This reminds me of a couple of NCO's and the way they did their coffee in the field.

On a pot bellied stove, they place a 2 QT coffee can. Then inside they poured the beans and water. Let them boil and stirring every once in a while.

Pour out what they wanted to drink.

Add a few more coffee beans.

Fill up with water.

Repeat process.

This would go on for about a week before they would start fresh with a new can. I think around every 2-3 days, they would dump out the contents and sort of wash the can.

Seemed to work for them. :)

In the field you do what you have to do.

I too have used the same grounds a few hours later to make some more (granted weaker) coffee. Obviously, anything longer than a day and I would toss.

Somewhere I read that you can mix the used grounds with dirt for a garden. I also remember a time when my dad, because I had told him about coffee grounds in gardens, just dumped the grounds right on the top layer of a plant pot and well after a day or so mold started to grow :p I forgot to tell him that is should at least be mixed.

I know someone who's been reusing grounds in a coffee maker for years. Adds a few fresh grounds with each pot. She's still alive.

But it's nasty and I can't drink it myself. My suggestion is to buy more coffee when you shop. Best is whole beans and grind them as needed. Mr. Coffee makes a great grinder for $20. Store the opened beans tightly sealed at room temperature.

I'm pretty picky about my coffee, but then again, I don't often swill an entire pot or more in one sitting. Personally, I can't see reusing the grounds. I always am very quick to throw out the grounds as soon as it's done as opposed to letting them damp grounds sit there and slowly drip into the full pot. I can drink coffee that's been in the pot for a couple hours, but if the grounds have been above the pot dripping, it tends to start tasting bitter.

If it's a cost thing, how about using a half measure of coffee for the first pot, and the other half for the second pot?

Both pots will be weak for sure, but they'll also both be fresh and have the same balanced taste.

I'm not sure if the general consensus of this thread is due to the general population of Mac users being the Starbucks turtleneck hipsters they are or just coffee elitists being theirselves. Maybe both?

Also,
Do you use tea bags twice?

People don't do this? They're usually good for 3 times before the taste really goes away.

I have repeated...ad nauseum, ad infinitum, my mantra...if you like it, it's OK.

Well, I found the exception....

No...just no.

Now, where did I leave my turtleneck. Must have been at that elitist establishment, Starbucks!

Black turtleneck 'hipsters'. We coffee drinkers can only wear black turtlenecks……...

Grandma - who was an award-winning cook/baker - reused coffee grounds in chocolate cake.

It was awesome... I didn't know she did this until after she passed. That cake had a little extra something that was just supremely nummers.

Hey thread, welcome back from the dead!

If you're the kind of person who buys beans through Tonx, owns a grinder, and knows the difference between dark and light roasts, you should flog yourself with a cat-o-nine-tails for even thinking such a thing.

If you like Folgers, gas station coffee, and don't know the meaning of the word "overextracted" knock yourself out.

Just tried this, adding some fresh coffee to recently brewed grounds.

Oh my goodness. :\ Ended up just pouring the whole thing out and making a half pot with what little I had.

10/10 will never do again

Edit: Just noticed the massive necropost. Sorry. Google led here.

Coffee grounds are wonderful for plants, as compost - they love them, and thrill to them.

Aside from being trapped in a siege during war, I cannot think of any reason to re-use them and expect to make a cup of coffee one could drink from them.
