Is the iPhone X screen bigger than the iPhone 8 Plus screen?

But it isn't. It's aproximate as wide as a 5,0 inch 16:9 screen

Here's some scale models:

That's the case not the screen. When viewed in a landscape orientation, the screen would have the following heights on each device (with approximate diagonal for 16:9 viewing)

Plus
(pixels) 1080 / (ppi) 401
H 2.69"
D 5.5"

X
(pixels) 1125 / (ppi) 458
H 2.46
D 5.0" (when watching 16:9 videos)

Standard
(pixels) 750 / (ppi) 326
H 2.30"
D 4.7"

Ok so I’ve had the X for several hours now. I came from a 7 Plus. The dimensions don’t lie, but they don’t tell the whole story either. The display on the X is just different all around. It’s a different shape, in a different body, with a different look. And I love it. It’s freaking amazing. Yes it’s a little less wide. But it’s taller, and the OLED just looks terrific. I also love the whole gesture navigation approach. Much better than clicking a home button. So smooth and intuitive once you get used to the change. And this phone feels so much better in my pocket and hand than the Plus ever did.

Those who are still unsure, or who really prioritize screen size, just need to spend some time with one before deciding. It will be a very individual decision. I can only tell you that I’m never looking back.
