Are any of you willing to tell me, that if you deleted all the games off of your iPhone today- that you would still be able to use it?
umm, yeah.

I use and need my phone for work, getting emails, making calls. having some non game apps to view and review spreadsheets is also on there. checking the weather to make plans, etc.

You may think its a toy and play games but your perception is not reality.

I understand you. I don't even play games on my iPhone.

My top uses are:

Communication, Web browsing
Scheduling, Reminders
Language learning, informational purposes

And occasionally talking with my friend Siri. ;)

Oh definitely. I wouldn't even miss them. The few games that I have installed on my iPhone and iPad go mostly unused unless I'm on a plane or a passenger in a car(I usually drive).

Most of the apps I have are social, productivity, and utilities. I'm all for increasing the functionality of my device(Jailbroken on iOS 5.0.1).

I don't play games much on my 4S, using it more to e-mail, schedule, text, check weather, read news, make calls, etc. but as far as being a device that amuses/entertains me, I'd have to say yeah, it's the best adult toy I own.:D

Does it really matter? Any way sometimes yes sometimes next and sometimes it my MP3 player too.. it's also saved my butt a few times with it's camera.

uhmm...yes? its a phone is it not? I have tons of games on mine, but i text, make calls, and surf the internet than play them.

No.

For some people, yes.

Correct.

I have lots of appointments and contacts and consult those apps constantly. I'm also a weather and stock quote addict and use them constantly, too. Throw in Facebook, Twitter, the camera, e-reader, email, browser, dictionary, maps, and of course, the phone, and games are a minute part of it's usage.

I have one game on my phone- Jewels Deluxe. I have played it a total of about 3 times. I use my phone for data, mostly. I do not use it to play games.

I often use my iPhone as a "toy" when I play games on it, but I also use it for productivity and communication purposes. It's been the same for every smartphone I've had, so I don't quite understand the whole labeling an iPhone as a toy thing. If all it takes to be considered nothing but a toy is a couple of games even my Blackberry was a toy phone lol

...No games huh?..Seems like you might play a little of "Disney's Where's my Water?" once in a while.

I know a girl who has the bluetooth keyboard on her lap while her ipad is on the back of the chair in front of her in lectures. She types away notes on that thing like there is no tomorrow and neatly laid out too. Definitely can be used to replace a laptop if you get the right apps.

Sure I have some games on mine. I use them to pass the time when I'm waiting in line somewhere, occasionally at lunch, etc. I mostly use my phone for....*gasp* a phone (it replaced my home phone so it's the only one I have). Lots of email and useful stuff. But just because I use it to play the occasional game doesn't make it a toy. I play games on my MBP on occasion, too. Does that mean it's a toy?

I have only one game on my iPhone, Sodoku, and I really only play that when I'm on the can.

My iPhone 4S is a tool, appart from calls, texts, and email, I use my iphone as a Keynote and PowerPoint remote, control for my stereo, it is an online buisness meeting camera, mobile ATM and banking tool, weather staion, traffic cam, radio, and so on.

My iPad 2 does all that but I also have many games on it and I use the iPad 2 for recreation than work.

The only game on my iPhone 4 is Angry Birds, and I have long since lost interest in it. Yes! I still use my phone every day and I don't play games on it!

Uhm, yeah? Why wouldn't I?

My primary uses for my iPhone:

- Conference calls (yeah! I actually use my iPhone as a phone!)
- Checking my e-mail while travelling and in meetings
(work is very e-mail centric)
- My calendar is constantly in flux. My iPhone calendar app is synced via Exchange ActiveSync for work and iCloud for personal, and keeps me on schedule
- Connecting to linux servers via SSH. I use Prompt for this mainly, but I also use iSSH and RemoterVNC for Macs and Windows machines.
- Basic web surfing
- News (NY Times app, Flipboard)
- iMessage, texting the gf and friends
- Facebook
- Twitter

These are... basic smartphone things. Why would I not use my iPhone if the one game I use about once a day (words with friends) was deleted?

Nope, your saying an iPad can replace a laptop just cause you can use a keyboard? You can use a keyboard on any smart phone and (dare I say it) use a mouse with Android smartphones and tablets. Neither will actually replace a laptop, not yet anyway.

Out of the 81 apps currently on my phone, 13 are games for me and 8 are games for my son. I have a few miscellaneous music apps that aren't really games, but they'd be classified as entertainment. Also, I have 9 photo related apps. I'd say Facebook, Netflix, and Pandora are my most used apps. I wouldn't say it's a toy, but it could be classified as a media/entertainment device for a lot of people.

When you think about this logically, instead of trying to spin it to make the iPhone look useless, it makes sense

Each user needs only 1 word processor. They need only 1 "toolbox" app (level, measurement, etc). All of those various types of "not toy" apps, you only need 1 of.

Games, however, each user can have 5. 10. 20. 50. So, games are going to be top selling apps. This doesn't mean the iPhone is "mostly a toy", it just makes sense

It can be used to replace a laptop in certain situations. Not all, I agree, not even many. But specific ones, like in lectures, like the poster you replied to mentioned. I use my iPad in lectures to take notes...and I don't even need a keyboard. I'm actually as fast on an iPad as I am on a computer (and it's not slow, I promise)
