so there was the iPhone... then the iPhone 3G which was really the iPhone2G... then the iPhone 3GS which was really iPhone 3G and now iPhone 4G which is not actually a 4G phone... man apple makes this confusing...

I think it will simply be iphone 4 and then they will add 4G when the network is available.

They didn't call it the iPhone again. That device still exists. My current first gen device was marketed as the iPhone. It's product name is "iPhone", so it wouldn't make business sense to rejuvenate the name without causing some issues. Like you, I believe that HD is a more appropriate or suitable name if your condition is true.

You are absolutely right! Apple never reuses names! Now if you will excuse me I'm going to buy some iBooks. Oh wait... ;)

I'm not particularly fond of that but I guess it's not about what it's called, it's about what it can do.

Okay, let's switch things up a little. With Steve Jobs's recent obsession with the iPad, how about "iPad mini" ? ;)

I suppose that if the new iPhone does in fact have a higher resolution display, iPhone HD does sound possible.

My money is on iPhone GP. An eponymous moniker to an engineer that played such a leading role in this phone's publicity.

Andy, I LOL'd. :D

I really like iPhone HD, but mostly because the HD would refer to 720p video capabilities and a presumably higher screen resolution.

iPhone 2010

Hello my Apple Iphone friends,

I may or may not be right but in my opinion, Apple are nothing if not consistent, having built up the Iphone brand from nothing they are not about to flush it all down the drain & with Mr Jobs back on the job( sorry couldn't resist! )Apple will want to showcase what new developement they have been working on this past year. So with the online leaks and what has officially been released my guess is with a 5 Mega Pixal Camera, High Definition Touch Screen that Apple will want to advertise this and call the next iPhone HD.
In the past we had 3G,3GS so this would keep with Apple branding consistancy.
Any one else agree?

4G is referencing iPhone 4th generation, not the same as 3G representing 3G network capability.

Plus Audi might sue.

True but it would be kind of misleading for apple to name it the 4g. There will be a lot of people out there who will assume that 4g means it is 4g network capable because the 3g meant it was 3g capable. If you are going to give a phone a name because of a certain feature (3G after 3G network capability) then you need to keep with that pattern so you don't confuse a lot of people (meaning they shouldn't call this phone the 4G if it only works with a 3G network.)

It may seem like it won't be a big deal but there are a lot of stupid people who will be confused and will end up complaining.

Looking at how Apple names their iPod line, the new name should reflect its physical feature of sort. Something along the line of HD makes sense, or maybe something in reference to one of a new feature. iPhone Solid, iPhone Metal?

To everyone who thinks it will be called iphone HD:

Do you really think apple would end their device name with HD when microsoft has already done it with the Zune? iphone HD and Zune HD hmmm....

First of all, what's a Zune? Second, if nobody knows what a Zune is...does it matter if Apple names its product HD?
