Two things, the ipad 3 has had various issues and people have reported a lot of glitches. number two I wouldnt buy any apple products without the lightning connector just my two cents.

I bought my Mother an iPad 3 when it came out. Let me tell, do not buy it! if you must get an older device, the iPad 2 runs iOS 7 smoother that the 3. It's not as pretty, but the iPad 3 was truly underpowered.

I have the iPad 3 and iPhone 5, the difference in speed and ability to do things is quite noticeable. Even with simple things like App updates.

I would either spring for an iPad 4 or wait until new ones are released.

Opinions opinions...:D

I jumped on the iPad 3 bandwagon from launch and i can quite happily say its still awesome today as it was last year.

No extreme heat issues, no noticeable graphical hitches and i game A LOT. For example Im talking Asphalt 8, Sfxt, Dark Knight, RR3, Riptide2, Badland, Joe Danger all the big arcade titles.

At the end of the day, i agree with what someone said earlier, if you are someone who bought the 3 at launch and still use it to this day, you've got your moneys worth, i know i sure did.

But you are going to hear from some people who maybe bought it later in the cycle and are understandably a little disgruntled by the quick release of the 4 or theres those that were able to sell their 3 for the 4 but most probably took a hit to the pocket and so go out their way to put down the 3 to justify their purchase of the iPad 4.:p

To the op, we're so close to a release of the ipad5 so if I were you i'd wait to either scoop up an iPad4 on the cheap or get the 5.

Me, ive thoroughly enjoyed using my jb iPad 3 over the last year and a bit so I'm ready for iPad5:cool:

I bought iPad 3 at launch.

At the time, I came from an original iPad, so its performance was actually quite solid. Apple probably released it too soon because the performance wasn't really improved over iPad 2, it was mainly bit better graphics to cope with retina.

The screen and the performance at time time, was a game changer.

Sadly, the iPad 4 came before too long, but too soon for most of us to upgrade, and the iPad 4 is more future proof.

Honestly, using my 3, it's still beautiful and nice to use. I wish I had known to wait for iPad 4 as it would have been useful so much longer.

The iPad 4 is a much better buy, but I say wait. Maybe you would be drawn in by iPad 5, or benefit from better pricing on iPad 4 at that time.

What do you plan to use the iPad for? If it's basic internet, email, facebook, videos; the iPad 3 will do for a couple of years. I have an iPad 3 serving that very purpose on my bedside - only that it is still on iOS 5.1. It works as well as it did on the day I purchased it. Since it performs all the functions I expect of it, I have no plans to upgrade to newer OS's which will slow it down.

Exactly. Oh make no mistake about it there are TONS of folks out there that would want it to save on money and for the reasons you listed this iPad would be fine another couple years. If I had not won some extra cash at the casino last week I would have been perfectly fine keeping my 3rd gen and not even look at getting a new one.

Is the iPad 3 a good buy for the long run. How many iOS updates will it approx get ?

Yes and no. It will likely work fine for most folks and manage at least one more iOS update.

But frankly at this point if you are looking to buy something you are probably better off waiting. The announcement and even perhaps release are likely in the next 4 weeks and the newer hardware will be the best buy in terms of 'future proofing'
