I've done my downgrade on iPhone 5 and iPad 2 gsm and I've done it downloading firmware from Apple site and using Apple software and nothing more
As long as you will have proper firmware image downgrade will be ALWAYS possible.

I did just try it. iTunes won't install it because it isn't the proper build. This error happens because Apple is no longer signing anything but iOS 7. Just because you can download the IPSW doesn't mean you can restore your device to it. Downloading the IPSW is like being given a treasure chest that's locked. Apple will give you the key to open it. But after a while, Apple won't give out the key for older chests, only new chests. iOS 6 is an old chest that Apple isn't giving out the key for anymore. In the older pre-3Gs days, you could restore to any firmware, but no more. Only what Apple is signing. Why don't you go and give it a try yourself again right now. You'll get the exact same error as I and everyone else that would try to restore to iOS 6. There's no way around it. Millions of people know this. If you want to learn how you are mistaken, do some reading on SHSH blobs are how they are used during the restore process.

Sorry please ask me first what I've did and after this feel free use this in comment :D

Or second version: could you please more specific why it is not possible to do something what few hours ago was done with firmware file with md5 checksum listed in my previous comment?

Can't decide if just plain wrong or just plain trolling.... Hmmm

Cold you please show screenshot of this error?

Repository with IPSW files it is normal content served over HTTP .. not a chest or chest with treasures.
You have md5 checksum in my comment co you can compare.
Did you check your md5 checksum?

iPhone 5 and iPad 2/3 3G .. this is not a "pre-3Gs" HW.

Still I have at home ipws images which I've been using two days ago.
In few hours I'll try to repeat downloading these images and if md5 checksum will be the same I don't see why it should not be working (it will be superstitious, isn't it?).
FYI: on downgrade I've been using latest version of Windows iTunes.

Nevertheless I don't need to repeat downgrade today because my friend sitting with me in the same office done downgrade on iPhone 5 TODAY .. without any problems/errors. I didn't seen any questions about any kind of keys. Full downgrade instruction is:
- download correct ipws file
- put you iphone/ipad in DFU mode
- click on restore button in iTunes holding shift. This will allow point on on downloaded ipws image
- start restore
You can do above on computer not connected to the public network.

Did you try to make downgrade today? maybe something what was not possible in last few years now is possible (?)

Apple must verify the firmware as part of the install process. For an iPhone 5, Apple is not verifying any firmware but iOS 7.0. There is no way to downgrade to any other firmware, it is literally impossible.

Sorry what you mean "Apple"?
Software on your compute? Public http/whatever service?

Again: You can do upgrade/downgrade using computer NOT CONNECTED to the public network with iTunes with.
Public connectivity is necessary after downgrade/upgrade but before restore all applications data from last backup but this stage will be done on working upgraded/downgraded iOS device.

The only way to install firmware on your phone is to plug into your computer, open iTunes, hit "restore" or "upgrade" and then select the firmware you want to install. When you do this, Apple (the company) checks the firmware you are attempting to install and the device you are attempting to install it on. If the firmware is no longer being signed, the install will fail. As of now, the only version of iOS that Apple will allow to be installed on an iPhone 5 is iOS 7. If you attempt to install iOS 6.1.4, 6.1.3, or any other version of iOS on an iPhone 5, it will not work.

I just signed up to say kloczek your an idiot! You don't know what the hell your talking about you fool!!

Im glad I'm still running 6.1.3 on all my devices, iOS 7 is just awful. I like some of the new features but boy is the interface dreadful, as others said there is no going back now.

I'm repeating the question: what it is this "Apple (the company)"? Program? network service? Call center phone number? Apple employ visiting every home where someone is doing upgrade/downgrade of the firmware?
This checking by "Apple (the company)" (whatever it is) is done how? telepathically?

Please stop this bollocks.

There is no bollocks, and this will be my last response to you. When you install any firmware onto your iPhone, it must be done through iTunes. This install is then checked with Apple's servers, and is either verified or not. If it's verified, it will install. If not, it won't. As of now, only iOS 7 (for an iPhone 5) will pass this verification check with Apple's servers, therefore it is the only firmware that can be installed on an iPhone 5.

This post is just information for anyone wondering if they can downgrade their iPhone 5.

The error in question, not my picture, but the content is the same:

The treasure chest and keys was a metaphor, it would appear metaphors are lost upon you. Just because Apple still serves the IPSW with the same checksum doesn't mean you'll be able to restore to it. Yes, they are the same checksum I checked. Because everyone (mostly everyone with the exception of you) knows that downgrading an iPhone 5 or any other A5+ device that is not being signed impossible, I set forth the decree that you are lying. Please stop. You're giving false hope to those who want to downgrade. I quote from TinyUmrealla, the best SHSH blob (have you read up on those yet? Go read: http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/SHSH) manager and TSS server.

09/23/2013 15:01:53.630 APPLE is NOT signing iPhone4S 6.1.3 (10B329) SHSH requests anymore. All you can do now is select CYDIA and hope that CYDIA has your SHSH saved. If not, there is nothing you can do. 09/23/2013 15:01:53.676 For version [iPhone4S 6.1.3 (10B329)] - This device isn't eligible for the requested build.

Note the "NOT" within the quote. This means that Apple's server isn't validating the restore and iTunes won't be able to put that firmware on the device.

Another bit incorrect information. Starting with the 3Gs, iTunes needs to be able to contact Apple's TSS/SHSH signing servers to validate the restore. If it cannot due to not being connected to the internet, it'll fail and prompt you to try again when connect to the internet.

Did I wrote something else???

Bollocks. You can upgrade/downgrade only firmware using computer not connected to the network. Try.
After finish this stage you will have iOS without any additional software and on initialise iOS you will need connectivity. If you will go to restore installed software from last backup iTunes will first as you about apple id an here your iPhone/iPad must be connected over mobile network to public network or iTunes on your computer must be connected but not for verify software but for verify apple id.

Bollocks my rear. Internet connectivity is required. iTunes won't even start the restore without it. You go and try it. You'll see that we're correct.

Do you see that in this dialog box is displayed iPhone name from iTunes?
It means that handset was not in DFU mode.

Now you're grasping at straws. That's not my phone, but the content is the exact same. My iPhone was in DFU mode, not that DFU mode would make any difference. iTunes will still give you the same error.

I just read the rest of the posts on this thread and you're making a fool out of yourself.

iTunes will not let you upgrade IPSW without an internet connection for it to be 'signed' (accepted for use) so if you turn off your internet, it still won't let you upgrade. I've tried every method because I clearly don't want iOS 7 and it won't work on iTunes with or without Internet.

Thanks to those who replied because now I know there's absolutely no way to remove iOS 7. :(
