Is jailbreaking a 4S worth it, and is it easy to do?

Yes but thats not the procedure they follow when replacing a phone. What if I bought a phone from someone else who jailbroke and needed it serviced?

----------

1. Nothing, no they wont be deleted.
2. Nothing, all apps will still work.
3. No, the iPhone will communicate with iTunes the same way it did before the jailbreak.
4. Do you mean backup? Just don't delete it from icloud or locally on your computer.

Thanks. I'm gonna do it shortly. And yeah, that's what I mean. What about once I jailbreak. Do I somehow turn backups off to make sure it doesn't get over-ridden?

There's no need to turn backups off. It can still backup normally jailbroken.

Success! I'm now in the JB Club.

Welcome! Don't start another best Cydia apps thread lol just read the others.

I recommend:
  • Springtomize
  • Winterboard
  • barrel
  • bytafont
  • ifile
  • activator
  • mywi
  • my3g
  • ncsettings.
  • biteSMS

So after JBing my 4S I restored it back to factory. I messed around with it for a while and didn't see what the big deal was. I also just wanted to ensure that I could revert back without issue. Maybe I'll do some more research and try again.

You definitely didn't play around with it long enough lol. We told you you could revert back to stock without issue!

I know you said that but I had to be sure. I installed "something" after the JB that let me remove certain items from the status bar. Then I removed that install without restoring the items and couldn't get them back. I guess I freaked out a little and rushed to restore.

Yeah you definitely did lol

are there any apps that wont' drain battery life? Only thing I'm looking to do is get the wifi tether and a file manager app when jailbreaking, so those shouldn't affect battery life at all right? (of course USING the wifi will drain battery quickly)

So after jailbreaking I have found that I am very disappointed. Changing themes and all that is fine but not a big deal and I feel the new themes will be battery hogs. And I have trouble navigating the Cydia store. I really and more interested in expanding my phones functionality rather than changing the look. The only useful apps I found were NCSetting and Activate. I tried the SBSettings but did not like the colored large buttons, the NCSettings have a more iOS feel.

So any suggestions on useful utility apps? I have serached the forums but many of the suggestions do not have the definition with them , just the name. Thanks. Specifically I am looking for an app that will let me print documents from the "Pages" app directly to a printer when I plug in the USB cable, a free hotspot app would be nice, if it exists. Anything like that.

That's what Google is for.

Since when can you plug a USB cable into an iPhone? Synch cable = yes, USB cable = No.

Tetherme is mentioned at least weekly.

Perhaps jailbreaking is not for you.

Thanks for the purposeless reply. The 30 pin connector that plugs into your phone has a USB connector on the other end, does it not? I mean it says "USB" right on my computer and the printer at work so that seems to make sense to me. And Tetherme is mentioned weekly, I qualified it "Free". Tetherme cost money and "MyWi" cost a lot.

I match my replies to the thread purpose.

It's a synch cable and no, there's no way to plug a synch cable into your phone and the other end into a printer or into your PC and print directly.

There are no free hot spot apps.

With your latest reply, plus your self description in post 12, I no longer need the qualification in the last comment in my previous post, jailbreaking is clearly not for you.

Great, thanks buddy. I was able to email a word document to my friend this past weekend and he could print it by plugging his android phone into the printer without issue. I was hoping cydia provided a similar function.

I don't mean to highjack this thread but I am going to try jailbreaking my verizon iphone 4s using Absinthe 2.0.4 today. I have backed up my iphone using itunes. What is the correct procedure restoring to vanillia (no jailbreak files leftover) if I don't like the jailbreak? Do I clear all contents and then restore from backup? Or can I just restore from backup?

thanks

JB is so easy, even I can do it.

You can print from any app that has the ability to print to a printer that is hosted on a local computer so long as you are on the same network even if they are not airprint compatible printers. Just install printopia on the computer. You don't even need to jailbreak for this.

A FREE wifi hotspot app doesn't exist as far as I know, but there is mywi and pdanet. Mywi is $20, I'm not sure how much pdanet is, but there is a free trial for pdanet. Both require jailbreak.

NCSettings is a must for me and worth the jailbreak alone. My3G is something I am looking into buying.

I guess not any caveman can do it. I have tried Absinthe 2.0.4 three times with no luck. All 3 times Absinthe crashed. I did catch sometime about not being able to do a "lockdown"

At this time, can I try to use the pwnage tool that was released today without before doing a factory restore?

I would try again with absinthe. First, backup your iphone, then restore it as a NEW iphone. That way it will install 5.1.1 fresh and not install your old apps. Then jailbreak. See if that works for you. You will lose your saved data (like save games for your games, settings, notes etc) unless they are backed up by icloud.

You need to put more time into exploring and researching about what makes Jailbreaking so popular, because you clearly haven't.

Google is an excellent place to start (And I am not being sarcastic...Google "Top Jailbreak Apps" will yield exactly what you want).

Another good place to start is right on the Cydia Home page, under "Featured".

If you cannot, or feel uncomfortable, or scared when something stops working all of a sudden, then as the previous poster said, JB probably is not for you. Because truthfully JB takes some effort to maintain and keep up with updates and such. But the return is FAR greater than the work you need to put in.

Just as the title says, is it difficult to perform? Is it worth it?
Worth is always highly subjective, regardless of topic. If it was universally worth it then everyone would jailbreak. Looking at the real world that's obviously not the case. Read up in this subforum and see if there's anything that sounds useful to you. It's your call to make and first hand experience is your best bet for answering your question.

Go get Sparrow from the App Store, then install Sparrow+ from Cydia. Oh, and get BiteSMS from Cydia. Those 2 things are my main reasons for jailbreaking.

After a few days of using a higher functioning but glitchier phone I restored it back to factory settings. Jail breaking is not for me.
