I'm going to buy my first personal Mac with a bonus check I'm getting for Christmas. I'm going with the 13" MBP for a couple of reasons. The first reason is that I HATE the white Macbooks. I've got one at work, along with the rest of the staff, and after a couple years of work they are so filthy and scratched up and the keys/palm rest are so dirty and disgusting that I don't even like touching them sometimes (when I got mine I scrubbed the hell out of it with alcohol and soft scrub, and it came pretty clean, but after just a couple of weeks it got dirty again). Second is I love the look/feel of the aluminum. Also, the SD card slot will come in handy for me. The backlit keyboard is a plus as well. I also love that the whole display is glass from edge to edge. I don't mind spending a couple extra hundred dollars to get the, if noting else, nicer looking MBP (hell, I've already commited to spending a grand, what's $200 more to the get the model I like better?). I'm just looking to do some very light picture/video editing and some website creating and I can't wait to get my hands on a new 13" MBP. I jusy hope if they're doing any subtle updating that they do it before Christmas, cause I'll be really pissed if they refresh it in January.

I totally understand where you're coming from. But in defense of the new MB's, the new ones have a slick/glossy palm rest so the discoloring should be MUCH less. The old version had that textured thing that was a dirt trap.

Too bad you couldn't have bought on a couple of months ago. I got my MBP for $1099 + a free iPod Touch + a free printer. Now that's a deal.;) The savings went to offset my little upgrades.

Well I am elligible for the education discount (I'm a teacher), so I'm happy about that. The free stuff would have been nice, but I already have an iPhone and a new printer. I could have sold them to pay for more RAM, but I'll get it sooner or later. I'm just stoked to get my very own MBP. I haven't been this excited for Christmas in years. :D

It's funny when I first saw the new MBs I actually had the opposite reaction. I thought that apple was trying to make the distinction between Pro and consumer sharper

The new MB has improvements like the LED screen and multitouch trackpad which are in my opinion essential (especially the trackpad) for keeping the MB relevant (woops forgot battery)

But on the other hand you have the absolute bare essential ports (2USBs, ethernet and display port - that's only two more than the MBAir)

And the new one lacks some of the nice touches that make a Mac laptop special such as the IR sensor and the battery light indicator.

I think the processor specs are kind of irrelevant because A) even before the upgrade the difference in processor was not the selling point for the 13 MBP over the old MB and B) the Pro can eventually be upgraded to who knows what. There are plenty of PCs with better specs on paper but what makes Macs special is the whole package (I can't believe I just used that Fanboy line but in this case it really is true to some extent)

Anyway not to say that the new MBs aren't a good upgrade cause they are but I was actually a bit surprised that apple didn't lower the price to complete their "this is your CONSUMER Mac message"

^^^^ I still think they could put an Atom motherboard in the case, downgrade the display, downgrade/remove the optical and sell it to compete w. cheaper PC's at $699. It solves their compromising quality issues,

Poly MB exteriors are impossible to keep scratch free.

My aluminum however is still scratch free after months of classroom/desk/carrying bag/carpet usage.

The Poly on the other hand was noticeably swirling after a week (like car paint).

Totally agree. I loved my original white macbook (2006-2009)...but the car analogy describes it perfectly...that and since owning the 13 inch MBP for 2 months the aluminum has yet to show one mark or scratch, which is amazing and have me made realize that owning the white macbook made me a bit OCD...trying to keep it clean all the time...

If I were in the market now I'd buy the polycarb MB

Honestly, me too...

...But I looooove my MBP.

Goodbye White!

I think we can expect a 13" MBP update before Christmas. If not, I'll still buy the entry-level MBP anyway. I still can't think of a reason why Apple didn't update the MBP line this week.

The new MB is slightly better with the bigger hard drive. Although I don't need that much space, it's better than the 160GB. I use firewire on my iBook on an almost daily basis (external HD) and the aluminium casing is so sexy! I'm more productive at night so the backlit keyboard will come in handy. As for the SD slot, it gives me an extra free USB port.

I know. I was referring to the palm rest area dirt/discoloring issue.

Atom is too dang slow though, at least do one of the ULV core 2s at 1.4 ghz or something. They still make thin and lights for that much. Slap that in with an ion (9400m) and you got yourself a lappy. Of course that might eat into the macbook air's market.

Kind of missing the point of comparing the standard MB with the entry level MBP, and the $200 price difference.

So yes, the MB wins on the hard drive comparison.

i personaly would bever pay that much to get a bigger hard drive. i would buy one a lot cheaper than that from best buy and put it in myself. same goes with ram

Is this confirmed, or is still based on the fact one can't add an Apple remote when ordering it online? This could just be a bug in the Apple Store..

Until it's confirmed though either by Apple or by actually testing it on a live unit, can we know for sure?

Patrix.

cant use it because there is no infrared port.
duhhhhh

duhhhhh

and DUHHHHHHHHHHHHH what I was asking was whether that was confirmed yet, or just conjecture based on the lack of remote in the Apple Store when selecting the Macbook.

Seems the infrared port IS missing according to that little screenshot someone pasted, but DUH I didn't know that not owning one and seeing no reviews of it anywhere yet, how could I DUH know? DUH!
