Yes only because Apple does this purposely to create "hype" for their newest iPhone. They do this with every new color that's introduced to their flagship phone. Pure marketing.

However IMO Apple dropped the ball this time around because they could have put the squeeze on Samsung and their failed Note 7 release/recall by having more quantities and colors of the 7 and 7+ available on release day - potentially allowing those customers to jump ship.
Definitely not on purpose - that makes no sense at all from a business perspective. It's suggested every year when the most popular color is limited, but it just a case of actual supply/demand.

No way they could have known about the impending recall of Samsung phones. They have been making as many as possible since at least August.

Reactions: the future
I will be shocked
I have a friend that works at an Apple retail store and he said he was looking through the product reservation list for people coming in to upgrade on IUP and there were no reservations that list a 7 Plus Jet Black at his store.

Matches what I saw, no available appointments to be made for 7+ Jet Black. Plenty of others available, just not any of those.

Yep,it's like the Gold iPhone a few years ago. Shipping dates slipped almost instantly on Jet Black. I got my order in within 3 minutes of the store opening and got an October 3-10th date.
Same thing happened to me. Three minutes in and I have to wait for oct 4-10.

Apple likely constrained supply. Masters of the supply and demand game, they play the game to perfection. Creating the image of hard to get is their expertise.

The only place this makes any business sense is in your mind (and that of other trolls).

I've been reading a few of these threads, and the general consensus seems to be that there are no Jet Black iPhone 7 Plus available at launch, is this true? Has anyone seen any updates on their Jet Black orders? Specifically at Best Buy? This is my first time preording an iPhone, I ended up going to Best Buy with my confirmation at 3:20 AM CST for my 265GB JB Plus, and it says it should be delivered by Sep. 16. Are Best Buy's dates usually accurate?

#1. Its deliberate by Apple to create Hype low supply high demand and its more exclusive no 32GB option is available making it even more rare and high end.
#2. Apple fans always want to "flaunt" the newest Gadget and color (rose Gold is the most popular color ever for a reason people wanted to distinguish from the old 6). So Jet Black lets them Show Off their shinny Gadget.
#3. It takes at least 3 Extra Steps to make it. The Fancy dye, the Magnentic 3D polishing, and Much tighter Quality Control.

All lends to people wanting it more.

I will bet you will find no Jet Black units at an Apple Store much less at Best Buy.

From what I have read there will be few new phone if any for people just walking in a Apple store.

Hope your order goes through but Best Buy has ruined my day many times and I will no longer shop there.

Where I believe JB will be a hard catch early on, on launch day Apple stores generally receive a nice amount of stock, and carriers will probably receive a handful conservatively, this also depends on your location in the country or state. There are some places you will walk in and have your pick of the litter, some places all pluses will be gone in others all will be available. And in most cases I feel like only JB will be completely missing. They've had a full week of pre orders to better gauge demand so in two days we shall see how well they've supplied everyone. I think November was still a worst case scenario and honestly believe those who have such a late delivery might as well pop into the Apple Store and your carrier store in the meantime to try and grab one. And you may even not mind settling for a different color when you do search for your JB

I hate to say it, but I don't think you are going to have any luck at Best Buy. Their "pre-order" is no more than a reservation for whatever stock they get in. Best Buy doesn't know what sort of stock they will get in so they can't guarantee any of their "pre-order" dates. I went through this with the iPhone 5 pre-orders and they didn't get enough stock to fulfill their pre-orders. I ended up going to an AT&T store on launch day and walking out with the one I wanted at like 9:30am and then cancelling my Best Buy order.
Best Buy, Radio Shack, Target, etc. are at the low end of the priority list when it comes to getting stock on launch day. You'll have much better luck at Apple or a carrier store.

I'm setting up a area within my house with those rotating polishers and some dust that I found and I'm going to make me some money polishing up some matte black iPhone enclosures.

Apple ARE the masters of marketing, but I don't think that is the case here. It's not a "flagship" phone - well jet black isn't. The iPhone 7/7 Plus are, but that's in all their guises. The colour has no price or functionality difference.

Apple aren't stupid though - people liked the glossy finishes of the 3G / 3GS - and would have carried out market research to see that a decent enough portion of the market wanted the finish to add it to the 7 / 7 Plus. My guess is they've seen how it scratches with the materials in use on the new phones, and that's concerned them.

Especially as media reports now are all about negative reporting (click bait) to get clicks, to get advertising views/clicks. That's how the media makes money - and if they can add a negative connotation to for almost anything they will, and this is especially true where Apple's concerned.

So if they know people want this finish, but it's created scratch issues then there is a business case for restricting it, see how it goes, see if many people return it (which would have a business impact on Apple - the more units returned, the less profit made)... If it gets bad press and a bad reception, they can easily pull the jet blacks with minimum losses - replace the returned phones and hail it a win. If the market bears the downsides though, and demand continues, they're also in a winning position (giving people what they want, and making money from it).

I will buy this iPhone. Who cares if the iPhone has some scratches?! I will have it for...maybe one year...and then I will give it away. I do this every year with my old Apple iPhones and AW SS. My poor neighbor take my old stuff.

No one on here truly knows what Apple Stores will have. Even the Apple Employees that have been spoken with don't know what they'll get. I've yet to see an Apple employee say that stores won't have any JB for walk-ins. Most say they're hopeful or they assume they will.

I doubt that is true. I've worked retail for a awhile when I was younger and I can assuredly tell you that by now Apple allready has the iPhone 7 units in the back. They only tell you that they haven't arrived so that no body will get any ideas and come rob the units at night time.

Me and my wife did apple upgrade this time and she got jet black 128 verizon for friday, and when i did the same for 256, it already said oct 5. The jet black 256 is probably the most scarce model I've ever seen in an apple launch.

My personal theory with the jet black iPhone 7 scarcity is that Apple tacked it on later. Their marketing dept said you need to do something special to get people talking, and they added Jet Black later than the rest, so there are less of them. Just a theory though.

Lucky we got one jet black for Friday i guess, I had to switch to matte black i7+ 256gb.

Definitely a reasonable take. I guess Apple is always in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation when it comes to preorders. It's just a little disappointing when everyone else who ordered within the first 10 mins got a Sept 16 date while we get one 1-2 weeks away (or longer), even though we ordered at the same time. Seeing as supposedly none of us got a 16th date, it gives the impression (to some) that we got shafted, just for choosing Jet Black.

Oh well we'll have to see how it develops. Friday will be here soon enough, and hopefully a phone will be arriving on my doorstep! ;)

Between here and Reddit, I have yet to see anyone coming close to a Launch Day Jet Black 7+. I would have suspected that if any of the people who ordered jet black to have seen something by now if they were getting it on the 16th. (Support Profile Entry, UPS Reference Tracking, etc.) However, there is still tomorrow for some of that to propagate though...

It does... Strangely, the Jet Black 7 had some launch day availability right at ordering, but it went quick. The 7+ on the other hand, forget it. I think the first group that was quoted to ship was the 9/26-10/3
