I have the same issue in one photography forum. I was told it's THEIR issue with they way they have something configured in their software (it/ a huge forum). I have no problems here nor do I with other forums. However, the one that is terribly laggy makes me want to not post. Maybe a good thing LOL

To be 100% honest.

I was on my iPad last night, and I was typing a post to this forum.

I had quite terrible keyboard stickyness/delays in typing in.

Sometimes, I typed say 3 or 4 character and nothing happened, not even any click sound, and then all 3 or 4 characters appeared on screen at once.

I was only 1 or 2 finger typing as well, so not very quick. Perhaps there is some video/advert on these forums that's slowing down the keyboard input?

1st time I'd experienced it, and to be honest, if I was a fast typer it would of been unusable.

But you have to ask yourself if the iPad is really the correct device for you?

Wouldn't a MacBook Air be of more value, considering you need the dedicated keyboard to type?

Just playing the Devil's advocate.

Yea, I will be investing in a MacBook Air, either this generation's or next. However, this was not the intended use for my iPad, it was originally to surf the Internet, watch movies, and listen to music.

I just happen to have an awful gaming PC that likes to crash very often. So I decided to get the keyboard dock and write my articles on there, to prevent the loss of my data if a crash were to happen. So far it has worked very well, I still have to use my PC for uploading pictures and all of that jazz, but it works better than my PC for typing up articles and papers.

I am very interested in the MacBook Air for sure, and I kind of figured I would use my iPad less maybe, but I am not entirely sure. I need to fix my PC right now before I dive into other expensive items. :p

I may just try to get an iMac after seeing how well my iPad works as a portable writing station.

I have seen several youtube videos of drawing applications where there seems to be "line lag" where the pen is moved real quick and it takes a few seconds for the line to appear on screen. now i dont know if thats the way it really is or if it just looks that way through you tube. I hope this line lag is not an issue because i am specifically buying an ipad over an le1700 laptop to draw with.

Yes, depending on the application and the thickness of the brush, there may be line lag. If you don't swipe super fast, you will be fine though.

Indeed, whilst the on screen keyboard is great (if you have nothing else to use) you can't beat a real physical keyboard.

What we need really is a physical keyboard attached via a hinge or something :D

Zagg case. Advertised here on MacRumors. I don't own one (yet), but I have played with one my local non-Apple Apple Store.

Why do Americans say "I could care less"? I've seen it on loads of threads on here.

It makes no sense - surely it should be "I couldn't care less" which is the correct English phrase... It implies you care so little about something you cannot care any less about it.

You're right.

I believe it happens because it's an old expression, that was written incorrectly to begin with.

A word I see very frequently that is grossly incorrect is "prolly". Where that one came from I don't have the slightest idea.

Slow? No. I know a lot of people want instantaneous, but I have never thought of my iPad as slow, compared to my MBP, which is pretty fast, and my PC which is, well, you know.

I was wondering the same thing....add a key board and it would be a netbook!!

Both sayings are correct though, just they are usually used the wrong way ;)

Nope, sorry lol ONE saying is grammatically correct, "English" English or "American" English - couldn't care less is the only way for it to make sense in the English Language. Secondly, "they" aren't usually used the wrong way, ONE way most definatley is, every time... ;)

Again...........

Hopefully this explains this for those people who don't understand why they are using the phrase wrong.

Just watch this video and you will understand :)

Haha! Brilliant!

Never really thought of my iPad being too slow TBH - its pretty instantaneous for me.....

I wouldn't call my iPad slow at all. If you are trying to load a website with a ton of content it may take a few extra seconds, but that's about it.

I've always interpreted it as. "While I could care less, I don't care enough about it to do so."

I'm afraid you're completely wrong.
(1) it's completely grammatical (you've mistaken 'grammar' for 'semantics')
(2) it makes perfect sense, since those who use and hear it understand the meaning
(3) it's idiomatic, so parsing it the way you do is simply pedantry

Here's some professional linguists (i.e. people who are paid to study language and are experts on it) who might help you think about the issue.

On the original OP's question about the iPad being slow.

Really, I think most of us are thinking about this the wrong way round.

In the same way most people seem to think to themselves:

"Isn't it lucky that the world as we know it, is just right to support human life."

No, hold on.................. You have got it back to front there.

The world was created and was a known item, and THEN afterwards animals/man evolved to fit the planet. If the planet was a bit different then we would be a bit different.

Going back to the iPad.

If you are given a computing device. You write software/code that runs at an acceptable speed on THAT computing device.

Like the planet, it was not as if there was lots of code lying around already written and the iPad grew to run it.

No, the machine came 1st.

The Commodore 64 was not slow for the software that was written for it.
The Amiga was not slow for the software that was written for it.
The Xbox360 and PS3 are not slow for their games either.
But then, neither was the Nintendo NES or Sega Master system slow either.

So, it's rather a moot question.

If is the iPad slow?

Wll, in the most part no, it's very quick, or more correctly it runs the code that was specifically written for it to handle, well.

In the next sentence you could say the iPad is incredibly slow if you tried to get it to run software not meant for it to run.

Even my Casio Calulator is quick running the software that was written for it, but I don't think my Casio processor would handle Crysis very well.

Apps wise we've not really seen anything weighty yet.
Photo editing software with any decent filters.
3D modelling programs, with rendering.
Proper CAD programs.

The only real time the iPad will look slow, is where there are new faster versions out. Let's say iPad3 or 4, and software is written for the new model, and you then try running it on our current model, then the iPad will be very slow.

If I dare go back on topic...

The iPad is faster than the iPhone 4. If it slows, it is likely due to software being less streamlined. As a whole, the iPad works as well as advertised.
Actually, while the CPU is believed to be faster in the iPad, the GPU seems to be slower per pixel — though that's likely just because the iPad has almost 30% more pixels than the iPhone 4 and whatever clock speed difference exists between the iPhone 4 and the iPad is likely to be less than that.

Per pixel speed is probably the most interesting one for the GPU because it's a fully programmable part and most of the very interesting effects rely on writing pixel shaders (ie, tiny little programs that operate once per pixel drawn).

That all being said, I find my iPad to be quite zippy. It matches my iPhone 4 in user experience on the same version of the OS, and therefore exceeds the current subjective performance of the 3G, the original iPhone and the corresponding iPod Touch models.

I have to say though, I had no problems with the iPad speed before, but now that I've upgraded to iOS 4.2, I do notice it lagging sometimes.

The question of "speed" can be simply boiled down to: is it responsive enough? That is, when I press a button, does something happen right away? When I flick at an icon, does something happen right away? If there's even a split-second delay, we notice it. If that delay is consistent, then we start to complain that the device is "too slow".

The "something happens" doesn't even need to be the thing I really wanted to get done. I could push a button that asks the iPad to apply a filter to an image. Do I expect it to happen instantly? Of course not. But I DO expect that the button responds instantly, that I get some kind of "yes, I heard you" command feedback from the app instantly, and then ideally a progress bar or some indication of what it's actually doing. I don't care if the filter takes 2 seconds or 10 seconds. What I do care is that it responded instantly to my command.

That's where a LOT of devices get it wrong.

It's stupid to buy Apple products at the end of the generation.

If you wanted this iPad, you should have bought it in March.

Now that you waited this long, wait two more months and get the far superior iPad 2.

Trust me, if you get impatient now and buy the iPad 1, you're going to be kicking yourself in Feb.

I've also noticed that my ipad seems slower with iOS 4.2, as well as my iphone. Not sure why

your fighting a losing battle mate, they never seem to get it.

oh well i suppose we can always laugh:D

He simply implies that he cares, even just slightly, but that he could care less than he currently does.

I know, he is most likely using it the wrong way, as couldn't care less means you simply do not care about it at all.

Both sayings are correct though, just they are usually used the wrong way ;)

He's right, it's a common misnomer. One thing you'll find about Americans... not many of us can talk :/

It's just a bad habit! haha.

iPad is great. Especially with 4.2 The only issue I ever had with my iPad was the browser reloading websites everytime you exited out. It no longer does that thanks to 4.2!!!

Also, sometimes my book covers take a while to load but thats because I have over 650 books on there i'm sure.
