Every single one has backlight bleed, yours included. You just haven't noticed it yet.

Glad to hear that you think you know what my iMac is like, but sorry, you don't. I don't have any real backlight bleed. If you want to come over and check it out in the dark, you're more than welcome to.

Alright then, please feel free to post a photo of your screen with similar brightness/exposure settings to others in this thread.

Do you know how I erase the r iMac I have I'm just going to send mine back, wanted to make sure it's all erased, going to try one more and then I'm just returning for refund And might just get a non retina.

I made a black image and full screened it and only noticed a very very slight amount of bleed at the bottom edge. Not enough to make me unhappy with my iMac. at all.

Today I received my second retina iMac. It a little bit better. Would you guys keep it?

Doesn't matter what we think. It's yours. If it annoys you, don't keep it. If it doesn't, keep it.

If you return, you'll need to wait a few months before ordering another to have any solid chance of improvement as LG improve production lines/manufacturing process. Otherwise it's just pot luck.

That simply hasn't been the case in any previous-generation iMacs. It is what it is.

That's ridiculous I would send it back but it's your choice, it's a lot of money for it It would anger me every time I turned it on, here's my replacement not any better

Side opinion....

We're not talking OLED screens here. They're still LCD. SO why is there this outcry?

My Sharp AQUOS Quattron has the same phenomenon, as does my LG G2 (obviously not as noticeable due to the size). It's the technology.

Oy... that top left is pretty ghastly.

I do find with the brightness turned down, even in a pitch dark room - the bleed is almost unnoticeable. It's just a bummer if you like it bright in dark room.

OLED is not perfect tech, though. I've seen a bunch of color uniformity on a lot of them (Galaxy S3, S4, S5, the new OLED Tabs, my Playstation Vita etc). There's no perfect display tech.

Heck, the blacks on the Vita are nothing to write home about, either (splotchy, nasty-looking), though to be fair OLED has come on a bit since then...

Got another replacement today. This one is a US build. I have attached a picture of both IMac's. Which one do you think is worse?

Im starting to think this too. i think the only way to get rid of the defect is to have full array LED backlight. ive tested 3 lcd's (my current LG 21.5" monitor, my 60" samsung lcd tv and my 52"sharp LCD tv) that are all side lit (backlight goes along the sides of the LCD but no LED's are direct behind it) They all look similar to the pictures being posted in this thread when i put them at full brightness. there is another kind of backlight technology that is only used on higher end LCD tv's called full array LED back light

Edge-lit without Local Dimming: When TV manufacturers decided to make LED TVs even thinner and lighter than they already were, they began using “edge-lit‚” configurations. In contrast to the full-array configuration, LEDs on edge-lit TVs sit along the edge of the LCD panel. When it comes to picture quality, you won‚’t see any major differences over standard LCD TVs. In fact, some lower quality models may not uniformly illuminate the LCD panel, thus leading to brighter edges.

the fact that apple decided to make the LCD even thinner is probably why this issue is so bad with this lcd screen. also i read somewhere that apple used brighter LED's because of the amount of pixels this panel has.

im not making excuses for apple. just saying ive seen this before

mine doesn't have a blacklight bleed and my 2004 iMac doesn't have one either :D

The one on the right looks nasty in the top left corner. Is that the replacement or original?

The one on the right is the replacement. Already boxed it and it is going back to Apple. Keeping the one on the left and Apple has offered me an open end return. I also got a substantial discount as well and this was in addition to the education discount they offer. My hope is that Apple changes screen manufacturers in the near future. LG is the current manufacturer and if they switched back to Samsung there wouldn't be these excessive backlighting issues.

I spoke with tier 2 management at the Apple online store to get discount. The open end return means there is no deadline for returning the unit however there are some stipulations for this.

Ah gotcha not bad. like store credit if you decide to return, ect.

Samsung might be a bit better in some ways, but they're a problem that affects the technology itself. LG is also the primary supplier of IPS panels. Many of the others left that business long ago due to falling margins.

Every sing one has backlight bleed. Whether it photographs well or not - EVERYONE has backlight bleed on the 2014 5K iMacs. I can easily take a photo of my 5K iMac where it looks amazing on black, and other photos where it looks absolutely awful.

You can actually extend that to virtually every lcd display. Some of those designed for professional use have sophisticated methods to reduce its appearance. They rely on using a slightly higher black level, so if the backlight bleed is minimal, the rest is brought up somewhat in brightness to match the brightness level of the portions affected by backlight bleed.

I agree this needs to be improved, but come on... When do you actually use max brightness on the iMac? I never do it. At most I use about 50-60%. At that level the usual blacklight bleed is minimal/hardly visible.

I don't see the point of posting all these over-exposed pictures. They clearly do not represent how the display looks in real life, and they over-enhance any small amount of light bleed that might be happening around the corners.

Personally I'm very happy with my 5k screen. I find it too bright to use above 50% even during the day. Watching dark videos at night there is no noticeable bleeding. Of course a full brightness dark screen in a dark room will expose some bleeding around the corners, but it doesn't affect my regular use.

Now I understand that some people might be more sensitive to brightness fluctuations - maybe they have to look into getting a professional display instead.

The pictures are over exposed but you can clearly see the areas of backlight. When you turn on a brand new IMac and the brightness is at 30% (very low) and you see backlight bleeding that is a problem. Everyone uses computers differently. For example if I were to watch a letterbox movie you would see the backlight bleeding with the brightness set to low. I am sorry but a $3000 computer should not do this. The prior generation IMacs didn't have this problem. When Apple released these retina displays they should have payed more attention to detail which obviously they didn't do. I can almost guarantee that Apple will address this issue with the refresh of this model in a few months.

I can almost guarantee they won't. This isn't a new phenomenon. And the previous iMacs had their own sets of bleed issues, not to mention far inferior viewing angles.

That is interesting because I had a late 2012 IMac and it had zero bleeding issues. As far as viewing angles go I could care less about that because I sit in front of my computer when I use it. It really comes down to the quality of Apple products declining over the past 2 years. If you are going to offer a retina display then make sure it is a quality screen. Instead they chose to use LG and their LED technology is horrible. This technology has been around for many years and you would think by now all of the kinks would have been worked out.

Every iMac has bleed. The difference is that with the 2014 5K iMacs, that bleed is more noticeable because it lacks the SEVERE IPS glow that ALL 2012/2013 27" iMacs suffer from. This effectively hid the actual LCD bleed (different from flow). You can blame Apple and say it's poor to have this bleed (I won't argue with you), but I've dealt with a lot of 2012/2013 iMacs since their release - and every single one, without fail, has had backlight bleed.
