I've never dropped it. I have all these very little dents and scratches on that chrome thing around the phone. I have no clue how it even gets there when I don't abuse it

have you ever bumped into anything when its in your pocket? obviously you're doing something to cause the dents. and again, chrome scratches easily. ive had my phone since july 11th and have used a holster since then and i have no scratches on the bezel or dents, there are some scratches on the logo though. my phone is fine though.

and everyone has to remember whenever a new product/car/anything new comes out theres bound to be some defects, or something might go wrong. thats the risk you take to be the first one to have something.

the batt does not suck either. another instance why reading forums are bad....lol

yeah... my phone averages around 4 hours of usage (this includes being on the phone a little, light texting, web browsing, and playing a few games such as MotionX Poker, Galcon, Collapse and TanZen primarily. With this usage, it can go over 2 days worth of standby in addition to those 4 hours or so of actual usage. I'd say for a smartphone, that's not bad.

Last week I did think my battery might have been going bad, however, because the battery was dropping significantly over night when it was in standby (it'd be around 50% when I went to bed and give me the 20% warning when I turned it on in the morning) and for very light usage, it was barely getting over 1 hour of use before it'd hit 20%. I'm not sure what was up, but I did a restore and a hard reset and it's been working fine ever since. What was odd was that even if I turned it off by holding down the sleep button and swiping the slider, when I turned it back on the battery still drained really faster. It took a hard reset to get it back to its normal battery usage.

I wonder if something like this is what a lot of people encounter, but that seems to be a software issue, rather than an actual problem with the battery.

Nope, I alwys have it the only thing in my right pocket and everything else in my left

I've also had my iPhone since the launch on July 11 and have no dents.. the chrome bezel around the front is not prone to dents, so something is certainly being done to cause them... and I'd say it'd take a bit of force to put a dent there since the area is thin- lower surface area would mean it's more rigid and less likely to dent from a light bump.
My phone does have some light scratching, but it also goes in and out of my pocket all day every day and I don't have a case or invisible shield on it. I did try using a case for maybe a few days once, but found I really disliked the added bulk and just prefer the phone as it was meant to be used. The scratches aren't noticeable unless you're in a lot of light and really look for them anyway. The screen being glass has no scratches.

I keep seeing posts like "the silent switch just fell off my iPhone 3G" or "I have cracks in my iPhone 3G case" etc. but have most of the build quality problems been fixed or is the quality still bad?

If I take the plunge and get the iPhone 3G I dont want it to break after a few days, especially considering the amount of money it costs.

Buy one and don't read these forums, you'll be fine.:D

Yes it really is that bad. Have a good read HERE. As a design Engineer in electronics for a decade I have not seen a top tier company put out anything with this many design flaws internally. It's pathetic to say the least. I have a brand new iMac, and a brand new iPhone that replaced the last gens which I had from previous purchase. I'm always taking it up the yang for Apple and defending them, but this time no amount of fanboy BS can stop me from giving apple a big ripping over this last design. It is absolutely HORRIBLE. Sure the 3g does what it is supposed to do so from a performance standpoint I have no issues with it. It's the build quality, and design that make it the piece of disaster that it is.

The 2g was such a good design from anyone in the electrical fields standpoint. Soldered contacts, weather proof connectors, rigid metal frame construction....... the list could go on forever.

The 3g has a twisting plastic "unibody", no frame. This would be ok IF they hadn't put everything on the motherboard on pressure tabs. This is a piece of metal bent over in a v shape and the pressure of it laying against the v compressing it to the board is all that makes the connection.

So #1- it's not a solid connection. with the plastic frame it twists on the motherboard as the phone flexes. This causes connection issues and all the critical components are in the phone on this design.

#2- it's an open air contact with no plug surrounding it. The contacts are copper/brass and will corrode quickly with the temperature changes of winter and the higher chance of crystals freezing in the air and settling on the open contacts causing connection issues through the winter as it goes along. Another instance however that can happen at ANY time is walking from a cold air condition environment into a hot environment which causes colder items to condensate. Remember when your glasses fog coming out of a cold room into a hot room? That condensation on the contacts of the phone will begin to attract corrosion. On the 2g, the plugs are REAL PLUGS that self seal from the elements.

#3- The entire motherboard of the 3g is one piece. If a single component fails, you have to replace the whole board. The 2g was a 2 piece design separating the phone side from the flash side.

#4- The plastic gets scratched on your phone, you can't replace the back piece like you can on a 2g for a couple bucks. The 3g backing (unibody) IS the mount for everything. Cosmetic issues? It'll cost you $125 for a new back off ebay and then you have to determine if you are up to building the phone from scratch into the new backing. On the 2g, you'd have spent 20 mins swapping the backplate.

#5- as covered the 3g mounts everything to the backplate, which is why we see many more "iphone needs service" screens coming up than on the 2g. Shocks and impacts go directly to the motherboard that is mounted to the plastic, flexing frame. There is a glass component on the 3g phone that will crack in half and render the entire motherboard useless if the phone is dropped. This single component will render the phone dead..... but then again this is a one piece motherboard.... Any single component can kill the phone. On the 2g if the comm board goes out, you just drop signal.... the phone still functions, plus a simple comm board swap won't even affect your HD or anything on it.

Seriously, I could write until my fingers bleed about the 3g phone. I've been a design engineer for a decade. Worked to design aftermarket electronics in Lexus automobiles, I've done about all anyone can do in the field for establishment. I've seen a lot of things, but nothing like how far Apple lost uality with the 3g release. There are just so many steps backwards on this phone. You told apple you wanted a battery that wasn't soldered in so they gave you one that wasn't soldered in....... too bad they stuck it under the motherboard!!!! You have to completely dissasemble the phone and removed every-single-component to get to the battery to replace it........ well, all you said was you wanted a battery that wasn't soldered in.

It sucks compared to my old RAZR but at the same time my old RAZR just made calls. The iPhone lasts me through the day mostly which I guess is the most important.

And no, it won't fall apart in your hands. It's solid. I've had mine since launch day with zero problems.

I had no problems at all with my iphone 3G... no dropped calls... excellent battery life... then last night I push the home button and hear a loud click... now 50% of the time I hit the home button it gets stuck... and when it doesn't get stuck it makes a loud click sound... :( going to :apple: monday to get a new one

Just thought I would mention that I keep my iphone impecibely clean and protected.... just took off the case + front shield in preparation for monday and it is 100% mint... (besides 2 scratches on the bezel from a capsule rebel *shakes fist at switcheasy*)

The home button is mounted on two pins (cheaply made pins at that) and they will break if there is even the slightest flaw in the mold that day at the plant.

one1, I somehow dont think it could be that bad. The weather couldnt break it just by a change in temperature... Thats just mad.

I would say the hardware is fine, with the majority of iPhones sold there would be a lot more of a stink being made if there where too many issues.

Its inevitable that with so many being made there are going to be some duds, if you get one just take it back for a replacement

I have mine in a case (which I know bits of dirt get under it and have probably scratched the back), but being inside a case all the time I am not too bothered, carrying it around all the time its bound to show a few little signs of wear and tear

I'll put up my engineering degree if you'll put up yours ;)

I saw a 3g on ebay tonight have this exact issue. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110306860868&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

Dude lives in Hawaii, has 2200 positive feedbacks over 9 years, says it just quit working out of the blue and blamed it on humidity since the indicator had turned pink. When someone who has a 9 year record of telling the truth talks, you listen.

.........he was right. Just like all the people who take their phone to the bathroom and listen to it while they are in the shower. Sensor turns pink from the steam. His was likely pink by the third day with him living on an island in the humid area he lives in, but it took less than 3 months for it to kill the phone.

Luckily I live in the land of coldness - England! No humidity here! I'll just not bring my iPhone in the bathroom while having a shower, thats kinda common sense anyway.

EDIT: Also that auction says the phone manufacturer is "CNETiPhone3G16GBWhite" and it has a "1-2 megapixels" camera... He dosent seem to know what he's talking about, does he?

And be careful using it outside when its raining ;)

I am in the UK and am always worried if it rings when its raining or looking like its about to

Yeah, I know what you mean, I have having ot use my phone when its raining, but mostly I will just put it on silent and check my voicemail later and call whoever rung me back.

What?

iPhone 3G build quality THAT BAD? Are you kidding? This is rock solid, is without a doubt the best phone ever built, and i owned a lot of them...

I've had a dark spot on my screen. When I took it to the Apple store, The genius said that I had a failing screen. Got a new one instantly. Whoohoo!

Well that settles it then. Millions sold with no problems, but this guy in Hawaii...well let's just say I'm selling mine before it pinks.

Here's my two cents...the first iPhone was probably a tad more durable than the 3G due to being built mostly from aluminum...the back of the second gen is all plastic...I'm guessing for better signal reception. ;) Drop the first one, you got a dent, drop the second one, you get a crack. Or slide it into a frickin' CASE and get neither. ;) :D

neurotic much? you sound like your impression of this phone is a stick of butter in the middle of the desert

I got an iPhone 3G for my birthday a week or two ago and i've already had to replace with a refurb. Grrr. The first one had a dead pixel right out the box and within a few minutes the Apple logo was all scratched up. The back case was also slightly misaligned....enough to feel the lower right 'sticking out' than normal and it froze quite often. I also hate the yellowish screen...it looks like a combination of dust/puke and it is somewhat less bright.

Suffice it to say, the 3G just feels generally more fragile/cheaper than the previous model and i'm not impressed. The iPhone 2G had/has the best build quality overall IMHO and i miss mine but i have to move on

no, its just that there are a lot of ocd people on these forums. chances are that yours will be fine!

lol.. you REALLY need to stop reading these forums if you think the phone is going to fall apart in your hands. The iPhone 3G is actually a very solid phone and the people that complain about a lot of issues are either too anal and will die early due to stress they put on themselves or treat electronics horribly.

I've had my iPhone 3G since launch day and it's had no hardware issues. I know many people with the same experience as mine...

So basically people are idiots and have severe OCD because their $2-300 cell phone broke? I mean, c'mon, sure there's the clumsly folks out there that drop or bang their phones accidentally against something and they break and try and call :apple: out on a manufacturing defect but we all know that this is a REAL problem. Look at the countless threads (a couple by me :D) on the issue, not only in MR forums but all over.

If you have had the perfect iphone since launch then congratulations! Just know that there are folks having real issues here and basically calling them morons for having a problem with the device they just bought and may have been clamoring for quite some time to get is not very nice.

Just remember to "search" before posting when your 'precious' breaks, mmmkay? :)

Would that be the reason for the easy access 2 screws on the bottom of the phone? Easy access, quick replacement, cheap, done!

In researching these problems in the last several months I don't believe I've read anyone mention "HEAT" as being an issue.

Do you think that the plastic housing cracking problems could be a combination of heat from the board and a thin walled back shell?

Very interesting post. Thank you for shedding some knowledge.

What?

Because you REPLACED a lot of them or just because you can't decide on black or white and swap out on a monthly basis? (partially kidding)

Pretty sure he means he's owned a lot of phones, not a lot of iPhones.

My 3G is also perfect, but I feel for the people who are having troubles. Having actual failure numbers versus other phones, though, would be more helpful to potential buyers than personal anecdotes.
