The MBPr screen is definitely not a viable substitute for an antiglare screen, IMO. To me, the MBPr is just as glossy/glassy/reflective/annoying as all the other mirrors that Apple uses for screens. The lack of an antiglare screen option is one of the reasons I won't buy an iMac or ACD or MBPr. If they stop offering antiglare completely, I'll be forced to find an antiglare film, because the glossy screen is unusable for me.

I haven't seen an anti-glare film that really works though have you?

No, which is why I'm hoping Apple keeps antiglare as an option on the MBPs.

That's the problem really, it's tricky.

Buy matte 15 now (or even refurb 17 while they last) or wait for iMac to see if it addresses the issue and run the risk of matte MBP being killed off and being left hight and dry....

Very real possibility imo.

I'd be very surprised if Apple introduces an iMac with an antiglare screen. It's not impossible, but I think it's highly unlikely. If antiglare is a priority, I'd buy the 15" antiglare MBP now, before it's gone, too.

I agree that the color rendition is slightly less contrasty on a anti-glare screen, but far more comfortable to look at for 8-10 hours a day. Apple needs more ant-glare options. The rMBP is a better glossy, but still not an antiglare.

Yeah, is a real pain for the eyes...I heard - not sure if it's true - that Germany banned glossies in the workplace.
