Im using Mojave on my 27 inch 2019 iMac and about 3 weeks ago a Security Update was released by Apple for Mojave and i recall multiple people came here on the forum saying that their Macs started experiencing issues after applying the new security update and that it should be avoided, any new information regarding Security Update 2020-002?

You should definitely install it. You will have a world of fun as your computer constantly locks up. Life is more exciting that way. See here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/10-14-6-random-freezes-and-ui-glitches.2228865/

Edit: Okay, that was the quick, fun, flip answer. Here's some more nuance.

I have had 10 crashes since April 15. Someone can see how many they have by doing in a terminal: ls -lF /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ |grep Restart |wc -l

But the problem can't be too widespread or Apple would have fixed it by now. It's perhaps specific to certain versions of Intel graphics. You have AMD graphics so maybe you would be OK?

I have continued to run Mojave with this problem. My reasoning is as follows:

1) I use this computer to access the Information Superhighway, so I want to be sure I have the most recent security patches. I don't want to take a chance by not running the most up to date software.

2) Catalina seems to have its own set of problems.

3) But it is very exasperating. Especially because the lockups come out of nowhere. My therapy is to come to MacRumors and bitch about the situation every few days.

I have 2 macs running Mojave with SU 2020-002, a 2019 MBA and an early 2009 iMac (9,1 that doesn't even support Mohave). No issues at all on either machine.

OP, could you not do a TM backup, install the SU and see? Then if any issues come up, just clean install Mojave which brings you back to 10.14.6 build 18G103, restore from TM, then just skip SU 2020-002. I would then install the standalone SU 2002-001 update and wait for 003.

Anyone considering installing the Mojave Security Update 2020-002 should read the following thread first

It’s a long read with several twists and turns. And some of the issues discussed may be 2018 Mini specific. But it may convince you that applying 2020-002 is riskier than the security issues it addresses :(

FWIW I’m waiting for 2020-003 to be released and even then I’ll wait several weeks.

I think that’s the wisest thing to do at this point

Avoid. If you having video crashes just reinstall OSX via Command+r. It will not erase your data just reinstall Mojave.

edit: You may still need to reinstall the security update 2020-001 for protection.

Normally I would delay updating any security updates and check the internet for user feedbacks or problems with that security update. It’s not always smooth sailing with those security updates. And once I’ve decided to perform the security update, I always keep a clone of my existing boot drive as a precaution. If problems arise after the update, I can safely go back to previous OS settings. I also read a posting on the Catalina 10.15.4 Supplemental Update that bricked some of the MacBook Pros T2 firmware. It's a hassle.

I updated my 2018 Mac mini on April 27th and haven't had any crashes from the latest security update. I'm still a little Leary of upgrading to Catalina though.

No sleep related crashes either? Interesting. Just curious, when did you buy your Mac Mini?
I’m starting to suspect there was a bad batch of Mac Mini’s made, and mine is one of them.

How do the sleep crashes happen on your Mac? I have a 2019 iMac and i often get a situation where the mac doesnt wake up from sleep when i click the mouse or keyboard after the mac has been asleep for a day or slightly more than a day and i end up having to do a quick click on the power button on the back of the iMac to wake it up from sleep. not sure if thats considered a sleep crash though. I certainly did NOT install the latest security update for Mojave nor do i intend to upgrade to Catalina based on the horrendous feedback reported here on the forums

What you're mentioning is your iMac waking up from hibernation mode. Takes longer to wake up since the sleep image gets loaded from your bootdrive instead of the memory. :)

My sleep crashes happen as soon as I put my Mac to sleep. In my case it is repeatable and takes about 20 seconds. After that, it reboots and shows an error report.

So whats the "proper" way to wake up an iMac from hibernation mode? Just press a key on the mouse or keyboard once and wait for the iMac to wake up? im pretty sure i waited close to 20-30 seconds once and it still didn't wake up until i manually pressed the Power Button on the back of the iMac to wake it up from sleep.

hmm.. AFAIK Pressing a key or your mouse is the proper way.. But it might be that it's not actually waking from hibernation but from ''safe sleep''. I have no idea what that would indicate..

“Some portable Mac computers have a feature called safe sleep. With safe sleep, each time the Mac goes to sleep, the current state of the Mac is saved, including open apps and open documents. Safe sleep prevents your information from being lost if the Mac is completely shut down during sleep, which could occur if the battery runs down or is replaced.

If your Mac needs to access the saved state when it wakes up, a progress bar appears until your Mac is ready to use.”

I never see a progress bar though when waking iMac using power button so it must not be safe sleep

hm, not sure then.

Can confirm my Macbook Pro (13" Early 2015) experiences the same problem (freezes, Interface glitches) when trying to use my Digital Audio Workstations. Some of the Audio programs I use are very GPU Intensive.

I'm surprised that Apple still hasn't fixed this issue. It's been two months since the security update 2020-002 came out, you would think that they would fix a kinda major glitch (and a problem) like this a bit faster??

:/

To OP: yeah, don't install. Unless you want trouble.

Edit: I'm on High Sierra 10.13.6 and installed SecUp 2020-002 march 25th.

OK so I've been running 2020-003 for two days now, and for all I can tell the GPU freeze/reset problem is finally solved. I can no longer replicate it, and it hasn't manifested on its own during leisurely or heavy graphical tasks.

Since 2020-002 I have the GPU problem with some video content, and even in "massively graphical" contexts like browsing large image galleries with Firefox, but I can't confirm yet that 2020-003 solves the problem as I installed it just 12 hours ago.

I did have this problem with 2020-002 AND 2020-003, though: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ecurity-update-2020-002-and-2020-003.2227824/

Thanks for the heads up, but I think I will still hold off installing the security update 2020-003, after I had to “undo” the installation of 2020-002 and go back to 2020-001. WHEW!
