is there any SSD difference in 2014 rmbp and rmbp 2015?

I'm sry to ask you what tools do I need to make the NVME work?

I need some screwdrivers, is a:
Pentalope 1,2 or 0,8?
T5 Torx in what size?

Do I need a case to transfer something onto it, or can I just install it from the network boot or from an usb?

You just need two screwdrivers,

Pentalobe 1.2 and Torx T5 (T5 is the size)

You can do installation from internet by booting while holding Command + Option + R (make sure you press Option as well - so that it give you latest OS available)

😱 not sure that is realistic ... would be easier to replace the HHD part, with an SSD right?

Think I have to stick with it a year or two more, but perhaps it's fine as it is.
Any little thing I can do though to get a little extra power or speed 😅

EDIT: I don't think I will cut it open myself ... so perhaps I'm already running it as well as it can run without being cut open as I am now from the Transend drive ?


Another option could be to just use the imac as a display with the display port.
Could even do that on the broken imac 2014 ...
But I still think it's quad core is way, way stronger than the dual one in the macbook 2015.. not to mention the dedicated graphic card.

Hahaha, yeah, of course you can just keep using it as is today, the thunderbolt speed is good enough for most of usage after all

I ordered the expensive adapter with the long board, hope its the best snd the 1 gb disk.

And yeah lol, its funny how a machine that feels fast enough can suddently seem slow when we start talking about numbers lol …

Also all is relative, my 2014 rMBP and the iMac felt sort os the same speed wise, could not feel a big diffrence … perhaps that will change now the 2015 will feel fasree

So the MacBook arrived ... I have to say it look like brand new, a single hairline hair on the bottom.
The processor is smaller than I hoped 2,7 i5 vs the MacBook 2014s 2,8 - 16 gb ram.

It feels like this one runs Monterey as fast as the old one ran Catalina.
I never tested the old machine with Monterey.

I think I will end up rolling it all back to Catalina though, I'm not that crazy for these new children like design.

The first thing I did after setting up the preinstalled Monterey was run the black magic test on the 250 gb drive:

It scored in the ranges of:
W: 930-1020
R: 848-880

Now the disk might not be done indexing yet ... and it might score higher numbers under Catalina?


Anyways I'm waiting on the new disk, that should be here Tuesday.

My 2015 scores about 1,475 on Monterey. So that should be a baseline.

This 250 gb scores a little low compared to what it should, the NVME KIOXIA vil score higher, though not 1475 in read I think.

Yeah I thought so too with the indexing, but it's scoring the same again today (or even a little lover around 880/910).
There is no guarantees this is an original drive either though, it is refurbed after all.

The NVME should arrive today, then I'm opening it up and we will know.

The guy actually cheated me a little, I thought it would be a 3.1 ghz i7, it's only a 2,7 ghz i5.
That's a machine preforming around 10% worse right? not sure how much it will matter.

At least it's in good condition otherwise, a little bump in a corner and a hairline in the bottom.
The screen is perfect with no pest... and the keyboard feels like new.
500 cycles in on the battery.

Ohh your linked actually gave the NVME lower reading around 1000 ... I will be soooo pleased if those numbers you write there will be true.

None the less this will be the machine I'll have to work on, the next year or two.

Monterey is nice if you want to use Universal Control and Airplay to Mac. I think that Monterey 12.5 is finally stable as is Big Sur.

Universal Control sounds nice, esp. since I could use it on the mac with a broken keyboard.
But I would need to patch the macbook 2014 and stuff anyways then.
There must exist software that does this just as well Monterey: already many years ago I was doing this with Synergy can see there is also a new app called Sharemouse.

I can already airplay to mac trough an app as well.

I also like Catalina UI so much more.

Is there any other advantages to Montery, it feels like I get better performance in Catalina on these old machines as well, and almost 50 minutes more battery time.

Alright I threw in NVME disk, went relative flawless ... I used the long connector with a board on it, they said that was the best one ... and installed Monterey to test and compare.

I get 11-1200 write 9-1150 read.

It should be indexed by now.

I'm not sure how fast the bus is in this machine, it's the 2015 13" not 15".

Think I'm going to install Catalina now to see if it's faster in Catalina.

Well what to expect, it's a very cheap drive at 1 tb.
Also you said it was a very low powered model (which should be great).

Catalina is now rolled back, feel allot faster in use, like ALLOT.

The write speed scores 12-1300 here, read speed about 9-1100, so the disk seems a tiny bit faster as well.

I'm satisfied with the performance on the machine, def something I can work on a year or two more until upgrading to the m2

Sure, I prefer if everything is in the os.
But when I hate the ui in BS and M; then I can live with compensating with some software to stay in Catalina,

Like I have been using Mailbutler with Apple mail for many years so the new mail functions are not that impressive to me… so I can’t pin a text msg, okay.

To me the difference feels like the -2015 MacBooks vs. 2016,2017,2018,2019 ,,, and then finally apple went back and did it the way John Ivy had told them to with the M1 …

Really hope the same will happen with the so, that it will go back to real Apple DNA …. as thought by Steve Jobs and Johnathan I’ve,
