Would Apple have sold more iPhone 5's than 5c's if they just kept the 5 at $99? I doubt it - those that wanted the 5 bought one. With the 5c being the "new" iPhone and having color options gives it more appeal than the year old phone in black or white.

But you could have said that about the last two launches. In fact, Apple said that it's older models were selling better with the price reduction than in their first year of release. The 5 at $99 might have had similar results. We'll find out soon enough.

No, I think MacDawgs point is people complain when there not enough phones and now we see a thread complaining that supply is ample. Basically apple doesn't get a break.

I think the 5C is a tough sell and won't generate a lot of sales like the 5S but there is a market for them - how much of a market is up in the air at the moment.

I'd say actually the 5C will sell quite well and could possibly outsell the 5S....

Reason why preorders haven't gone nuts is because the type of person itching to preorder and get on launch day generally will go for "top of the line".

Whereas the 5C will be more of a "Ehh I need a new phone. Oh look the 5C! Pretty colors and its cheaper!"

Good luck guessing everyone. But not one of us here has nearly enough information to determine anything. All we do know is the 5c is FAR easier to manufacture in large numbers than any previous launch phone Apple has ever made. Because, last year's tech. But even that doesn't tell us for sure if they met their sales expectations. We will only know when they tell us.

I don't think you get it - the 5c is the iPhone 5 in a new case. Apple is doing the exact same thing it has been doing for the past 3 years, selling last years iPhone for $100 less.
The only difference is now they have a larger margin (for the plastic case) and people view it as something new, rather than just last years iPhone.

No. It's you, who does not get it.
This "only difference" of repacking last years phone into this horrible... thing - and offering it as something wonderful and new - does destroy the brand Apple. It is a difference of huge dimension: It brought the smell of cheating! Ive's video was the most horrible thing, which did happen to Apple since Job's death. Ive was the last charismatic person, they did have. Now, the flair of hypocrisy became part of his trademark.
The only excuse for all this would have been an attempt to conquer a huge new mass of buyers in Asia. But his option became destroyed by the price point too high.

Since when does Apple go for this group of customers?

Again - how quickly did the 4S sell out this time last year? That's the comparison here.
Bingo.

The iPhone 5c will not sell out during launch, but will probably sell more than the iPhone 5s over the next year.

The 5S reservation lit up today in China... and well they're no longer available for launch day pick up due to demand.

Sorry but this is just nuts. I don't idolise Jobs or Ive, but Ive's 5C video was perfectly fine; he was quite transparent about the fact that it was "distillation" of the iPhone 5 and not new technology, went into great detail about the plastic and new housing design etc - of course the views he expressed about what you call "this horrible thing" don't quite agree with yours but hey, he designed it, and guess what, some people like it because it turns out that tastes vary, get used to that before you give yourself an aneurism.

Since when does Apple go for this group of customers?

Since always. You may have missed this from your aluminium and glass tower, but the older phones have always sold well to the masses once the price drops.

As it has routinely after every new product release. Why? Because the analysts pumping up the prices before the announcements ALWAYS get their predictions wrong, and then cover their backs by claiming that Apple got it wrong rather than them. And then Apple post record sales and everything goes back to normal.

NOT that the 5C was ever, ever expected to do record anything - it's just a solid backup to the 5S, nothing more and nothing less.

but Ive's 5C video was perfectly fine

Was it really?

Taken the whole product aside I had a closer look at Ive himself.
I had the impression that Ive looked pretty much burned out. His eyes were glassy and tired and his speech sounded very scripted. The excitement and enthusiasm was completely gone. Where he placed emphasis in sentences it seemed as this was the 100th take of this video and Ive just wanted to get it done. Maybe the pressure of shareholders and complaints about Apples lack of innovation really got to him - would be only human.

Anyway, just saying maybe it would have been better if Ive had taken the weekend off before recording this clip.

Since when does Apple go for the low-end market like you are suggesting they should do?

Outcome is already visible. Stockmarket made a big dive.
I am sure you will see a recovery once they announce sales stats. They are only withholding because they don't want competitors to know the actual breakdown between 5s/5c.

Okay. Then it must be the low-end user.

This is it! They are just witholding.
