is it worth it to buy $129 AppleCare+ when my iPhone 7 only cost me $49?

Yeah....tell that to my $1000 paperweight iPhone 6 plus that died after it's 1 year warranty because Apple sold me a defective and poorly designed product.

No 1 yr. extended CC warranty?

Did you use a credit card to purchase your phone? If so, you should check to see if it has extended warranty coverage (or accidental damage, theft, price protection, etc).

It could save you from having to purchase AC+ or carrier insurance.

Warranty doesn't cover accidental damage or theft. CC 90 day purchase protection insurance would.

The problem with Asurion is that they use non-OEM parts, and are not an Apple partner. I had to deny dozens of phones that people brought in, mostly whom had no idea that their phone was so poorly refurbished, and Apple does not honor the manufacturers warranty on these devices. Sad part is, many of them were still in Warranty, and would have had free repairs had they not been Asurion phones.
Yes... but Asurion themselves warranty the device for 1 year from the day you receive you replacement... so if you have a malfunction in that year... they themselves will replace it for free.

You'd be a fool not to get Apple Care on a phone you'll have for 2 years. After that one year mark you won't have a warranty and will have to pay out of pocket for a replacement phone should it stop working. And with Apple's track record since the iPhone 6, there's a good chance the 7 could have some sort of problem in its second year of ownership.

I had Asurion (rep talked me into it) and canceled after 6 months when I bought the 6s in 2015.

In the 11th month of ownership, dropped the phone (in case w/screen protector) on my living room carpet and a small spider crack in lower right appeared.

It's optional whether to buy AppleCare, Asurion or something else. Yes, depending on number of factors...it may be good idea or bad.

Certainly if you don't have a backup phone and if you rely on a phone, getting some sort of plan may be worth it.

In my case, canceling Asurion...no regrets.

As for the ip7 and supposed higher chances of something going wrong going into 2nd year...I don't see it.
/* shrug/

With another device made of questionable parts. I wish I had pictures of the insides of some of these phones. Extremely cheap displays, missing screws and shielding, loose camera modules, etc. I would not want an Asurion device in my hands, or anyone in my family.

Remember it's a $700 phone. That being said apple care is definitely a ripoff. Get asurion insurance through your carrier.

Honestly that's one of the stupidest things I've read. Asurion charges ~10$/month for insurance and a 200$ deductible if you break your phone.

I've made two claims and both times they sent be a brand new iPhone with box and all accessories unused

I've lost two phones. All told I paid $580 for them (deductibles and monthly charges) that's $1700 of phone value for $580

Does it make sense to buy $129 AppleCare+ ? That depends largely on how you use your phone, and how handy you are. If you can repaire your iphone by yourself or you have someone trusted by you to repaire it, you just do not need to buy applecare+; If not, you'd better buy one.
It also depends on your using habit. Did you often break the screen of your previous phone, or never? Did you ever drop your phones into the water? If you do not, you do not need to buy applecare+ But if you do, you'd better buy an applecare+.

This only goes so far.

I look after my stuff. I don't baby it, but I am cautious. None of that stops the lady I work with when she's in a frenetic frenzy, panicking and flipping out and not paying ANY attention to ANTHING or ANYONE. None of that can stop someone who is intent on damaging something either through willful intent or total inattention.

Of course it only goes so far, but my response was in the context of "you're a fool if you don't get it" which clearly isn't true for everyone.

You're gonna wish you did when you shatter your phone and have to pay over $300 to get a replacement one OOW. AC+ lasts for two years and you signed a two year contract. Perfect.

That is really great, I wish they did that for everyone. I can only speak on the city I live in (right outside Chicago), and the Asurion phones I have seen. (I would say over 100, in the two years I worked for Apple Retail)

Edit: If you lose phones that often, you are definitely making the right choice for yourself.

My frugal side tells me AppleCare is one of convenience and peace of mind only. When I run the cost of AppleCare plus deductibles, vs the cost of out-of-warranty repairs, it looks like a wash. In fact, by self-insuring, I get to keep the money if nothing happens. With AppleCare, Apple gets to keep the money.

My own Quicken history shows me well ahead of the house at this point by over $2000 not spent on AppleCare for my Apple purchases over the years. That'll pay for many refurbished phones outright or Apple OOW repairs. Add in some new car extended warranties, othe major appliance/electronic warranties... I could buy a car with the savings.

Perhaps a reason to buy any extended warranty is if you have a hard time maintaining a rainy day fund.
