I suppose we can debate his choices all day long, ultimately, it's his decision, I know what I would do though.
What I will say is that this type of mentality is case and point for why the entire world is in an economic meltdown.

HE said he can't keep it!!

He listed his only options as getting an iPad 2 or a cheap payg phone. I dont see "keep my iphone" listed as an option there do you? I simply advised him based on his own "only" options!

If you want to argue with anyone argue with the original poster, not me :p

What does the title say???

Help I can't keep my iPhone so instead I wanna buy an iPad for the same price?

If he can't keep an iPhone how can he afford to get a $500 android? Let's use some common sense here...

Sorry bud, but if you can't afford the monthly plan for an iPhone (you can get a plan with no data to still do texting/phone) witch is at most $35 a month, then you can't afford an iPad.

I guess you should sell your iPhone 4s, get a cheaper BB or android phone and buy an affordable plan. You don't need data and obviously you can't afford it either.

From what I've been told by AT&T, the data plan is mandatory. I can definitely afford $25 a month for the data plan for the iPad 2 however.

i can kind of see where your priorities are. Your mom won't pay the bill (and is willing to ding her credit) so you want to now get an iPad?? If you can't pay your cell phone bill obviously you must be struggling so to get an iPad is insane to me.

Sell the iPhone and keep money in your pocket for a rainy day.

I don't pay the bill. I pay part of it. She pays most.

Id sell the iPhone and use the money for the family. Just use a cheap off contract phone. Besides, in a years time the iPhone 5 will hit and you might be in a good position to buy one. Cheers.

PS: To sorta answer the question, If i had to be without my iPhone 4S or iPad 2...I'd keep the iPad 2.

Thank you for the PS. It was actually relevant :D

Now this argument is just fun. Look. I'm not buying another multi hundred dollar phone. That would require a cellular plan, the complete opposite of what I want to do.

As far as keeping/not keeping it, of course I can keep the phone. It would basically be reduced to an iPod Touch 4S (if such existed)

This has to be one of the most disheartening threads I've read in a long time. It is, however, rather emblematic of how this country got into the current economic mess.

How do you figure?

The op's family is apparently in dire financial straits, and he is thinking of whether to get an iPad? I would have sold it and used the money to help out, falling back on a basic plan for the cash savings.

Seriously, this doesn't strike you as a case of misplaced priorities?

I have heard tell of these things called "jobs" that people get to pay for the things they want that have ongoing month-to-month financial commitments.

Hilarious. I have one and it doesn't pay enough. Been trying to get a second one for a looonngg time. Now, care to make an actual contribution to the thread?

I think this is a fair comment! You expect your mother to work hard to fork out cash for you run around with an iPhone? If your mother is struggling to pay the bills (perhaps I'm being judgemental but) it seems a little selfish?

Why not just suck it up and get a cheap phone, and if you need an iDevice get a iPod Touch or something.

I don't understand why everyone must push themselves into that part of my life when they don't even know a sliver of the details of my life. I didn't come on here for some fools who don't know me to tell me how to live my life. All I came here for was answers. Apparently people around here are far too judgmental for that to happen.

No I don't expect her to. That's why I'm trying to do things on my own. Duh. I'D be the one paying for the iPad plan NOT her. The financial mess things seem to be in are of no concern to anyone but myself.

Then my answer is, 'none of the above.'

I side with those that say save your money, as you are a student and might need it for the future. Not having a cell while going to school is really difficult, so the best option I can recommend to you is Virgin Mobile. It's what I use. Get the LG Optimus V and the cheapest beyond talk plan (you get 300 min and unlimited 3G and messaging for $35/month). Use Callingmart.com to save a couple bucks a month with topup cards (promo code is ca3p-1207). This is also tax free so it'll be around $33/month.

As for the iPad, I'd wait until you get a better idea of where you will be financially in a few months. By then, the iPad 3 will be out and if you have thought it over for many nights and really feel like it'll make your life complete with one, you have the option to go with the newest iPad or even go for a cheaper iPad 2 (since right now you seem very content with the iPad 2). It's all about patience. It's hard, but you can do it!

And you got them, you just don’t want to hear them....so far the collective judgment is that selling your iphone you admit you can’t afford in order to buy an ipad as a half-assed, expensive cell phone replacement is bad idea...sell your iphone, get a cheap cell phone/plan and save or help out your family with the rest of your cash...if you still have the cash for an ipad in a few months, then reevaluate your need to buy one...

true that I can't afford it without selling my phone (or waiting till next month and using some of my excess school money. Only problem there is that I might be phoneless during the waiting period). But don't think I'm trying to impress anyone.

If you have excess school money, why don't you give it back to your mom who is probably giving it to you in the first place so she can pay her bills. Assuming thats who is giving it to you.

if you didn't make the comment how would we know the situation? Don't share info if you don't want others to comment on it.

Your title is a little misleading from what the issue is. Your thread doesn't say hey i really want an iPad 2 and i'm willing to sell my iPhone 4S to get it...is it worth it??

My mom won't pay my cell phone bill anymore so i won't have service. Since i'm mad she won't pay i might as well sell my iPhone and snag an iPad 2 instead.

Don't give so much information if you don't want people commenting.

I think it's a little ridiculous that your mom is willing to hurt her credit and stiff AT&T on the bill and then you turn around and want to get an iPad 2 with the funds from an iPhone 4S that still has an outstanding bill. Shows where your priority is.

Do what you want...but obviously you aren't old enough to be out on your own and pay for your own things. I can only imagine what that would be like with the priorities you have now.

Enjoy

None of my business how you want to spend your money so I won't go into all of that..

That said, I had to loan my own son my phone for a few days and I had to use my ipad when I was out.. I just pulled up skype and made skype calls.. which I pay 3 bucks a month for, so it lets me call any phone. I don't have a skype in number where people can call me but I guess you can get one.

So in a pinch, you can use an iPad with 3g to make calls if you have a good 3g signal in your area.. Not a phone replacement by any means but its useable.. you might want to look for one of the original ipads on Ebay that still has its unlimited plan intact..

Good luck!:p

No

I would wait right now until the iPad 3 comes out. Save ur money from now till then and you will have both.

Then why post a thread asking for input? Worth is always subjective, meaning that it depends on you (and your situation). If you know best based on your situation then you don't need to ask for input. If you want input then the context is very important in providing you a meaningful response.

Or are you just looking for support to make you feel better about buying an iPad when you seem to be in a dire financial situation where the money seems like it could be put to better use? All we have to go on is what you tell us and you've painted this picture based on your own posts. We can only speculate and I'd agree that buying an iPad in such a case seems like poor decision making based on misplaced priorities. Perhaps there are other circumstances to change how we perceive the situation but you haven't shared anything that would change the opinions of those that think it is a bad idea.

Ultimately, it's still your call, of course.

Thanks for not being a turd about things and contributing :)

It's not from her. It's from the school.

Thanks for the info. Although I figured the iPhone made its calls with its 3G too? And yeah, Skype was one of the things I had in mind to use. Much cheaper than cellular service. But good stuff to think about.

Last I checked, nobody knows when the new one is coming out. Unless it's out by Feb., I don't mind getting the 2.

if u cant afford a phone bill then maybe u should not waste ur money on a ipad

I don't make enough money monthly to afford the current phone bill. My mom pays the majority of it. I was going to use extra school money to pay for the iPad, and go with the data plan and something like Skype, thereby allowing me to pay less than I was before.

The post about the Virgin Media LG Optimus is very valid and I hope the OP seriously considers it, assuming it's available. An iPad can't replace a phone. Sell the 4S, give half the proceeds to your Mom to pay the ETF and pick up a cheaper phone for service *not* on AT&T or Verizon. Cheaper doesn't have to majorly suck if you do your research, heck I think TMo is going to sell the Nokia Lumia 700 for only $50 and that's a very decent albeit not top end phone. Best of luck.

Times are tough, and that means making sacrifices. Sell your iPhone, $600 is a decent price especially if you paid the cheaper subsidized price, and get a cheap phone. Talk to your carrier and see if they can migrate you to a different phone plan without paying the termination fee. Replacing an iPhone with an iPad is not a solution when money is tight.

i know its to late as he prob has bought the ipad by now but why couldnt he just have gone and got a pay as you go sim card for his 4s and left it at that? No commitments, just pay as you need the service???

Is that option not the same in the states?
