My iPhone 4 has seen better days and I was wondering whether to buy an iPhone 5 now or to wait for the iPhone 5S

Always a bloody difficult question... I'm afraid the only answer is how bad do you need an upgrade right now.

Get it now and enjoy it during the summer. You can still get value for the 4. The 5S will just be a spec bump you won't even notice. If it has a fingerprint reader, it will probably be buggy for awhile. Go for the 5 now.

im in the same boat. I just became upgrade eligible and currently have 4S. My battery is awful and had to buy a mophie to keep me halfway through the day. I REALLY dont want to wait till late fall (why cant they just keep the releases in june!!?")...im torn if i should upgrade to 5 or wait it out for the 5S.

Wait for the iPhone 6. The 5s will have the same design as the 5, which is bad as its easily scratch able and chips away. The iPhone 6 might even have NFC capabilities.

I decided to take advantage of the offer I mentioned up thread. Will then sell it on depending what I think of it. I don't trust my 4 to last until September TBH.

Personally, I'd say no:

-From your post, I assume that the iPhone 4 is currently working well enough for your needs
-The iPhone 4S and 5 were minor upgrades
-The iPhone 5S is an inevitability within the next 6 months

If you believe that the 5S is going to be a big upgrade worth having, or that there is another handset that might tempt you, then hold out. If you don't believe that the 5S is going to be a decent upgrade but you really must upgrade now, then you might as well get the clock ticking on your next upgrade.

The chances are that your iPhone 4 meets your needs perfectly, so it may be a case of how much you want the shiny new trinket.

I've been out of contract since last summer, and have been tempted by the GS4 and HTC One, but manufacturer bloatware is somewhat of a turn-off for me. I may hold out for the next Nexus

I upgraded my wife and I to the 5 from the 4 on Tuesday. Her's had slowed down and battery life wasn't that great anymore, while mine slowed down and had a shattered screen (happened about a month ago). You've got at least a few months until it would be released and apple devices hold their value EXTREMELY well-I still see the iPhone 4 on craigslist for over $150.

The wife and I are very pleased with our upgrades. It runs so much smoother, we get LTE, better cameras, facetime over LTE/3G, etc.

For comparison, we upgraded to the iPhone 4 about 3 weeks before the 4S was released. Would it have been good to get those extra features? Yeah, but it's not like we were getting a basic phone and missing out on a bunch of stuff.

OP, you'll have to decide how patient you want to be and if you want to deal with a reselling the device, but you wouldn't be going wrong with getting the 5.

The 5 is an awesome phone, you'll have no regrets even with the 5s with its spec bump in the horizon. As was mentioned you can always do the resale thing. Its all good, go get your phone.

I personally would not. Sure, the iPhone 5 might still be considered a great phone but it IS about 8 months into the product life cycle by now. And given that the 5S (or whatever apple calls it) is destined to be optimized for iOS 7, what's another 4 months?

I myself have a 4S from launch day in Oct 2011 and AT&T said as of yesterday I qualified for a full upgrade. As much as I would like a larger screen and LTE, I am NOT going to run out and use my new upgrade on an 8 month old iPhone 5.

I am going to wait for the 5S since I am on the "S Cycle" anyway. Went from original iPhone, to a 3GS, then to a 4S.
I'm in the same boat, gonna just wait it out.

I need more storage anyway I am close to running out on my 4.
