Nobody (in US) buys iPhones for $599. You can buy it (with a contracts) for $200. That's the price. You can not do the same with iPad.

People DO and DID pay $599 for an iPhone. Many more are buying it at the lower, contract subsidized price, but the fact is that Apple could probably still sell boatloads without subsidizing it. Subsidizing it just allows it to reach that many more people.

I don't see what the hangup on specs is. Apple is getting a lot of praise from the iPad for its speed. My iPad plays h.264 video better than my dual-core desktop with 4 gigs of ram. Scrubbing, fast-forwarding, rewinding... it handles it better.

If Apple adds multi-taksing to the iPad and it still performs half as well as it does now, then I can officially say "I don't care about specs".

I was interested in this so I did a little test. I don't have an ipad yet :(
However, on my iphone 3GS,

I opened 8 tabs in Safari, Yahoo, Apple, Flikr, Facebook, Google Maps, Youtube, Wikipedia and Macrumors.
No reloading when switching between them at all!
And I was playing music in the background.

Yes, because you are on the mobile version. iPad Safari has access to REAL webpages which are significantly larger.... and thus even having 3 tabs open will sometimes have you reloading constantly.

And what's the point of using the crippled mobile version of sites on such a gorgeous screen.

Honestly, I didn't need a Nvidia ion or tetra. I don't need quad core processors or a 1tb hard drive, but I think it's crap that Apple decided to put such a measly amount of ram. Ram isn't just for show, it would have really benefited the iPad in all sorts of practical way. And with the rumor of mobile OS 4.0 being multitouch capable really has me confounded. How is this thing going to be running more than two apps when it suffers from amnesia with 3 web pages open?

I'm holding onto the iPad a little longer to see if anything improves (maybe some hidden unharnessed RAM, or revisions in the safari's way of handling cache) if things don't improve though I'm hocking it on ebay. I gave Apple the benefit of the doubt.... twice.

But then again, I can't really blame them. I guess I'm just not the target audience they are gunning for. Maybe Rev2 will hit closer to home.

the ting is there will always be a next ipad so ill do what i did with my iphone sell it and get the new one it might not be easy but we usually know when the next ipad is cumming out or what new features it will have. so sometimes it gives u the upper hand on some of the general public because we actually care that much>

You must have some slow iMac then :) It's just impossible. You can search this forum to see that people have issues with Netflix streaming supposedly because iPad's RAM is too small to do good buffering.

I'm thinking Apple could release a firmware/os update that would allow a virtual page file into the flash memory, for say, maybe 256MB of more space. Wouldn't be as fast as 512MB of dedicated RAM, but would still be better than what it has now. Battery performance might suffer a little though.

I don't have an iMac, I have a Windows 7 PC. I have no problems playing back or encoding h.264 video, but it isn't particularly instant and as snappy as it is on the iPad. Sometimes VLC or WMP will freeze or hang when scrubbing.

I don't stream with Netflix. I'm talking about videos synced from iTunes.

However, I've had no problems streaming from Youtube or the ABC player.

Like I said if u believe the next 5 versions of the ipad they are destin to cum out with will be better do what I do with the iPhone sell it when u know he next version will be significantly better than the one u have now and buy the nex one because I don't think they make the ipad more expensive o ce again like the iPhone it got cheaper but whatever the point is just sell ur ipad befoure or right when the new one cums out and use the money to buy the new one :)

The iPhone 4 is proof positive to me that features like 512 mbs of ram, and a front facing video camera were left out, not because they were not possible to implement, but in order to make the iPad defunct with the next iPad's release.

The iPad could have been soooo much more than it actually was. Now it's strictly inferior to the iPhone 4 (and for the most part, the iPhone 3GS) in every possible aspect except for screen size. That's a damn shame imho.

It's in no way inferior to the iPhone, nor the 3GS. It's faster, and it will run iOS 4 incredibly well. Apple may not have been able to fit 512MB RAM on the A4 at the time.

I only read the first and last page of this thread but I'm really confused about how you can say that it's "... inferior ... for the most part, <to> the iPhone 3GS".

No voice calls, but who would want to hold an iPad to their ear when they can use a phone? No video calls then yes, I'm with you on that one, but the 3GS can't do that either so it's equal on that one.

Similarly, no rear-facing camera. Who would want to hold a huge iPad in front of them to take a family photo or holiday snap when travelling when they can use a camera phone?

As for the other features .. Accelerometer? Equal. RAM? Equal. Flash capacity? iPad wins. Performance? iPad wins. Battery life? iPad wins.

I fail to see how the iPad is inferior to the 3GS in any way that is appropriate for its larger form factor except for the one point where I will concede that the ppi on the 3GS is superior to that of the iPad, oh and compass as well I suppose but that's pretty minor.

I'm not going to disagree with you on that one! Next iPad will almost certainly bump the RAM and add front-facing camera and facetime and maybe a boost in flash storage capacity too. The speed will naturally go up because Apple's in-house developers will be onto the next CPU and GPU iterations by then. Apart from that I wouldn't be surprised to see no other changes except possibly cosmetic changes, maybe weight reduction, and most definitely Apple learning from the first generation and introducing hundreds of invisible changes to the components and internal construction in order to reduce build costs.

3 million people!

No matter how much you say this or that is not good enough in the current version of the iPad and the high price that goes along with it, the numbers speak for themselves and that is all Apple is concerned about.

3 MILLION People have purchased the iPad - They paid the price and truthfully not a whole lot of complaints! As long as that does not change. iPads are GOLDEN! LOL

+1

There are always going to be naysayers of new devices, or those that will never be satisfied with the current offering. Fact of the matter is, the OP is in the minority, as the iPad has NO problems selling all by its lonesome, to the point of ridiculous inventory shortages.

Regarding your concerns, first off, you don't own an iPad. Sounds like you just take the bad reporting out of the forum and use it to create an opinion, which is a mistake and makes you look like a nob.

I agree that the amount of RAM could have been increased with little to no effort from Apple. Chaps my A$$ as well. Different screen sizes would have been nice as well to fill in the portability a little better. However, I've only had one issue with memory, and that was 'probably' related to the program I was using. My iPad does not crash with 4 tabs open in its stock configuration. Its actually very fast in practically everything that it does. Besides, with so many 'jailbroken' iPads, if a complaint did occur, it would be harder than ever to quantify whether an issue is actually iPad or software related. Your 3GS does not have the same processor, architecture, or anything else as the iPad, so to compare on RAM alone, is a bit idiotic.

Much of the stuff that you are crowing about may come in future upgrades if the demand warrants it, but you are a little unrealistic. For example, USB 3? Most of the most expensive laptops don't have USB 3.0 installed, so lol, why would this be an expectation of a consumption device like the iPad? Another one that you mention is the screen resolution. Anandtech's review stated that indoors, the "display is almost flawless". And I would agree. 720p looks gorgeous on the screen, so again, it sounds like a baseless comment from someone who doesn't own one. Finally, in regard to CPU power, sure, I'd give the one up to a netbook processor in terms of a couple of seconds here and there (you make it sound like there is some kind of VAST waiting period between the two which is untrue). However, in terms of convenience and portability, you can keep the netbook, which is where the iPads strength is in comparison. By the time you break out your netbook, fire it up, and look up what you are in need of, I've already logged in and out of the iPad with the same info. 'Instant On' with the iPad is amazing, and takes away any instant time savings that you think that Netbook might bring. Again, a second here and there isn't of importance to me in every day browsing, etc. Then there is the app store...well, that doesn't apply to the net/notebook, so disregard.

Point of the story is that you need to stay focused as to what the iPad is, and appreciate it for that. It's a consumption device primarily, and a very basic creation device secondly. Due to this fact, the iPad is not a notebook replacement. It's a luxury enhancement to the gear you already have. Certainly not a 'must have' versus a 'must want'. You speak about how it should be very sleek and flush, yet you start throwing in the fact that it should have dual analog sticks/nubs? lol...WTF?? Sounds like you don't know what you want either. Easy to do when you don't own the device.

Its certainly not perfected in its first evolution, but will most certainly improve over time to what the consumer wants to see in an upgrade. I'd say that it has had a stellar first showing when viewing on sheer demand.

If you want to take the time to write this drawn out note about the failures of the iPad, a good piece of advice would be to at least buy one and use it first.

I agree.

The iPad is a complicated device so I suppose it's dangerous to try and say what it's supposed to do in a sentence or two but my understanding is that it's supposed to be a device primarily for content consumption and in today's world that really means a device to browse and read stuff on the internet.

Surely the way to judge this first generation device is not to list all the things that it doesn't have, i.e. what it's not, but to ask whether it achieved its design goal, i.e. what it is. As an owner of an iPad I'd have to say that yes, even as a first generation device, it 100% met its design goal.

One can always want more memory, better screen, longer battery life, lighter weight and a hundred other things but in terms of meeting the key criteria I think that the first generation iPad is a stunning success.

Wait, how is it inferior to the 3GS?

But I agree that they intentionally put 256mb of memory in the first iPad in order to make the follow up more appealing, because 2 months later iPhone 4 has 512mb.

Apple may not have been able to fit 512MB RAM on the A4 at the time.

You can't seriously believe that. 3 months after the iPad launch Apple released the iPhone 4 in a much smaller size with 512mb of memory. They could have easily put the same amount of memory in the iPad.

My point was never that the iPad won't sell.

My point was that it could have been sooo much more than it was.

As is, when you turn on the iPad, the first thing it asks you to do is connect it to an actual computer.

This could have been a revolutionary independent device that could have obsoleted netbooks completed.

Instead it just became a luxury item that really isn't all the functional for anything more than browsing the web and watching videos.

Browsing the net, watching videos/movies, games, and music. That pretty much sums up the iPad in a sleek convenient package. It doesn't pretend to be anything else. If you want a netbook or notebook, just buy one....:D

Wake me up when they can flatten my i7 machine into a small flat portable device thats under $1000. Oh wait that STILL wouldn't satisfy your list of demands.

Till then I'm happy with my iPad :)

I don't understand how people can't understand that components cost money...

Go back to the iPad announcement and see the reaction from the competition in reports. No one was expecting such a low price for such a quality device.

The way I see it: iPod Touch.
1st Gen was released and was supported until the release of iOS 4 (that is 3 years?) and it never had a problem with apps.
2nd Gen was rumored to have a camera as well as built in mic (hopes people see with iPad and Facetime and video camera and etc). Never happened. If i remember correctly, only slight design change along with a better wifi antenna were added.
3rd Gen added the 3GS processor (sure it's faster but not something i care about as there was not too much of a difference) and more hard drive.

My point: Rumors will be born - hopes will fly up - keynote will be presented - tears will be let out... I have owned every series of the iPod Touch and the Classic and from experience (unless they change this time) I can say that more flash memory along with more ram (to better support apps - and would hardly make any difference) would be added. Camera? yeah, right. Design change? Wouldn't dream of it. More Flash memory? As some would say, "fosho." Lol.

I would settle for an tablet pc that doesn't need to be connected to another computer to even be turned on for the first time.

I don't wanna see that actually!
