Another no-artistic user here

Just my 2 cents: I'm a physician, and I've been using a mac as my only computer since 2001 (just before I started my postgraduate training).

In the last hospital I was working, about 70-80% of the residents and physicians used macs (mainly iBooks); even the director of education bought macs for the hospital (used for projection in the auditoria, conferences and general purposes).

Right now, in my new hospital, about 45% of the staff are mac users, and we are the ones that DO NOT have problems with viruses, malware and similar annoyances that plague the windows world in every office where people bring their own computers and USB thumb drives.

So, here is another career that benefits from Macs that is not art related.

It all depends on what you want to do with it. Homeuse? Get a Mac saves you lot's of hassle. They both have their good and bad things imo.
:apple:

I guess I'm an average Joe.

I don't have Photoshop or any "music-making" program installed and get more done on my 12'' G4 Powerbook then I did on my old 2,4 GHz Dell.

The only thing I'm missing is the occasional gaming, but if you get an iMac you'll even have the joy of PC-gaming.

Go for an iMac, you won't regret it.

I got my mac for my bday in march so the switch was really fast. I thought that you had to be the "artsy-fartsy" person to really use a mac. But I bought a book about it (yes I'm a nerd: I love to read) So I started to use my Mac and within a week of getting my MacBook Pro I gave my PC to the boyfriend. I don't have a creative bone in my body, I take pictures but I just load them to the MBP and then facebook them. Its a really great machine, I haven't even touched the PC. And so far, people who've seen mine and used it a little want macs too.

I'd say go with it.

After using windows for five years I decided to purchase an iMac, I have found it very disappointing, The annoying thing is after spending more money for an iMac than you would for a compatible windows computer you have less programs, added to which they ask you to pay for the additional ones, which come as standard with windows, I think it's a very mean company

So, what programs come standard that you speak of. The only thing I can think of is word processor which is just a great program in it's own (that's sarcasm).

I think if you give the Mac chance you will find it to be a far superior to a windows machine. And besides, by the time you get Office 2007 and Anti-virus and spyware stuff and more memory and the list goes on, you are still spending money for the PC.

Peace:cool:

Thanks all! My brother also told me not to buy an ipod touch (which i did) and buy a zune 2. pssh. i love my ipod. so, i am getting the mac, with little to no worries now!

Except iMovie, iWeb, iDVD, iTunes, GarageBand, iPhoto etc. Plus all the great free third party applications like Adium Gimp Handbrake Mactheripper Transmission Onyx Blah blah blah (they were on my dock at the time).

Remind me again what comes with Windows? Movie Maker? Hahaha, as standard my ass.

So you have to pay for iWork, you have to pay for Microsoft Office as well, and iWork is a damn sight cheaper and a damn sight better for the majority of stuff. Still can't afford iWork, download openoffice.

Oh and the Zune is a total joke, you can share music? Yeah great, for 3 days, and you have to find someone else who actually has one (and theyve sold 1.2mil units worldwide so that should be easy, not).

Good to hear :) If your brother is that biased, just ignore him. He'll poke fun at you for getting it, no doubt...it seems everyone does, but, it's fine. If you're happy with your computer, that's all that matters, whether it's a Mac or whatever.

Congrats! You'll love your new mac. I got an iPod touch too, it's a pretty amazing little device :D.

Lovematch, if you can't find the programs that you need at the stores. Just come on here and anyone will help you out. There is a very nice bunch of mac users on here. :D
You can also find some apps on the computer free of charge.
Iwork is just about half the price of Microsoft word. Which works for me just fine, it does the same thing.
My husband got a laptop not too long ago and he didn't get any free software with it. He paid to get the restore disks when he bought the computer. You used to get word in computers but not anymore. You get trials.

My goodness it hadn't been my intention to stir up such a hornets nest, but most of the comments appear to be trying to give a well balanced point of view which I appreciate.

Meanwhile could someone explain how to remove languages from my computer that I accidently downloaded when first starting as I require more space.

Secondly can anyone explain how to get gifs files to work,

Many thanks for your assistance and constructive help.

That's what they call "brotherly love"

You don't need to do anything to make a .gif file work. It's just an image file. If you're talking about making it animated just ctrl + click and open it in safari.

I have been a PC+Windows user for the last 13 years or more. I do all kinds of stuff on the PC..be it photo editing (not complicated one though), programming, games, spreadsheets, Internet, music etc..all the way from Windows 3.11 till Vista.

I switched to Mac a month ago after playing around with my fren's MacBook Pro. I was amazed and still am amazed now! I can basically anything with the Mac. All the essential tools are built-in except certain applications that are required to perform the task more efficiently. Yes..I paid for the Mac at a higher price than the PC, but it's worth every single penny. The experience is just awesome! :D

As someone said earlier, Macs are simply a computer and nothing more. I'm sorry but your brother is dead wrong if he thinks Macs are only used by Artists and Musicians.

Congrats :D

And honestly, Im no artist or musician either. I use my mac just for chatting, surfing, music, tv shows/movies. Pretty much the average joe. granted I do programming work but I can easily manage that on a PC too.

Macs are no different. They're just a little better then PCs in build quality, style, and of course the OS. imo.
