Playing with the numbers on these two pages, I've created an illustration of the different display sizes. I must admit that I find this a bit confusing, but if I understand this correctly, the iPhone 8 Plus has a larger display area than the X, both when measured in square cm/square inches and in "square points". However, the pixel count is greater for the X than for the 8 Plus, and I assume that means that the X will show more detailed photos?

Note that these numbers are for full-screen, not for the safe areas – I've not subtracted the status bar or the home bar area of the X. Taking these areas into account, the numbers for the X would all be worse.

This is great, Can you make one that illustrates how a 1080p screen fits inside the X and extrapolate its size in inches (compared to an iPhone Plus screen)

Another way of looking at it is the iPhone X has a resolution that supposes that of the iPhone Plus series. It is also adequate for displaying a full 1080p movie in the area below (or to the left of) the notch™

Something like this?

EDIT: added arrow on the iPhone X illustration to indicate that 2000 pixels corresponds to the HD region.

So according to this, you gain 0.3" when watching a 1080p 16/9 video on the X compared to the 4.7" iPhone 8.

Wouldn't the physical screen of the X need to be a tad wider than the 4.7" iPhone for this to be true? Is it wider?

I understand the point about reducing the usable area on the X for the status bar info and home bar - but then surely need to do the same on Plus also as in most apps the status bar also takes up the top line of the screen? just trying to compare like for like?

So won't the X therefore have to upsample most video's, as they are natively presented at 1920x1080? Which will lead to poorer video quality? o_O

To take advantage of the top and bottom edges? Just a bit. Likely it will remain at 1080p... they may go unused to account for the home bar or distortion of the extreme edges of the screen? This is all speculation but video playback isn't going to be as bad as the internet is chicken littlening about.

Do American engineers actually work in inches? I thought your military and NASA were all metric these days?
Just convert everything to mm and call it a day...

No, the screen of the X is 2000x1125 pixels in dimension and most 16:9 videos come in 1920x1080 pixels, so they will have to be upsampled somewhat to appear on the X. So they appear like it is indicated in post 52 above.

My work colleague has a Galaxy S8 with the same size screen as the X. I am using a 6s plus at the moment. I held the s8 to see if it felt smaller, TBH, its a strange one. It "Feels" bigger as its taller, but then you do notice sometimes that the screen is narrower, the longer I used it, the more i feel that I might miss the width of the plus. Size really does matter. I am hoping i can get used to it when i get the X

Yes I agreed with you I said a bit. Alternative: It can stay pixel for pixel to leave a small boarder around thee extreme edge of the screen.

Also the resolution is 2436 x 1125

I’m confused about all of these threads comparing it to the Plus. When rumors started, wasn’t it said that this phone should be a future replacement for the regular one and that a Plus version will show up next year? At least that has been my impression for many weeks now.

Predictions were wrong.

How so? The usable screen area is just a tiny bit bigger on the X than it is on the normal phone. I believe in some other thread I read that it’s 5.0 inches, which isn’t that much different from the 4.7 on the normal one. The width of the phones is very similar, too.

In so that you won't see an X plus next year. maybe near the product refry but i doubt it.

Sadly it's spot on

Considering note 8 uses pretty much all the display it's frustrating to say the least. Even the S8 has more usable screen and it's 5.8 inch screen as well

The full screen of the iPhone X is 'useable' the 5" area only pertains to un distorted video playback
