Personally, I have never liked the laptop form factor as a mobile option. Too awkward to use in a plane or a train seat. To heavy and bulky to get through an airport (unless you have a netbook, I guess), not good for e reading. I have had a few laptops in my life, and they don't tend to go anywhere with me. They are mostly used at my kitchen table when I don't feel like going down to my office to use the computer or if I REALLY need to get something done when we visit my parents downstate.
My laptop will be replaced by my iPad for all but one piece of software--and that software is actually going to be on iPad soon too. I agree with what Leo LaPorte said the other day--the iPad is the computer that Apple set out to build 35 years ago--it's a computer for everyone, not just geeks. I plan on using it to its fullest potential and I am really excited to finally have a device that's useful during travelling or commuting. My iPhone is definitely not going to be used as much on the train anymore.
