side which cools the ram keeps running during sleep. You can feel the air movement at the rear of the case to the right of the PCI slots. Your best bet would be to install ohanaware's Sleep Aid, and let it keep an eye on the sleep process for you. Also, get a watt meter and run it inline on the mac's power line only, so you can watch the power use when you sleep the machine.

And what about the PPF004 error message?

@keksikuningas "I wasn't into macs back then, did 3.1 drop in price on eBay and stuff when 4,1 came out?"

Yes. They were on sale new at less than £1300 in the UK after the 4.1 shipped.
But that was an inflexion point in Mac history.

The Mac Pro 3.1 was the last Mac Pro that Steve Jobs brought to the market, and he priced it to sell, $2700 for the lower spec 8 core.
Then Steve became ill, and T. Cook stood in (more or less permanently as it happened).
So Cook introduced the MP 4.1 Nehalem, debuting at >$3300 for the 8 core, to show Steve he had been undercharging? Haha. The price went up ever since...

That’s nothing, AUD$81K for a loaded up 7,1 is what we faced. $40K for 1.5TB RAM if i remember right.

One of mine was AUD$18K new, the other would have been AUD$43K new. At the time no other Apple machines offered those capabilities, still they don’t give you the ability to natively run windows or upgrade memory so easily.

The old 5,1 I purchased new was very costly too, as a fairly basic spec with upgraded GPU (Radeon 5870 with an awesome 1GB!) and the 27” LED Cinema Display that was AUD$6000 as well.

I don't let mine sleep. I think it turns off power to the other drives if you have any additional internal drives installed. So don't do it for sure when using Bootcamp since that should be on a SATA drive.

Thanks for the advice

I've seen this before and it can be a false alarm, normally caused by none MPX graphics cards such as the radeon 6000 series cards....download https://crystalidea.com/macs-fan-control and try the free version, you can turn up all fans to full speed to test them, as long as they are working you can ignore the error message.

I've since read on the forum that others have had this problem and false alarms!
When I put the MPX module back in, the diagnostics ran without errors.

thanks again for the helpful comment! :)

The base 4,1 debuted with a single 2.66 ghz quad core Intel Xeon 64 bit processor. With Hyperthreading the result was 4 physical cores + 4 virtual cores = 8 total.
Base configuration price point was $2,499.

The base 4,1 could be configured with two 2.26 ghz quad core Intel Xeon 64 bit processor. With Hyperthreading the result was 8 physical cores + 8 virtual cores = 16 total.
Base price point was $3,299. (I know I bought one new from the Apple Store in Palo Alto and the employees damaged the box “helping” me put it in my car).

The base 3,1 debuted with one 2.8 ghz quad core Intel processor. 4 physical cores = 4 total. No hyperthreading.
Base configuration price was $2,299.
This was technically a BTO.

There was also the “standard” 3,1 with two 2.8 ghz quad core Intel processor. 2 x 4 physical cores = 8 total. No hyperthreading.
Price point was $2,799.

So 8 cores was $300 cheaper with a 4,1.

I fail to see how that is “showing Steve he had undercharged.”

@minifridge1138
Hyperthreading isn't a 'core'. It's allowing two threads to run on a single core simultaneously.

Quoting you:
"...the “standard” 3,1 with two 2.8 ghz quad core Intel processor. Price point was $2,799."
"The base 4,1 ...with two 2.26 ghz quad core Intel Xeon 64 bit processor. Base price point was $3,299."
"So 8 cores was $300 cheaper with a 4,1."

No. It's not.
You might, however, have made a more meaningful comment that Intel presumably introduced a price increase to Apple when they introduced the hyperthreading Nehalem Xeons.

Why has this thread become a fault diagnostic help central?
Several people have asked questions before me that don't belong here...
I didn't want to open a new topic for this anyway
My question is still what is this error message?
I would like an answer to this
Thanks in advance for your helpful answers.

I sold my 7,1 earlier this year and got a M3 Studio Ultra instead. Whilst I still love the physical look of the 7,1 I don't miss its performance or the heat it generated. The Studio is essentially quiet even when pushed to the limit rendering whether on cpu or gpu plus has the benefit of hardware ray tracing. At best the Studio gets warm to the touch. The 7,1 with the 2x 6800XT Duo's got extremely hot and would heat up our office.

Just before I sold the 7,1 I put a Sonnet M2 4x4 NVME in it and achieved around 11,700 MB/s read speed etc. There isn't yet a TB5 NVME raid yet so I have a single TB5 enclosure. I thought this wouldn't be enough for speed but it totally is.

Like I said, I loved my 7,1 but it was a love/hate relationship. I wanted it to be something it probably never could be. Not having to look over my shoulder for software support and such has been a weight of my mind to as the software I used is frequently updated and the requirements always changing.

^^^^Sold mine a few months ago also. Replaced it with an M2 Ultra Mac Pro. I needed the internal expansion. As far as heat and power usage, the M2 ultra is far more frugal with energy use than my old Mac Pro was 👍
