I think some people are just mad they chose one way or the other and are trying to make themselves feel better

It's just personal preference. No need to try to make one's self feel better or other's feel bad.

Just buy which every looks better. I don't tend to do things in the dark, so a light colored bezel sticks out more when watching video etc. so I always opt for tvs, monitors etc. with dark borders around the screen.

Others like white and other light colored borders and there's nothing wrong with that.

I ordered online as I wanted to get the exact model I wanted with no waiting in line hassles etc. and I'm not a "gotta have the new gadget day 1!!" type of person anyway. :D

Love mine. No dead/stuck pixels, no yellowing, not a hint of light leak at the brightest settings.

The white doesn't distract me at all, even when watching a movie in the dark. And when reading a book, I like it even more -- don't have that black border contrasting.

It's personal preference, everyone's tastes differ, that's why there IS a choice. The white doesn't show fingerprints and looks pretty awesome to me, and even doing photography work or watching a movie, I'm not staring at the bezel, that's for sure. :)

Was exchanging it easy or was it more of a hassle?

No it was super easy, got a reps attention, he checked with the back to see if they had more, I asked to check if it had screen bleed so they had a specialist activate it, then I checked it and it had bleed so they brought out another one and it had a little better bleed but they told me that it was the last one but if i wanted to I can come back in a day or so, got the reps card and went on with my night.

The rep was surprised that I wanted black instead of white, said that white sold out faster and has been the most sought after. Then an another rep came by and was like, you know how apple made the lower end MacBook white the cheapest and then the pro's more expensive and looked better.

But yeah, the exchanging was a breeze. :p

So it looks like the answer to my question is:

No. The white iPad is not "bad". It is not a matter of usability, it is just a matter of personal preference. And you can't really lose because you can always swap it out for the other color.

Thanks all! :)

Cool, thanks!

Was it a Apple store or a different retailer?

Ok? Sent from someone who enjoys black bezel tvs and non girly iDevice colors.

The question was whether or not the white bezel was distracting when watching a movie in the dark. As you profess to like black bezels, why bother to answer this? Let those with experience speak.

In a dark room with a bright screen, you don't even see the bezel.
This is based on my experience with my manly pink and white iPad 2 ;)

Anandtech's perspective

"Another welcome change - the return of the white iDevice. After the no-show that was the white iPhone 4, I was pleased to see Apple ship the white-bezeled iPad 2 on time with no production hitches. I was also wrong about how good white would look. Instead of being overwhelming or busy, the white bezel actually has one notable advantage over black - it doesn't show fingerprints or dust. That alone was what constantly drove me crazy about the previous generation - it always looked dirty. Shockingly, white seems to actually make sense."

From here.

Yes but your still gonna see the finger print on the screen itself, so the white bezel is saving you from like 20% of the screen from not showing the prints?
Either way, the screen, any color, heck even it came in red! Will still show prints.

Color is just preference. That's all. I had white but it didn't work out for me so I happily went to exchange for black. Simple as top ramen. :p

I think white looks great with the screen off. When using the OS, it doesn't look as fluid as black.

I was able to play around with both the black and white varieties today at the Apple Store. The white was not distracting in any way at all to me. Frankly, I could tell no difference between the on screen images of either--both were very good and the same. Since they had none in stock, I came home and ordered a white 16GB 3g AT&T. Out of spite for a few of our fellow forumers, I nearly bought a pink cover (I'm a 52-year old man). ;)

White just looks cheap and seems it would be distracting no matter what your looking at, I was debating getting white but went with my gut and got black... I couldn't be happier

White is great actually.

I've watched hulu and Netflix and the white bezel wasn't distracting at all.

I think white + red smart cover looks great.

Yes it does and that the combo I want, but no red smart covers at best buy yesterday.

I bought an iPad as an entertainment device and have not be distracted by the white bezel. I was going to get black, but after I saw the white one I changed my mind.

Got to compare the white and black models today. I was surprised to see the difference between the two as I was leaning towards the white one until I saw the difference. The colors in the same photo were brighter and pop out better with the black and the movies stood out as well. So it was a no brainer for me, I went with the black.

I found this to be true.

I had my white for a day and actually just got back from exchanging it for a black one. Personally, I'm happier now with the color... the light bleed on the other hand... not so much. Gonna go back in a few days and swap out for a new one. Other than that, I like black better. :D

Wow, you have a store that has stock for two exchanges? Are they Apple store white box models? Every store in my metro area is sold out.

One thing I don't like about my white iPad is that the bezel is really annoying when using it in the dark. It seems to glow slightly with a lighter color than the rest of the screen, while black bezels just disappear. I actually gave me a headache from prolonged use.

I got the white because it was the last one that they had. I was afraid that I wouldn't like the white, but I'm loving it. Its a nice change from my original iPad. If you think that you might like the white, get it and live with it for two weeks. If you find that you don't like it, exchange it.
