I may be selling mine below in my signature. Its about as fast as you can get in the Classic. Im after the TB 2 ports with 2 ports more than anything.

I have 2 SSD drives loaded in the classic one to run the OS and Apps the Samsung 840 Pro and the second in the optical drive a Samsung 840 500gb. I have the second drive partitioned in two with a backup OS and than storage which I put all my images on when traveling plus my music is on this drive as well to keep the OS drive freed up more. Pushing data between the two drives is extremely fast

Yeah if I got the now last gen cMBP I'd end up putting two SSDs into it and removing the optical drive. Plus I can get 16GB of Ram down the road if I needed it. But people have said Mavericks uses Ram very well. Going with the cMBP with hi-res screen would save me some money that's all. The rMBPs are amazing but I can't justify the price.

Price is killing me wanting to upgrade. Im looking at north of 3200 OUCH.

The classic is nice to have if you like upgrading things , the retina leaves you zero choices. That does bug me some. Im afraid this is the end of the road for the classic.

True. Hence why I want to get one of the last cMBPs. It's gonna be the Mac that lasts me a very long time. Maybe once prices come down for the retina version (or whatever it will be at that time) then I'd get one of those.

A 1TB SSD in the 13-inch should be equally as fast, right? Would that make a difference?

Nice to see some actual benchmarks. Now we need 512, 256 and 128.
