i just received my 6th iPad Pro replacement, took it home, only to find this one has a major hardware defect as well. To list them in order I've had:
- home button getting stuck
- dead pixels
- air bubble in glass
- 1/3rd of the glass was extremely coarse (enough to make the pencil screech when dragged against it)
- the edge of the screen near the home button would not register swipe input
- dead pixels
- the lower half of the screen clicks when touched, pressing against it makes air "whoosh" out of the iPad (this is the one I just brought home)

Am I the unluckiest SOB, or is something weird going on with the quality of the pros?

I think the air woosh is with them all, if you press down firm on the display quickly with two thumbs on the right and left half of the display, this happened with both units I've had. The first unit I got had an annoying clicking sound on the left thick edge, it pushed in slightly and made a clicking sound as if the glue that holds the glass on had come loose. There was also a small bit of dust in one corner. I replaced it and the new one was perfect, no loose, clicking bezel and no dust. I also noticed when comparing them the second one had a much whiter white, while the early model was very yellow with whites.

I've had two replacement Pro's. First one had a very poor fit between the display and body. So bad that the store manager offered an apology and immediately got a new one out.

That one lasted just a week before the speaker failed.

A frequent high volume buyer of Apple products, I've become accustomed to the decline in Apple's quality over the last few years.

You would think a high volume buyer would know every Apple product from the beginning has had quality production issues. I doubt the absolute quality percentages have gotten larger though since production has grown it may seem so by reading Internet forums. Which are such a ridiculously small sample compared to total sales. When I read any thread in any forum about multiple returns, I just take them with a grain of salt because it is the Internet. I'm not saying people don't have legitimate issues but 7 or 8 times, perhaps it's not the product for you.

Not everyone that has problems with an Apple product posts on internet forums. This must also be kept in mind. Same goes for any product really.

Based on my own experiences, I would agree that Apple's quality control HAS slipped over the years.

Play the lottery, like now.

I have been very fortunate with my Apple devices, and have purchased phones, desktops, iPads and a MacBook Pro.
In my opinion, if I had to return a product more than twice then that would be it...I wouldn't purchase the third time around, it would be a refund. That goes for any product, even my loved Apple lines.

Just to give an update - I was lucky enough that for the 7th replacement (the one with the loose bottom half of the screen) the Apple Store decided to break the chain of warranty replacements and gave me a brand new iPad (with a new warranty). Granted, the iPad turned out to be a dud, but the fact it was a new "purchase" let me just exchange it for another new iPad the day after, and as far as I can tell after 2 days, this one seems to be defect free (knock on wood).

Glad you finally got a good one. :) I am glad that mine was great on the first try. (Knock on wood also!!!!)

I have had two iPad pros now. But neither had defects. I returned the first one because I thought I didn't like the size of it and exchanged it for a iPad Air 2.

After having the iPad Air 2 for a bit I realized I made a mistake and bought a 128 cellular iPad pro. Couldn't be happier. And the build quality on all three of them as well as my iPhone's and iMac is perfect.

I know some people genuinely get defective products as there will always be defects in everything but for some to have so many issues such as 5 or 6 in a row is crazy to me.

I just had to reset mine and reload as it started to go wanky: safari top bar would go grey, contacts wouldn't stay open, web pages wouldn't finish loading, and some other bizarre behaviors. So far today it has been great. We have 2 ipps and one air 2. We've had 5 other iPads in the past with never a problem.

This is my 3rd Pro, first had a chip on the inside edge of the bezel, second was cosmetically perfect but had a dark corner top right in portrait and horrible backlight bleed, both had loose power buttons and were December build. This one has a perfect screen, the volume buttons are both slightly loose but other than that it's perfect. Just grateful I got a decent screen. Love using this thing.

More than anything I'd say you've been severely unlucky to get so many issues.

Don't sweat the air whooshing thing though, well unless it's so bad it's blowing the curtains around :D

Air being pushed from a tablet isn't new, or exclusive to iPads for that matter, there's a lot of air in there and the bigger the tablet gets, the more noticeable it becomes.

You'll even find this on an iPad mini to a much lesser degree, but put it up to your lip and give it a good press and you'll feel air coming out at the Lightning port. It's just a natural displacement.
When you push the screen inwards you are ever so slightly changing the volume of the device, which in turn puts the air in the device under pressure. It will just naturally find the point of least resistance to escape from. The bigger the tablet, the larger the volume of air escaping will be. And in an iPad the point of least resistance is generally the Lightning port.

Don't get me wrong, in a normal environment you shouldn't really hear it, I don't hear it on my iPad Pro unless I hold it right up to my ear.

Your last sentence is exactly the problem - my iPad Pro whooshed during normal usage (i.e. lying on a test with me writing on it). I've since had it replaced and the replacement has been rock solid for a week now. I did compare the two side by side and you could easily tell the difference in how easily the glass on the whooshing iPad would bend at the touch, compared to the other one. It was almost as if there was a support missing behind the glass (or the glass/screen was much thinner, which is impossible).

I do realise why the whooshing was happening and you obviously can't change physics, but a light press on the screen should not deform the device (fast) enough for the effect to be audible. An interesting observation was that with the lightning cable in the port, the issue went away (and the screen didn't give in anymore), which made me think a seal was missing/loose, causing all of the issues.
